You do realize that in bars & breweries, high ABV brews frequently get served in 8 oz pours, right? Is that "dumb" as well???

The problem for me is they tend to sit in my fridge because it's a lot of beer to commit to. I rarely get them unless I'm having friends over.

I typically do not care but my inner cheapness will typically be more discerning with bombers than singles. I'll likely not think twice about $3-5 for a new and interesting single but anything north of around $8 for a standard style (IPA, DIPA, Barleywine) and north of $13 for a limited or implied "higher value" style (most anything BA'd) won't happen for me in bomber form unless it's something with confirmed goodness.

With that said, I do love the hell out of barleywines and DIPA's, so to me, the bomber size is right there in the Goldilocks zone for both styles.

Second favorite format, after the 16 oz can.

I can be happy with 1 16 oz can, and/or handle 2 of them.

A bomber? I drink the whole thing no problem, but usually that's it for the night.

I like them and usually buy bombers. They are a good size for an evening drink.

Yes I hate 8oz servings. IMO Bars should be required to serve either 12oz or 16oz. Nothing else.

One of the biggest problems with big format bottles is that they turn beers into shelf turds. A prime example is Lagunitas Sucks in 32 ounce bottles. I was never able to locate a fresh bottle of this beer. I have seen it stated that large format bottles are fulfilling consumer demands but that is contrary to what I have been seeing.

The optimum format is 12 ounce bottles in a 6-pack carrier. I am confident that when Lagunitas Sucks is available in my area in the 12 oz./6-pack format, I will be able to find fresh product.

    Cheers!

Yeah, in my area a case of 12 Enjoy By bombers is about $85. I just picked up a case of 12 oz for $66. That is 24 more ounces for $19 less.

Why are bombers so much more expensive anyway? And why don't they make more bomber cans?

Because some people are willing to pay 'extra' money. For the breweries that is called 'extra' profit.

    Cheers!

I never really like to drink more than 4 beers on any given night. So slipping a bomber or two into the equation isn't hurting anyone right?

Great for sharing with mates, or if you are going to just have one beer it is pretty much like a growler.

I'm sure it has been said, but newer beers in bombers seems to be a way for some companies to decide what to bottle in 12 ounce bottles, like what Stone is doing now.

My friends who homebrew do enjoy the bombers we all buy, as it is easier for homebrewing to fill 22 ounce bottles than 12 ounce bottles.

I am in the "other" category, bordering on the "don't care". I'm not going to stop buying Allagash Curieux or Odyssey just because they come in a large format bottle. Can I drink one in one sitting all by me onesies - not usually unless it is a long sitting - but they are two of my wife's favorites and that equates to a pleasant evening. Do I wish I could get some of my favorites in smaller bottles - of course. Am I pleased with a generally higher cost per ounce - nope - and it is a tough call when I have not previously tried the beer. A beer that I don;t know I will like, I will usually pass if it is in a large bottle. But I don't buy ten bombers at a time...one or two will do. If it is a beer I like and only available in larger bottles, as long as it is within the budget and it's what I (or we) want to drink, bag it and tag it, we're in.

I am one of those who will "stick a cork in it" if I can't finish a bottle. I figure I've enjoyed the beer as intended for however much I consumed when opened it, and I know it won't be quite the same after stoppering, but I'm not gonna keep a stoppered bottle for a month either - next day or later the same day. Frankly, sometimes the 500 ml bottle is more than I want/need to drink depending on ABV, and I've stoppered quite a few half liter Framinghammers.

I only drink one 12 oz. beer in a sitting so even if a bomber was the same price per ounce, it's still more expensive for me.

I will do the stopper thing, but usually finish the beer the next day or same day. Yes - it is not quite the same as when first opened, but I am also not the "man up and finish it" type, so I am willing to accept that if it is a beer I enjoy and not something I can split with the missus or somebody else. I figure I've enjoyed whatever I drank on opening and I can live with the drop off if I don't let the leftovers hang until they grow hair. In this case - I do certainly wish I could get some beers I love in smaller bottles.

That is true, plus I think the "man up and finish it" approach is dumb, personally.

I don't mind Bombers for smaller beers. When the alcohol % starts to get above 10% a bomber is a daunting task unless you have a friend to share with. For saisons, porters, stouts, and generally all beer below about 7% I think it's the perfect serving of beer. 12 oz is never enough, but sometimes 24 oz is a little too much.... Plus all the bombers from 4 Hands use the same bottles that I home brew with so that's an added bonus. I know I can use any bottle but I'm a little obsessive compulsive and I like my bottles to be uniform....
