I guess I'll reserve judgment until I see what this means going forward, but Perrin has become a go-to stop for me on the way from Chicago to Traverse (Kingsley, actually) and back about 5-6 times ever summer. Hopefully nothing changes too much. If it means they're going to package and distribute Grapefruit IPA, then I won't have a problem with it.

Anyone who knows much about Perrin wouldn't be surprised by this, I know I am not.

I feel Perrin has been on the steady decline and this can only up the chances of their beer being in my fridge/belly.

Oak Cafe tapped one of the last kegs of Malted Milk Ball back in February. That was such a great beer. It was too bad they couldn't make it anymore. Nothing like getting a stumbler of it, although the cost was pretty crazy.

This... they were only in the game from the get go for a quick pay out. I thought they had been trying sell for quite some time. Dont cry for Perrin though, just visit perrinwear.com and you can find out how they were able to bank roll such a grand facility in the first place.

I have been thoroughly underwhelmed by their barrel-aged beers, especially the Killing/Kindness bottles. I love the grapefruit IPA, though, and would love to see that in cans. Been up there a few times and their beers are either really good or a complete misfire for me. It's like there's no in-between, and things were really off the last time I was there. Hopefully the new ownership will bring some consistency to their lineup.

Why can't they make it anymore? Loved that beer, and was hoping to see it in the future.

The recipe is not owned by Perrin...Its owned by a former head brewer..

Something to do with one of their head brewers, who owned the recipe, leaving Perrin for another brewery. Probably because he saw Perrin starting to tank in quality and didn't want to be a part of it.

They certainly had their share of head brewers.

just fyi, you can't "own" a recipe. it's more likely he took it with him and didn't tell them how to make it.

^ Wouldn't that be considered "owning" it?

It wouldn't be hard to remake the beer if they know all of the ingredients (since they had to be ordered). My bet is on the head brewer owning or having an understanding with the brewery that this beer is his own intellectual property. IMO, take it for whatever that's worth.

I think this beer was being brewed by Perrin after that brewer (recipe owner) left, and an agreement was reached that Perrin would no longer brew it, so there must be some sort of a legal basis for Perrin to back off.
