I thought Yeungling was an A-B brand like Budweiser...is it not?

Isn't the eagle an A-B trademark?

Yuengling is a private company like Boston Beer Co.

No. Owned by the Yeungling family.

Edit - recently got the title of largest American owned brewery, as they sold more than BBC.

It's a family owned brewery I believe..... a very old one. People like it based on nostalgia I think, but it's an Adjunct lager, so while people will 'justify' their reasons for thinking it's good.... compared to most anything else you can find in a nice gas-station, it's bad beer like everything made by the 'evil guys' that people love to hate.

In terms of cheap beer, its so much better than BMC. not just on principle. it simply tastes better.

Yuengling brewery is the oldest brewery in the US and has been family owned for 5 generations and the 6th are deeply involved in learning and running the breweries and business. None of the nine beers currently in their product line is an American adjunct lager in the categorizations of this site. They have a strong, loyal customer base in PA. In some areas if you walk into a bar and say "let me have a lager" you'll be handed a glass or bottle of their Traditional Lager, which is an American Amber/Red Lager. The eagle is their own version of the eagle that is the symbol of the US.

    I love me some yuengling.
It's the best cheap beer you can get IMAO.
And it's everywhere in FL, I can't find a bar without it on draft unless its a brewery.

It's far better than BMC. It's not a good beer, but for the price it's so much better than the other options, at least in PA. It's even significantly cheaper than BL Platinum around me.

Agreed, if Im going BMC style cheap, Im definately going for some yuengling. However, as far as lumping like beers together, Yuengling definately falls in line with BMC and not with the better craft beer options available. I must specify, however, that I mean no offense to any BMC or Yuengling drinker out there. I have drank both and enjoyed both myself before, but there is better options out there. (Sorry the last time I made a similar comment I got an "Inappropriate Warning" for a completely unoffensive comment. What was really ironic was that after responding and asking what I said that was offensive about the comment, I got a message back that was actually quite offensive in itself, they resorted to calling me names and such, and I still never got an explanation as to how I was being offensive myself. Very strange and unprofessional even for a beer site. Anyway...)

Why is it a bad beer? Because it's an adjunct lager? It's a perfectly valid style, just not what you or I would want to drink. But I detest cucumbers without saying they are "bad" , other people love them.

:grimacing: Ha, ha- never noticed that. Clearly, Yuengling's former flagship beer (before the introduction and the rise of Traditional Lager in the late 80's > mid-90-'s) now known as Yuengling Premium is NOT an all-malt beer and should not be listed on BA as an "American Pale Lager"*. All of Yuengling's beers, most of which pre-date craft era, use corn grits as an adjunct.

"Yuengling Beer is made from a delicate blend of ingredients- malted barley for flavor and color, corn grits for light body, hops for their snappy bitter flavor and aroma, and yeast for sparkle and flavor."

    ____
    * Looks like there's a lot of adjunct brewed beers listed as "all malt" under that category- I'd guess that would probably include most of the those brewed at breweries predating the craft era like Burger, La Crosse, Gibbons, Duquense, Name Tag, OV, Huber, etc.

Yeah, Yuengling are quite open about the use of corn grits. On the tours they even have a mason jar type container full of solid ingredients that are layered to help you eyeball the relative amounts. It's easy to spot the corn. :-)

But who are we to question the accuracy of beer styles and instances.... :-)

Yuengling tastes better than Budweiser to me, and I have no nostalgic reason to think so, it's simply what my tastebuds tell me.

Yuengling Bock is legitimately good. Sometimes I feel like people outside of PA don't understand the Yueng.

I'll always have a special place in my heart for Yuengling ever since I met Dick in Chapel Hill, NC and received a hand signed poster from him. It's hanging on the wall in my office at home.

You attacked someone else for their tastes. I saw the comment, didn't find it Report worthy but can see why somebody might have. Unfortunately it came off as being quite a snob.

Lord Chesterfield is my personal favorite of theirs. If you ever get a chance, the Pottsville brewery is an excellent brewery tour....so much history.

They were a big hit down in Destin, FL when we went down there... It is all OVER South Carolina so I didn't partake in its consumption, but all of the Mid-west guys from Indiana were shocked to see it. Distrobution black-hole I suppose...
