Going to join you all in the NBS playground once again. Reviewing a bomber I picked up at Four Fathers Brewing in Valparaiso on my visit there Friday. A release from last week called Ivy Mike, which was the name of the first hydrogen bomb test in 1952. It's a 'black' IPA weighing in at 10.5 abv.

Pours a very dark brown, with ample carbonation that leaves a light mocha head. Tiny bubbles flow to the top, no apparent light shining through this elixir.

Aroma is predominantly butter scotch, pine, toffee, and alcohol. There is a hint of dark bread in there too.

Taste is juicy pine, a bit of citrus bite, perhaps grapefruit, followed by a bit of candy-like sweetness. Something different in every sip.

Mouthfeel starts a bit slick and oily, then finishes rather dry.

My synopsis? A pretty good representation of this style that I'm not particularly a big purchaser of. It reminds me a bit of the FFF-Surly Blakkr collaboration. Perhaps not as hoppy? It's a pretty robust and filling beer. It paired very well with chips and some pico de gallo. All said I'd buy another. My rating came out to a 4.03.

Cheers for now, may be back with one more later.

Well, despite the name, it sure as hell tastes like my fathers root beer!
This one was a score from my man @totalbangover and he billed it as getting a lot of chatter in his Michigan parts.
    I can see why!
As soon as the seal is cracked on the bottle, it took me back to the days of pizza parties where all I'd drink was root beer.
The smell... Just think A&W root beer. Can't describe it any better than that.
Color: if anything a but darker than root beer. Not quite stout/porter color but not far.
Taste: well, it is what it is. If you buy this an expect anything BUT root beer, think again. From a beer stand point, it's damn sweet. But again, what did I expect...THIS. ZERO alcohol hint at all.
There is no lacing to speak of and the pour have off a head that faded as fast as flat root beer poured from a week old two-liter, but again, what do you expect.
Could I put away a bomber of this? I could I suppose but the novelty would wear off, so this 12oz bottle is perfect.
Glad I was able to try this. It's dangerously drinkable but at 5% and change, big whoop.

Good Day NBser's !!. So many fine springlike photos today. Hope I can keep up with all the excellent beer and pics.
And its strange too because I took a stroll saw some green, which was very welcome after yesterdays snow. After my little walk I decided today is the day I am officially raising my middle digit to winter. It can snow like hell going forward but its spring to me starting today. Looks like it is also for many others. Well on to the festivities.....
Today I am "diving" into a beer from one of my favorite breweries- Jacks Abby.
JA trIPL Triple India Style Lager.
A- dark golden in color with decent thin head that's hangs awhile with some nice lacing.
S- Bread dough and clean yeast like that of a lager. Some pine and hint of orange and alcohol, but not too bad. I'm truly grasping to find a distinctive smell. A little underwhelming.
T- this beer has a distinct bitterness that hits the tip of the tongue and wanders to the back of the throat. Pine sap? The bitterness lingers with orange and lime peel and hot alcohol. Bottle has no ABV so I'm not sure but its hitting hard. I'm just not getting this.
M- crackly dry, dry, dry. Medium to high carb. Coats tongue with bitters.
O- OK so I'm a big fan of JA's but a was a little let down by this one. They have been successful with some high ABV beers IE: Baby and Bride Maker. This may be pushing the limits as to want can truly be described as a lager. Hoponious Union is on my favorites list so they know their lagers. I mean how many others do strictly lager? The beer is well made its just missing any distinctive quality IMO. There is not a lot in the middle of this but tastes and feels like other is plenty of alcohol. Sorry Jack! But I'll never give up on you.
And since I'm toasting spring the Beach Boys sounded approprate. Brian Wilson was one of the pioneers of production and one of the most overlooked writers and arrangers. A true musical savant. Hate to get sappy on ya! But my musical tastes run the gammit. I like almost anything and appreciate the intracasies of how hard it was to make a good record.( its easier nowadays IMO) AND to make a good brew!
Cheers all, enjoy your week and as always thanks for listening.[IMG]

I loved Thailand. Even the megopolis of Bangkok has a lot of redeeming qualities. But I sure did miss craft beer when I was there. Thankfully, the wonderful people made me forget about that...most of the time.

Ri0!!! Wasn't that one helluva game!!! I feel bad seeing Trevon such a small part of this year's play. For the last few years he was the anchor of the team. Anyway, such a smart, composed, skillful team. I love watching them play.

I've NEVER rooted for Notre Lame before, but they almoooooost knocked KY off. Thankfully I was in a good mood after WISCONSIN's win, and a bottle of Mother of All Storms.

The butter may not be an off flavor. Being half drunk and having poor short term memory, I believe @Roguer was talking about this earlier. Especially in regard to Sip of Sunshine. While I didnt notice the butter taste, I would definitely describe the butter feel with that beer. I loved the creamy body on it. I stared down a 4 pack of the Lite the other night in the cooler, but based on the Molotove that I had, I was hesitant. It was like a guilty pleasure. Kind of harsh, but still drinkable.

Good afternoon, NBSers! I'm back with a few more new brews for the day.

    Founders Blushing Monk

Really nice beer; the raspberries are really noticeable, but I felt balanced and well-represented. It's a little thick and high ABV for a real Lambic, but overall, I liked it quite a bit. (I did a numbers-only review/rating, as I didn't want to be rude at the bar.) 4.04 / -4.5%

My "neighborhood" craft bar, the Malted Barley, held round one of a foosball tournament today. My partner and I went undefeated in the round robin phase (7-0!), so we're the top seed for the "playoffs" (in two weeks). That's kind of cool. I also got to try out a bunch of new beers, as the event was sponsored by Two Roads.

    New-to-me brews included:

Henry's Farm Double Bock: very, very meh; way too much alcohol present, and the sweetness was less of the malt variety, and much more of the cough syrup variety.

Rye 95 rye Tripel: surprisingly very good; thick, potent, and very interesting interplay of the yeast, malts, rye, and hops.

Worker's Stomp saison aged in chardonnay barrels: maybe the best of the bunch; really nice tart yeast profile, lemon, straw, and noticeable white grapes and oak from the time in the barrels.

All samples, so no formal review and no pictures.

Now, back home, cracking open another (other!) new brew: Back East Brewing (here in CT) Palate Mallet DIPA.

This beer has one of the best names period. It's a new-wave DIPA with tons of dankness and a blend of sweet tropical and citrus hop notes (I'm leaning heavily toward Mosaic, although it's a little reminiscent of Citra as well). There's a bit of that buttery note to the malts that I'm picking up more and more often with many DIPAs.

It's pretty bitter, but I don't feel it has any bite to that bitterness...and ultimately, I miss that. It's certainly not a bad brew (I have a feeling that most BAs would love this hop profile), but it's not my favorite, by any means.

    3.71 / -8.2%

I've been pretty harsh with ratings lately, but...oh well. Someone's got to bring these numbers back to earth.

    Cheers, NBSers!

Hi NBS -- I didn't even have a dog in the fight, but that Louisville v MSU game was intense! All of these amazing athletic achievements inspired me to...crack a beer and keep sitting on the couch. The beer was Odell's fernet aged porter. Odell's does not distribute here, so this is a nice treat and a New Brewery Sunday for me.

    It looks like this:

A: pours an opaque dark black with a lively brown head that recedes fairly slowly for a BA beer.
    S: licorice, mint notes dominate.
T: sweet licorice, barrel, ginger, some chocolate and roasted malt notes in there, too. The high abv is hidden well.
M: ridiculously creamy mouthfeel, with a prickly carbonation.

The fernet barrels give this beer an herbal, flower petal flavor that reminds me of a dark gruit. The fernet is dominant over the base porter, but it's definitely a fun and unique beer. A creamy, beer version of fernet branca. I will be sure to grab more Odell's the next time I am out West.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, everyone!

Only my second New Beer Sunday Post and my first Beer Review. Hello to all and wishing you well!
    SEVENTH SON RAGANA YAGA
    Wood Aged Baltic Porter
750ml bottle poured into Stout Glass
9.4% ABU IBU was not found

    Appearance - 3.5/5
The head is frothy and tan in color, approximately three fingers thick and sticks around for a while. Exceptional lacing left behind in the glass as the porter is indulged. The color is a deep dark brown black and looks the part.
    Smell - 4.25/5
The aroma has a roasted malt-berry overture which is pleasant to the nose.
    Taste - 4.5/5
This libation incorporates smooth roasted malts, cocoa, coffee with caramelized sugars and a low bitterness. A slight woodiness can be detected along with cherry flavors and subtle hoppy undertones which serve as a supporting cast that melds well with the other flavors.
    Mouthfeel - 4/5
The beer is medium-bodied, smooth and a bit thin feeling. The carbonation is noticeable and tingles the tongue just the correct amount. I prefer a heavier thicker mouth feel to porters which this did not possess. This aside this Baltic Porter was still very appealing.
    Overall - 4.5/5
I am very familiar with Porters in general and enjoy them a great deal. This is my first Baltic Porter and Seventh Son has produced a decent brew in my opinion. The complex flavors are subtle, the alcohol is hidden well and the feel is light resulting in a solid offering from beginning to end.

I will purchase this again as it is growing on me as I down the second pint.
Seventh Son's year round beers are not exceptional per say however they have strong seasonal/ special Bomber offerings. The artwork on their most recent Bombers is extremely vivid and thought provoking as I will try to show in the coming NBS's.

I get what you're saying, but it's hard to say based on one sample. In general, whether it be Rogue, Oskar Blues, Troegs, Caldera, and I'm sure a whole lot more, if I have ever found a butter bomb it's been an outlier as a result of oxidation, and the majority of the same beer won't have it. In those cases I'd say it was a flaw and not really meant to be there. I also find it kind of off-putting in this style of beer, myself- in fact, now I may be wary of Sip of Sunshine if that's true.

With Molotov Lite, I'd prefer to wait and see if it's an integral part of the beer or not (iow- is it always there?). If it is, then I may not be as charitable, in the end .

Having recently moved I to the area, I'm very impressed with what the guys at Four Fathers are doing. Love going there to try new stuff from them. Their 1 year anniversary is coming up and I hear their going to do some special bottle releases.
