Busy weekend trying to get a few things done outside in the yard. Starting to feel more like Spring these days...

Getting ready to fire up the grill and cook some sausages and steaks, but first it's time for a new beer.

Thanks to @egrace84 for sending this my way.

I had one other Urban Chestnut beer on tap in St. Louis last summer, but this is a fairly new brewery for me.

This one is Schnickelfritz which the label lists as a Bavarian Style Weissbier Ale, but is categorized on the site as a Hefeweizen.

Both flavor and aroma brings big banana and bubblegum notes with some clove and nutmeg hanging around in the back. This is not a normal style for me, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Seems like it would be a nice summertime brew.

Bought a four-pack of Destihl's Flanders Red on Friday, which the missus knocked off the top of the fridge this morning.

Put the most-dented can in the fridge and waited as long as I could before opening it -- and there was no gushing at all. If anything, the opposite. It poured a delicious-looking muddy red, but with a tiny white head that was quick to dissipate.

It's got an amazing big, funky aroma with sour cherries the most prevalent.

Unfortunately, the hugeness of the smell doesn't carry over to the taste. It's not as tart and tangy as Rodenbach or Duchesse; is too light-bodied, imo; and would have benefited from a touch of oak.

It's not bad, but doesn't hold up against the classics.

So I'm going to weigh in on another new beer today. It has been staring at me in my fridge for a few weeks now. And I finally decided to crack it open. Spur of the moment...

    Jackie O's Dark Apparition
    [IMG]

Pours a pitch black. Appears very viscous.

Smells is dark, smoky, sweet, chocolate.oak and vanilla are present as well. Great nose. Booze is present as well.

Taste is a blossom of rich, roasty, flavors. Chocolate and booze warm on the tongue. Sweet dark fruits come through on the finish and linger, leaving a sweetness on the tongue that begs for another sip.

Mouthfeel is oily and slick, but the body has a nice creamy, richness to it.

Overall I was looking forward tot his beer, but it blew away my expectation. This is the second thing I've had from Jackie O's, and the second home run.

    Cheers!

    @TongoRad

Fact. I'm not sure it's diacetyl; it's a flavor I get from a small handful of DIPAs. I assumed that it's due to the malt profile (and both Molotov Lite and Sip of Sunshine are brewed at Two Roads...), but on second thought, I suppose it's possible that it's due to a component of the hops.

Much like how many people don't taste cilantro, or soapy flavors, or...you get the point. Maybe that buttery flavor isn't so much an "off" note, but perhaps many others simply don't experience it the same.

As much butter as I ingest, this is certainly possible. What you are saying is true though. Not that Tongo doesn't know what he is talking about by any means. We are all more sensitive/perceptive to certain flavors though. That is one of the reasons I love this thread. Different strokes for different folks.

Too busy watching Caps win to see first NCAA game (plus I thought the games were scheduled later). GF and I split a Grapefruit Sculpin, and solidified our thoughts (I appreciated the nose more but was less enthralled by the feel). NBS doesn't just help me look at "new" beers, it seems.

Speaking of, we did follow one Ballast Point brew with another: Fathom IPL. This was a different IPL than I am used to (though my experience is limited). This beer was more of a balanced beer that seemed to highlight a sweeter taste more than a bitter one without being really "sweet" (in other words, more balanced). It's almost a stronger, fuller version of an American lager. As such, I had mixed reviews on the individual categories, but overall rather enjoyed this beer (color of beer a bit darker than reality in this pic).

Some of the heavily citra hopped IPAs I have had, were very mild butter flavored. Got it in 1 of the 3 all citra IPAs that I have brewed and zombie dust.

A fine review. Crazy enough, this is one beer I had in my hand along with Galaxy Hero the other night at Pace High Carry Out. I have had their "Ladies and Gentlemen" Barleywine for a couple of months and have not got around to it yet (looking at next Sunday). That is the main reason I didn't buy it. I continue to hear great things about Seventh Son though, and baltic porters are up my alley for sure.
I love to see people continuing to be impressed by this. Makes me feel better about being objective (IE, not a homer). I think this is up there with the best straight up RIS available. Yes, Ten Fidy and Speedway territory. Just not so much price wise maybe. This years BA version is really closing the gap between it and BCBS too. Seriously

I just got back from a short trip to DC this afternoon. While the Cherry Blossom festival was officially going on, due to the brutally cold swinter they aren't blooming yet. I figure this still fits the occasion!
If you like cherry pie, this is your beer. Definitely more dessert than lager-like. I don't mind that, but it's lacking typical beer qualities and is certainly more sweet fruit than blossom. Still fairly tasty for what it is, just won't be for everyone.
    Cheers!

Back for another NBS tick! I saw this all over the WBAYDN thread last year and couldn't time a trip to Michigan to find it. My luck changed this year and I found some sitting on the shelf during a recent trip. So here we go reviewing Short's Superfluid DIPA, with no abv. listed on the bottle.

Pours a rich but cloudy gold color. Nicely carbonated with ample white foam that quickly settles.

Aroma is pure citrus! There is a predominantly blood orange aroma with some grapefruit. Nothing else!

Taste is blood orange forward, a bit of grapefruit bitterness. Not getting much else as the citric acid flavor is very overpowering. Not sure of the abv., but it's well hidden by the citrus bite.

Mouthfeel is acidic, bitter, and very dry.

All said, this is one of the stranger DIPA's I've had. Very bitter and one dimensional. Alone it was a bit of a chore to drink. I reached for some habanero bbq almonds to squelch the citric acid from my mouth. I give Short's credit for experimenting with different things, but I often find them not suiting my taste. I'm glad I only bought a six pack, and will pass next year. My rating came out to a 3.64.

    Have a great week!

Happy sunday everyone! Another very hot day in Orange today so I decided to go with a couple lighter beers. Plus after killing 2 bottles of Parabola and a quart of sucks all by myself yesterday I think my liver could use something with less ABV!

Anyway, onto my review of Hofbrau Originial:
This pours a pale yellow/golden color and surprisingly has a good decent head retention and lacing. This is a bubbly beer for sure! The smell is fairly mild compared to most beers I drink, but I'm getting a skunky breaded malt type of smell on the nose. Maybe a hint of citrus in there also. The taste is great! Skunky, crisp, a hint of citrus, bread-like flavors, but all very subtle and tough to describe correctly. This has the feel of an easy drinking lighter beer that is much more subtle with regard to flavors. Less is more in this beer. All that said, I think this is a perfect beer for a hot day and I would absolutely love a keg of this. I could drink this beer all day!

Trying out what will likely be my last new brew of the day, and it's a biggun: Boulevard Bourbon Barrel Quad.

    Second pour

Lovely aroma; I don't know that the bourbon barrel characteristics have ever blended so well with the malt and yeast profiles. Bourbon, coconut, and vanilla, cleanly complement banana, fig, and prune.

Flavor is really nice: brown sugar, toffee, figs, prunes, and raisins show up immediately, but are quickly dominated mid-palate by the bourbon, bringing big notes of coconut, liquor, and vanilla, and smaller notes of oak. There's a slight tartness from the cherries fighting for elbow room with the bourbon (and mostly failing).

Picking a quad for the barrel aging was an excellent choice; I love the way these flavors complement each other.

I actually just cracked open a SS Ladies and Gentlemen last Sunday---I'm not a big Barleywine Guy but it was good and actually pushed me to try other SS offerings. I'm looking at Seventh Son Mr. Owl and Wee Beastie as my next exploits.

    Cheers to you Sir!!!!

I Forgot I had A New Stout in My Cellar Until I Went to Pack Up A Porch Bomb Sunday
Wow! What a game between Mich St and Louisville. Big 10 is carrying the torch from football season. Duke- Zaga game bringing it too.
One more, then I have to sober up to watch The Walking Dead with wifey.

Poured a pitch black into the Jackie O's snifter with a small, dark khaki head that disipated into a fine ring around the glass with nothing in the middle.

Smells like bourbon, oak, vanilla, carmalized sugars, slightly charred malts, cocoa, and leather.

Taste follows suit. Sweet up front. Brown sugar, molasses, VERY subtle bourbon. Then some deep roasted chocolate malts, and the nutty (Walnut) flavor from the base beer. Finish is bitter, but not overly so.

Body is very solid for a barrel aged beer. Average carbonation.

Overall, this is what I was looking for (but did't get) in the Rum Barrel version. It took an outstanding stout to world class. While I think that the base stout flavors are better in Dark App., this one is on par with Bourbon Barrel Black Maple for balance/integration of barrel qualities. A top 3 beer from a brewery that owns barrel aged beers in Ohio. Yes, they are way better than Hoppin' Frog.
