I've experimented with adding a bit of rum or whiskey to stouts with varrying results.

Don't try mixing it with wine you'll ruin both.

Yep! And a quick note about the old sayings. The order that you drink different types of alcohol doesn't matter, just the amount over a period of time. There is still a lot of wisdom in those sayings because it is easier to over-imbibe on hard liquor after you've gotten a good buzz from beer than it is the other way around. An ounce of a good whiskey goes down a lot quicker than a pint of a good beer.

I'm very fond of whiskey, wine and sake, but I rarely mix them with beer anymore. Whiskey tends to burn out my palate quickly, so it feels like a waste to drink a good beer after it.

I usually drink beer for most of the day but in the evening I like to have a martini.

    Bad-ass stout:

    1 can of Ten Fidy
1 fl oz if Elijah Craig
    1 fl oz of espresso

    = good

I've mixed crown royal and beer, cider and beer. Never again. It's just not appealing to me at all taste or scent wise.

I got very accustomed to having a mezcalito along with almost every beer last year when I was in Riviera Maya. The mezcal they were serving was very smoky- it was supremely addictive . (plus, it was a great way to make the Dos Equis Amber a bit more interesting).

Yep - if you wake up in a pool of your own vomit, that's irresponsible.

Seriously, do you really need a definition of the responsible use of alcohol?

I'm certainly not trying to be preachy. I've had my share of really bad nights. Those nights have become few and far between now that I'm older but I' m certainly not immune from tying one on and getting stupid.

All I said was that the old wives tales of liquor first or beer first or whatever are exactly that - myths. If done in moderation (and if I need to define that for you, then you might want to consider drinking less), there is nothing harmful about mixing liquor and beer in one session.

A dash Kahlua really livens up those mediocre coffee beers out there.

Examples include Zeke's Coffee Porter and Terrapin Moo-HooChiatto (relative post linked above).

Porter and stouts make me crave rye and bourbon. Happens with dark and malty strong ales too, to a lesser extent.

When I think about it, most times I drink anything besides beer, I probably already had or will have one. There's no combo that seriously bothers me or anything; I like all spirits and can enjoy most wines. Cheers!

I don't think it's irresponsible as long as it's my own vomit..I draw the line somewhere . It's just a blurry line .

Not since my days of slamming Bud Light in bars. Usually went Beer, Jack shot, Beer, Beer, Jack shot, Beer, someone wanders up with tequila, Beer, someone wanders up with Jeager, but I decline and get a Jack shot to join the shooting frenzy, Beer, Beer........... this pattern continued until I left or I continued the pattern too long and had someone highly recommend that I left the premises.

Now that I don't drink like an ass anymore, I will either have a chilled whisky or a nice tasty beer on a weeknight, but not mixing any more.

Stout followed by Jameson, the obvious choices. Also, no stranger to a cigar when the whiskey gets busted out.

Some Corsair galaxy or centennial whiskey goes perfectly with some IPA's

I made a "boilermaker" Last weekend with Murphy's and a shot of Frangelico. It was delicious!
