Not sure why anyone would take the top 250 seriously. It's just a list of beer to me. People weight their ratings of beer too strongly on how difficult it is to acquire. That should have absolutely 0 to do with the beer's rating.

Mostly out of curiosity, why do you think it’s the beer that's changed rather than your tastes?

This is why I think there should be a minimum number of reviews before a beer is put on the top 250. Blanc-de-blancs is on there and has 123 ratings. How can a beer be considered top 250 - presumably in the nation/world or craftbeer-world - and have so few ratings?

I completely agree that a beer needs more than 100 - 200 people rating it before we start saying it is one of the best beers in the world. I see the issue of balance - if you are only releasing 300 bottles, it will be difficult to get the rating - but let's be honest - the more ratings and more people who taste it, you tend to eliminate the issues of what we are discussing as a problem for the system.

To be fair, even being close to the top 250 makes a beer a great beer. Think about how many beers are available these days. The top 250 is a tiny fraction of the beers out there.

I just noticed the #2 position has a whopping 395 "ratings".

That's what happens when your beer doesn't make it out of Iowa.

NN is a great seasonal, sliding in right after another one, Celebration. It's still in my top 250, which is what really counts!

That's a good question as I have wondered this as well. For the most part, when I have a beer, it reminds me of the last time I had it, especially if I took the time to review it. In this sense, I suspect the two versions of NN are simply different.

But on the other hand, maybe what was edgy back when it came out no longer trips the hops lover's trigger. I simply don't believe this is the case though. As I understand the beer, its hop profile has simply become dryer.

If there were only 251 beers on earth, I might disagree with Nugget Nectar leaving the Top 250. As it is, I have no problem with it. Besides, I've only had a fraction of the beers on that "Top 250" list so I'm not qualified to complain about it anyway.

There are more than 395 Iowans who would like to try that beer.

I would recommend 14th Star's Valor Ale over the Nugget. It's not an imperial amber, but has more of a hop profile and resinous aftertaste. Hop Burps to the max. I expected more from the Nectar.

Replies on threads like these make me sad. Be happy you live in a country where Nugget Nectar can be seen as "a disapointment".

Over 50 beers in the top 250 with fewer than 500 reviews (two less than 100). Just my opinion, but I also think the minimum number of reviews to qualify for the top 250 should be raised.

Take comfort though, Nugget Nector is still 31 on the Beers of Fame list.

Thanks. The reason I was wondering is that I've found my tastes and knowledge of what to expect have changed enough that for me NN needs to be within a certain time window after bottling. I find at less than 2 weeks there's a bit of dry harshness I don't care for. In the period between 2 and 6 weeks is when its "just right" for me. Then after about 6 weeks it loses some of the qualities I most enjoy about it and becomes fairly ordinary (this is with just keeping the case in the basement, I've not tried keeping it refrigerated from start to finish). In someways its almost like 3 different beers. That’s one reason I'm a one case a year and done kind of guy....

which makes it more unfortunate, because then it's just a few Iowan counties that are rating the beers.

Maybe if they only made NN a 2000 bottle release and dipped it in wax it would still be in the top tiers

And only sold it at the brewery.

The number of people rating beer at festivals amazes me. How can you accurately rate a small amount of beer after drinking all day?

I agree with ^ guy above. Its not nearly as good as it used to be and its super malty and an average beer. the fruitiness has left the building.
