You can't charge 3x you can only charge what the market will bear.PTE is a great beer but few BA's on the east coast would be willing to pay $18.00 for a 12 oz bottle of it more than once. It would not be fresh in any case at least 30 days old.

Of course charging 3x what you need to be profitable is selfish. If you are choosing to price something 3x what you need to be profitable, you are doing it because you can. This is dependent on what you define as "needed." If you "need" to raise more money to do renovations or hire more people or whatever, then it is not selfish to raise your prices. If you are charging 3x as much just because you think you can get away with it and don't plan on doing anything progressive for your company with that extra money, that is selfish. Honestly I don't think there is really anything wrong with that (a guy wanting to make more money and finding a way to do it as long as customers are willing to pay the price), but your logic is so flawed and you are so closed-minded to what other people (EVERYONE else on this thread as far as I can see) are trying to convince you that you refuse to see the point: It's none of your business the reasons why someone decides not to expand.

I'm echoing what many have already said, but I'm in the "it's their business, they can do what they want" camp. I think selfishness is more of an individual person mentality, rather than a business entity mentality.

Nobody mentioned Alchemist. Finding their beer, even in southern VT, is harder than finding a microscopic Waldo in a 1000 pg book.

Also, $100M seems steep. Below is a description for the $100M home Trump is trying to sell...

The estate is set on 18 acres with the requisite San Francisco Bay views. In the compound is the 25,500 square foot mansion, which was completed in 2009. Built with limestone, it was designed to resemble an 18th century French chateau, complete with a ballroom, wine cellar, gym, spa, tennis courts and both indoor and outdoor pools.

    I'd brew beer there!

Only a small segment of your market will pay the 3x rate, the vast majority of the market is used to paying regular price and trippling of the price to them will kill the local good will and local sales of that product and everything else they sell. Most craft breweries want to be part of the community and raising the prices for the locals just to get more money is not what a member of the community would do. The ebay price is not the overall market price, it is the price those far away are willing to pay. I think 3 Floyds was asked why they don't raise the price if Dark Lord due to the demand and I saw the answer on these forums somewhere.

I am getting a headache and I haven't even had a beer yet today!!! Everyone has made great points and tried to explain this, but the OP does not get it, no point in continuing to argue or make him try to understand.

Actually, I've been pretty sure now for a while the joke is actually on us. I can't believe we're still entertaining this guy. This is one of the better troll attempts I've come across on the interwebs, congrats OP, five pages without being called on it is pretty solid.

I hope you're right. I really hope the OP is just making fun because as a small business owner this thread makes my fucking head hurt. Unfortunately, whether or not this is a joke, attitudes like this are all too common from people who have no clue just how mind blowingly difficult it is to run even a successful small business. Expansion is expensive AND terrifying. People like this need to grow up and be thankful for their local businesses. Maybe you'd rather everything look like a strip mall? UGH!!!!

There's this whole wave of self righteous craft beer drinkers that I've begun to notice. I don't know if it's just hipsters or idiots but the attitude does nothing but drive people away from craft..

Here's how the Alchemist is struggling to cope:

If they keep making amazing beer like Russian River then no, refusal of expansion doesn't bother me. Keep the product high quality with small production before expanding and possibly sacrificing quality.

And that's just it. It seems like many folks aren't satisfied until they can walk into their local package store and see endless rows of coolers that stock every beer ever made. It's impossible and, in my opinion, kind of boring. I like the fun of getting stuff that's new when I travel/trade.

I like to pick up new stuff when I travel. I also like the fact when I go the extra mile to get Pliny, Heady, Zombie Dust or any other beer that isn't distributed in NJ, I'm drinking and/or sharing something that most of my friends have never seen or tasted. Is that kinda snobby? Sure. But I will admit to a certain degree of snobbiness when it comes to beer (and pizza).

I made a grilled pizza Saturday with caramelized onions, fresh pears, pistachio's and gorganzola. Paired it with a Bell's two hearted that I was stoked to get in a trade. F***ing awesome!

Firestone Walker expanding facilities. They've taken over a big area surrounding their old facilities it appears and are putting up more and more equipment. Big new restaurant taproom too.
