Yep. Grabbed an Eclipse along with a few Supplications. This was like last July. Last time I was in there I'm pretty sure a few Eclipses were still hanging around. Pricey as hell, of course.

Nah, he's talking about the "no wax" Old Fitzgerald bottle from 2007; you're thinking "blue wax" from 2012. There's no way there's bottles of 2007 Eclipse on the shelves, but I see the 2012 version from time to time for $30-50 each.

It's practically impossible to prove a negative so, aside from a few extreme exceptions, I doubt anyone can say with absolute certainty that a particular rare beer is completely gone from the face of the earth.

That makes way more sense than me finding some whale-ish beer at a dinky bottle shop on the Oregon coast. Yes, it was a 2012 blue wax bottle.

Stopped by the brewery about a year ago. They had a bottle sitting just on the other side of the window looking into the brewery from the tasting room. So close, yet so far.

I am 100% certain that none of those are extinct.

    Definately not.

I can't speak to the Fantome, but I know none of the others on the list are either.

This all comes down to the definition of whale. Whales like the ones above aren't extinct. They age well and people recognize how amazing they are and people hold onto them.

If whales are defined as regional, limited production, sought after beers...then once again, no. People recognize beers like Kane, Allagash, and other limited small bottle releases to be good and they stash em. Today, these small releases are a dime a dozen (think de garde) that their whale status is fading. These beers just enjoy brief rides on the hype train then disappear.

The only ones that might be extinct are the ones from before the great Hoarde began. Beers like Barrel Aged Old Salty. However, those beers eventually lose their whale status either because they eventually began to taste like shit, or because they are extinct and #newmoney has no idea to seek them out.

The white whale list linked earlier is more like the first year of every beer that was hyped in 2010-2012 list with some crazy belgian sours thrown in. Rare..are you kidding me? Plenty of that around..DDG...Fou...BT 2009...please...we're talking whales folks...not big mouth bass.

Why is 50/50 Old Fitz on that list?

EDIT: Just saw they were referring to the 2007 batch.

Flash from the past. At college in NC we would call the brewery and Pete would answer and tell us when the next shipment was headed to NC.

That beer was first brewed in 2007 I believe... at the time that list was made, it was the first batch of BA 50/50 Eclipse and had not been rebrewed. What you drank was most likely the new batch.

In context, that list was made in 2010 or 2011... at the time, those beers were harder to come by and more hyped. Since more recent batches have been brewed repeatedly every year, a lot of those beers have lost their "wale" status.

I said closest. Though not completely extinct, there aren't many more 99 'boos still floating around. Or Mozart.

Shiner put out a Czech Pilsner that was pretty good one year. And they made a pretty good wheat beer also.

This "white whales" list isn't very good. I had three of those beers on tap at Brouwer's 10th anniversary on Saturday.
