I have quite a few empty Utopias bottles and they still smell very strongly of their previous contents. Any thoughts on filling them with other beer and letting them sit for awhile to see what happens? Bad idea or not?

I would be worried about oxidation. How do you plan on filling them and are you talking beer from the tap or bottled beer?

Pouring in will insure oxidation later.

This doesn't make a lot of sense. You are just transferring bottles? Why would a Utopias bottle be any better?

just wondering if the new beer would pick up any of the utopias flavor?

You need to bottle under an O2 free environment.

Maybe purge the bottle with c02 then siphon it in (like when homebrewing)

Well its a glass bottle, not wood, so any flavor it might pick up would happen quickly, I don't think you would get any better results from letting it sit. In that case, you wouldn't have to worry about oxidation. Pour a beer in there an try it.

    wat?

So, all these delicious beers I homebrew and bottle in open air I'm just getting lucky?

I think what you mean is....he would lose carbination?!?!

You probably bottle condition, the yeast consume some of the O2. How much active yeast is in The beer we are talking about here? I used to bottle condition, but my beer goes into kegs now. For competitions a beer gun is used to purge the CO2 from the bottle then fill.

Edit - Utopias is still from what I remember. It had sherry notes from barrel aging, so more O2 would not be good.

Since I do not have any special equipment this is what I was thinking. Pour it in, let it sit for a couple days then try it.

I was even thinking like an hour or so. After a couple days it will be flat.

I'd just advise you to investigate what could be growing in the bottom.. I've saved, and in some cases, recapped bottles while I wait to remove the labels, and I've seen some pretty nasty stuff grow in the bottom after like, 2 weeks.

Let it sit in the bottle for 4 hours deffinately picked up a little of the booze and molasses from the Utopias. Still had plenty of carbination too. All in all not bad. I think SA should barrell age some of their Double Bock.
