Sounds like a terrific time! Any particular standouts? Did you make it to Kneitinger in Regensburg by any chance?

Did and loved their symbol or goat drinking out of the mash tun. Had two of their bocks that night but not my favourite of the trip this was Vierzehnheiligen Nothelfer Fasten Bock. Had an amazing tour and history lesson at Klosterbrauerei Weißenohe where Urban gave us a ton of beer. Most of which came home with us and has not be drank yet (today). Loved driving through the hop fields on the autobahn at speeds I would lose my license back home at. Trying to talk my wife into visiting again soon and maybe taking in a bit of the Czech Republic this time as well.

Sounds pretty awesome. Please keep us informed as to what you think of the beers you brought home as you drink them. I'm a little bummed because one of the German beer websites has the Vierzehnheiligen but I never pulled the trigger and ordered it. Nor have I ever had the Kneitinger bock. Can't drink 'em all, I guess.

I used to drink a bit of the Vierzehnheiligen Nothelfer Trunk, but don't think I ever had the bock. Great place to have a beer (or three)

For our German contingent, bottles of the Nothelfer Trunk are available via Hier Gibt's Bier, which seems to specialize in Frankish beers.

For Strakbierfest Löwebräukeller was the best. Civilized you got your assigned seat not a bench. Service was good and the place was fun with a little older crowd.
Paulaner am Nockherberg was a total drunken moshpit of fun. Benches, over crowded, very young crowd and can't imagine trying to eat there.
Augustinerkeller we went one night before last call and they told us they were closed. Had lunch there the next day. Place looked cool but we never made it back to experience the night time fun. Would love to see the place in the summer.

Would have to have all three dopplebocks beside each other to say which one is best but leaning towards Augustiner's. The Augustiner in Salzburg also had a nice easter beer on when we visited.

OK, I don't know why this is getting to me but it is...you mean "Starkbierfest". The German word for "strong" is "stark" and thus "Starkbier" is strong beer. Submitted respectfully and all apologies for correcting spelling.

That is because I got lazy and didn't check my spelling......doh! Apologizes to all, anyway an amazing trip.

Were you with a group or on your own? I've been in contact with Weyermann's but private tours are for group of 8 or more. The public tour is only in German.

I am industry so a little spezial treatment was given. Would suggest going on the tour anyway even in German. The guide speaks excellent English and am sure you will be treated well. Their store is awesome. Loved Marhs and Spezial if you are going to Bamberg.

I was thinking that might be the case. I'm hoping that they'll have an English tour that week that we can tag along on.

This will be our third trip to Bamberg in the last five years; Spezial is our favorite place. I like Mahrs, but my wife is a lot more sensitive to diacetyl than I am so she didn't like Mahrs' beers. She liked Keesmann a lot. This trip will be more of a bierkeller tour than anything else.

I had gotten a tour with the head-brewer at the time (Oliver Honsel, now in Switz) with my daughter and a Japanese intern, in english, courtesy of Tod Mott at Portsmouth Brewery.... Nice tour, and lots of samples in their pilot brewery....

    Prosit!!

Keesmann was the best pilsner in Bamberg but didn't love the rest of their beers.

Lots of samples I only got three. Oh yeah we declined samples as it was before noon! Yes very friendly people, the tour is awesome.

As much of a (huge) Weyermann fanboy as I am, I found their beers very disappointing. The licorice porter was decent (lots of flavors to hide behind) and the wheatwine OK, but their lagers (Schlotfegerla, Rauchbier, Bohemian Pilsner) I actually drain-poured. Tour was indeed a wonderful experience. Need to find that pic of me and my brewing buddy holding the branded mash-paddle....

EDIT: I quite like the Keesmann Sternla. Wasn't as impressed by their Helles. But man oh man...that pilsner. Damn.

Wasn't impressed by the Wheat Wine either. We had the Rauch, the Wheat wine and their Stout for the three samples just after Frühstück and a little early in the morning for me. The only IPA I had the whole trip was theirs and later in the trip (but awesome for the style).

Just goes to show that most anyone can make a decent IPA. Maybe the other beers have improved somewhat -- this was 3 years ago. Still absolutely love the company.

I've never toured a Malzwerks and I use a fair amount of Weyermann malts. Hopefully I can work something out. Maybe I can Florian Kuplent to ask for me.
