I can't imagine living in a place with only one great place to buy beer.

    That blows.

So these people could only be "legitimate" in their appreciation of the beer if they were some of the first to recognize and enjoy it? Maybe they just didn't know about it before and are now willing to put in the effort to get some, same as you.

All of the complaints I've seen in this thread stem from people upset they can't get their precious suds because someone else, someone who hasn't always been completely attuned to the proper cosmic frequencies in the exact proper ways, got there first. Boo-fucking-hoo. This is snobbish and entitled attitude, straight up, whether you recognize that or not (and I know at least a couple people in this thread apparently won't, according to and despite some qualifying statements at the beginning of their posts).

. "This post wasn't meant to create such hate" he said, yet in the post he sounds like a sour, angry old man full of hate. You are contradicting yourself.

Because Hill Farmstead needs more buzz? Shawn Hill is going to suddenly go mega on his production and distribution? Nope and nope. And he's far from the only one. Same with The Alchemist, Toppling Goliath, ... . I attribute the out-of-whack pricing (too low) to the producers saying to themselves "geez, I know my product is good... but it's just beer!" (a certain amount of humility) along with a desire to make their beer something anybody who is willing to stand in a line long enough can get. Now time is money once you get to a certain point of income, and the shame of it is that the college guys with plenty of time and not much money now get to compete with mules sent by the guys with plenty of money and no time. Leaving those of us with some time and some money, but not tons of either, in a bit of pickle if we want low production volume stuff.

It would be very interesting to see auctions for limited releases - the breweries would actually be able to capture the price premium that they are now losing to guys on the secondary market, and it might cool down the current crazy some.

I was with you until here. Auctions would make things even worse.

I'll never forget that beautiful bartender at Ashley's (y'know, whatshername, the blonde) whom I asked what Final Absolution was like and she offered me a sample, no hesitation. Years and years later, tripels are my thing. So thank you, Ashley's bartender, for showing me what I was missing.

I can translate, I heard something similar a long time ago:
"I used to like (Band X) but then all the college kids got into it."

Basically, your favorite thing that wasn't well known is now popular among the 18-25 set, and they don't really appreciate it at all dammit!

I mean, I literally found MOAS sitting on shelves for $15 just up the road in VT. So yeah, doesn't really compare.

You sound like a petty, bitter old man. I think you probably shouldn't spend a lot of times thinking or worrying about it. I'm going to assume you were slightly intoxicated when you wrote this. By the way why do you describe these people as people with no jobs? What is the relevancy and are you standing outside asking each person about their current job status?

Fair enough. I agree. This thread was made pretty selfishly in a lot of regards. Still, that was not the original point. It is not about me getting the beer. Honest to God. It is about people who have never tried the beer travelling hours to get it and just sell it online. This beer people have loved for years is being used. Seriously, if you respect real beer, you have to respect that sentiment.

No, I am not, but I see groups of kids standing in line with "Harvard Track" T-shirts etc. Pretty much makes that point.

Dude what are you talking about. Everybody knows that people who work at a brewery only want to sell to people who are too cool for school like akrz47. They don't care about keeping their jobs, all they care about is that the people who are buying their beer are all knowing and have jobs.

Everyone knows that you can't respect beer unless you have drank beer. The rich Harvard kids just have a bunch of money and are trying to drink all the cool beer. I'm so tired of people with no jobs and no respect for beer actually trying to enjoy themselves. They don't even realize how selfish they are to people who know a lot about beer. They think just because they have money and no job that they can actually buy beer. Someday they will realize that you can't just walk into a place and buy stuff. Employees hate when rich kids tip them well and come drink beer that is only made for people who know about beer and respect beer. Not someone who just wants to drink for a buzz or to try something different. It pisses me off just to think about these selfish rich, Harvard, non beer advocate people thinking they have the right to walk into a brewery and drink what should be MY beer.

I was at Toronado in San Francisco a few days ago and I couldn't believe my ears when this cute 20 something girl asked the bartender if they had Pliny the Younger. I had to laugh because even though I've heard that this happens, I really didn't think I would ever actually be present to hear it. I thought the bartender was going to swear at her (I'm sure most of you know Toronado Bartenders have a reputation of getting pissed off if you ask a question that shows a lack of beer knowledge) but he politely said they didn't have it. I asked him how often he gets that question and he said at least twice a day and he usually tells them to F*** off! I guess cute girls catch a break.

Caring so much about what other's are doing and their motivations for those actions is a whack impulse, and a selfish one. All i can really think to say to the OP and those who agree with them is get over it? Stairway to Heaven is a great song, but its greatness is affirmed by the fact that it is so loved by soo many people.

Craft beer is the same way, people are going to notice things that are good, regardless of hype. Let people enjoy these good things too, man.
