    New Collaboration Beer Sunday

    Happy Easter, NBS'rs,

I hope everyone's enjoying the weekend as much as I am. Today was a nice day with family and friends, and this weekend I've been on serious home-improvement duty. So it's time to relax a bit with a new beer from two top-notch breweries:

Freedom of '78 from Short's Brewing, in collaboration with Half Acre(!). An IPA with pink guava puree.

I love Half Acre, and I'm always intrigued by the variety of beers Short's puts out, so taking a trip across the border to pick this up was a no-brainer.

Freedom of '78 pours a slightly hazy orange-ish gold with a thick, foamy head. The nose is all guava…just so much guava, with maybe a hint of pine underneath. Tastes just as good as it smells: a great fusion of sweet guava, a touch of bitter pine, and a wonderfully refreshing dryness. The beer is pretty actively carbed, so the beer comes across as crisp and refreshing.

A fantastic IPA with loads of sweet (but not too sweet) tropical goodness and a great mouthfeel. Fantastic stuff for sure

    Cheers!
    -Mike

    And some proper musical accompaniment…

First NBS for me, Sierra Nevada Beerl Camp. Poured nice into pint glass and formed nice one finger head very dense and thick foam. Has a nice citrus aroma and very smooth drinkable beer. Nice lacing left on the glass, overall very nice offering and think I will have a second! Happy Easter to all!

Well still in VA but I think I am done with locality now... but let's see what's up with here...

Probably last review as this and the last 2 brews have hit the palate strongly, so there is going to be quite a break if not a stop to new reviews for the day.

    what's next?!

40 Mile IPA - Three Notch'd Brewing Company

    -----------

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Canned Feb 11th 2015.

Woah… a little bit of yeast floaties there disturbing up the can.. Not too bad though, A very nice pale amber, to golden orange body with a decent appearance aside from some chunks. Head manages only though about an off white two fingers, but good lacing. Fast and fine rising carbonation coming up, and some creamy top if a bit small.

Very nice hop nose. Hints of sweet pine, florals, and tropics. A juiced sensation comes up with a real wonderful fruit sweetness of mango. orange and papaya. Subtle aroma, but noticeable leaving all the malts behind except for a simple sugar that almost comes out like refined cane. Very inviting aroma, hints at good things to come. Very pleased.

Palate provides much of the simplicity given from the hinting bouquet. Juiced tangerine and Christmas orange fruit all over, even slightly tropic, nicely coating and simple. Hits of pine a bit for a little bit of stinging needles but fruit hop action really gets a punch from an excellent supportive mouthfeel. Juicy and thick, almost bursting with hop fruit forward flavors. Muted and simple moderate carbonation just gives way to letting hops having a dominate roll but with a supportive sugary brown malt kick that is subtle, solid, and knows how to give just the right backbone and depth.

Nice solid brew, will have to give the breweries other beers another look.

Glad you have a sense of humor. I have no doubt my wife would swat at me for something like this. Lucky for me, I know she doesn't troll the NBS posts. In fact my idea of a three..... er... nevermind. But it involves her and beer. And no one else.

I think the regulars here will vouch for my devotion to both God and beer. I try to weave one into the other, without trying to be heavy handed about either.

Vacationing in Orange Beach, AL and found 3 x 6 packs of this. I should be good for the week!
This beer is really good and maybe a touch overrated. It's hard to compare to Heady, Pliny, and Toppling Goliath IPAs, but probably the best the southeast has to offer.

Afternoon NBSers! Late a usual. But had to work. Kids are on their way back to school and its kind of quiet here now. Had a great day yesterday though with food , beer and basketball. A special shout goes out to all those in the industry that have to work on Holidays. And speaking of holidays may I say a happy one to all those out there regardless of faith, race or whatever your beliefs are I hope you are enjoying some quality time. And speaking of time its time for new beer which happens to be something that has been in my bag of tricks and gathering cobwebs, because I just got bored with it:
Magic Hat Big Hundo IPA (DIPA)
A - nice dark orange/gold color with a beautiful head that leaves decent lading on the glass. There is an interesting single column of tiny bubbles that continually rises from the center of the glass.
S- pine, orange, citrusy slight tropical notes. Orange blossom and floral aromas. Very nice strong lingering aroma.
T- orange, tangerine, lemon-lime. Slightly sweet but not overpowering malt backbone. Nicely bitter. You can definitely taste the 100 IBUs but well balanced and easy to drink masking the 9% ABV quite well.
M- crisp, dry and nicely carbonated. Leaves a nice bitterness at the front of the tongue.
O- never really a huge fan of the Magic Hat beers. Have actually been to the Taphouse in Burlington many years ago when my bro worked at Forestreet. Just too many average beers. This beer is an exception. A well made double IPA that drinks easy and dare I say reminds me of one of Stones past offerings. ( I said REMINDs OK?)
Magic Hat now has something bigger than their tap handles. Kudos I say! Give it a shot.
In the photos my daughter made me the coasters. Boy she knows what I like..... And the cap well.....its not the case for me. Have a great rest of your Sunday and as always Thanks for listening ![IMG] [IMG]

12 oz bottle, dated 3/10/15, poured into a pint glass

A- Clear golden straw color with a three finger white head.

S- This smells great, tropical fruits, mangos, pineapples, slightly dank.

T- Not as pungent as the nose, but still good, piney, slightly dank finish, citrus, hints of tropical fruits.

    M- Smooth, crisp, light body.

O- A really nice session IPA, easy to drink, but still feel Union Jack is better.

I want to apologize to you all for my transgression here @cavedave sent me a private message, letting me know that he was merely warning me - said he wasn't going to report me. Very nice of him, considering what I did - twice even! I thought this was a thread to post images of beers you were having for the first time, on Sundays. I did not know an explanation/description was required. Again - sorry for my error. Hopefully I didn't upset anyone else with my blunder. Cheers!

Thanks so much for CaveDave getting us moving.
A long weekend of music, food and family, are capped off with a fine offering from
TO Ol (how do I get that / in the O?) Brewed in Belgium but labelled as a dry hopped sour ale.
Incredible in nose and palate, no hiding the intent tropical and delicious what a fine offering.

Poured from the bottle, no date obvious, into a modified tulip glass.
A - Fresh squeezed blood orange colored, stunning columns of carbonation construct a thick pillow of creamy froth.
S - Tangerine, orange blossom honey, Meyers lemon and white pepper. Stunning fragrances, run through the entire experience, stone fruits, dried pineapple close the deal. Simply astounding.
T - Hard to follow up that nose, that said, dragon fruit leads off, subtle, pineapple, mango, and hint of blood orange, follow. There is no mixing the approach here. Tropical fruits, supported by the yeast strains developed into an incredible offering.
F - Medium in weight, gentle on the palate. Lightly coating with no real daggers. the smooth round introduction, trails off. Leaves a tropical oils finish, think oranges and joy.
O - What a treat, never ending tropical delights here. The dry hopping pushed the flavors and nose forward. The entire time avoiding the trappings of dry hopping errors.
A delightful offering that challenges on a fundamental level.
Worth the effort, a treat for sure.
    Cheers

The US Senate has it's rules of decorum and civility. Harry Reid is wearing dark glasses and Mitch McConnell sounds like he's eaten a bag of marbles. What is this world coming to? I never voted for anyone like either, but I do appreciate independence.

Ladies and Gentlemen of New Beer EASTER Sunday: I enjoy reading your takes on your New Beer Selections and would like to share some of my own New Beers. What an incredible Easter Day-No Snow-No Rain-No Clouds and decent temp. Hope you have the same.

For starters I’m a HUGE fan of Founders Dirty Bastard and it is a staple beer for me and what this means is I always have some on hand. I never had a Scotch Ale Wee Heavy until I bought FDB and I’m now hooked. I have indulged in Thirsty Dogs Wulver, Oskar Blues Old Chub to include the Nitro version, and Dark Horse Scotty Karate. So now that Seventh Son has produced a Bomber version of Scotch Ale Wee Heavy I feel obligated-more like driven to check it out. So here goes!!!

    SEVENTH SON WEE BEASTIE

    Scotch Ale Wee Heavy
    750ml bottle
Beer poured into a Nonic Imperial Pint Glass
    Beer Temp
    9.0% ABV IBU is 30

Appearance -3.5 /5 The head is foamy and white in color, approximately three+ fingers thick and dissipates after several minutes. The lacing left behind in the glass is a simple froth netting. This Scotch Ale has a rich brown hue with a slight hint of ruby red translucence when held to light.
Smell -4.25 /5 There is a definite honey-fruit aroma infused with some wafts of malts and sweet caramelized sugars. The smell is noticeable and definitely says Scotch Ale.
Taste - 4/5 The taste is malty/earthy-dried fruit with caramelized sugars.
Mouth Feel -4 /5 The beer is full-bodied and heavy with a slight alcohol quality. The carbonation is moderate with a slight sting at the end. This Wee Heavy finishes a bit dry but not in an overpowering way.
Overall - 4/5 As I am learning with reviewing the 750ml bottles it is best for me to finish the entire offering before giving my overall rating of the Beer. This allows getting to know the beer and things seem to come into focus a little better. I also relax a little letting go of the feeling I have to adhere to a strict structured assessment. So…… Seventh Son’s Wee Beastie is a decent Scotch Ale however it falls a little short of my expectations regarding the characteristics of exceptional Scotch Ales IMHO. The complex flavors are muted, the alcohol is slight and the feel is full bodied resulting in a solid offering however I do think that I will pass on this in the future.

Bruery Sour in the Rye. I always stayed away from the expensive Bruery beers since I was unimpressed with several. Found this on sale so gave it a shot.

The oak really comes thru. Also, very subtle flavors. I have not had too many sours, but I am used to really funky sours when I have had them. This is more subtle and more flavors come across. Worth it for 15 bucks

Spring is in full gear around here, so I've been trying to get caught up around the yard this weekend. My body is now reminding me that I'm not 20 anymore...

Today's new beer is BA Legion from Community, and comes to me thanks to @egrace84.

This is a really nice BA stout. All of the flavors and aromas that you might expect - bourbon, chocolate, and vanilla. Very subtle fruitiness and sweetness. The mouthfeel was similar to BCBS but maybe a touch creamier. Very much recommended.
