As I was reading through some beer reviews, I kept noticing, things like - poured into my Hill Farmstead Teku, or tasted in my Avery Snifter. So here's the question:

Why post who stamped your glassware? Or, does it really make that much difference that your Teku is Hill Farmstead and mine is Highland's Cold Mountain?

Obviously, the type of glassware does matter, but will my Saison taste that much better in a Teku from X brewery?

All glassware is not identical, even if it is the same type ( tulip, snifter, etc ).

I suspect people mention the branding so we know specifically what glass was used.

Sure its a subtle point that many may not be interested in. But others might be.

Either way, there's no harm done by mentioning it.

Wait, wait, wait....hill farmstead has a teku?? ISO hill farmstead teku because that must make all beer taste better.

    It doesn't matter.

My friend and I actually laugh about it every time we read a review.

I think more than anything, it's just being a thorough writer and being as descriptive as possible, which there's nothing wrong with.

I think it's a mix---some people take pride in their glassware, and the form of the glass does have an effect (and maybe even an affect :stuck_out_tongue:). Obviously the brand name on the glass makes no experiential difference, but noting it does function as a shorthand for exactly how you sampled.

I do it for my own recollection later and also for a little color. We're not robots; description is part of writing.

All of the above reasons plus it shows loyalty to a brand or that you've perhaps visited that brewery. Hell, if it bothers you that someone mentions the name of the glassware they're using, don't read the post. Simple.

Wow...ask a question and that mean's I'm bothered by it...I never said that it did bother me, I only asked why people do it.

Sorry that I am seeking people's opinions...I bow down to your omnipotence...

We've come a long ways since the dark years of using a pithy Duvel snifter.

First off, I want you to know that I'm typing this on a Logitech keyboard... :stuck_out_tongue:
I read and agreed with @cookiequiz - I think, too, that when reviewing it's almost like letting the reader know that you're drinking it in the best possible way to get everything out of it, as the brewer intended, y'know?

Like, the Duvel tulip is iconic, and I gotta believe that the folks at Duvel believe it is the best possible vessel by which to experience their beer - how much of a diff it actually makes will net you lots of discussion, disagreement, and trolling :grinning: lol - but for a written review, it adds flair, description, and kinda lets the writer let the reader know that they're doing it right :sunglasses:

    Right after I posted...
    Hey! :grimacing: lol

Yer always gonna get some hostiles, or what may sound hostile but isn't intended that way - it's the interweb, home to more impotence than omnipotence

Glassware is part of the experience, particularly in terms of appearance and aroma.

It all enhances the experience. Also the experience is in handling, some are fun to drink out of others, not so much.

The functionality of the bubble on a nonic is great for holding, but it's also great for head retention. A beer isn't even going to look the same if you pour it into different kinds of glassware.

I was sort of done with them, until I got a Spiegelau when I went up to Rehoboth at the Dogfish pub. Then I drank the beer out of them and they are fantastic, with my favorite feature besides the shape is just how light and easy to hold they are.

You don't NEED specific glassware, but sometimes you want it, it enhances the drinking experience..

Otherwise just drink out of the bottle/can.

Good point... I may start adding the equipment I'm using for my reviews. My last review, for example, would have started with:

"Review draft typed on a Logitech wireless keyboard connected to my HPdc7900 running Windows 7, entered into Notepad. Final review edited with a Logitech bluetooth keyboard connected to my Dell Latitude running Windows 7 and entered into my beer database on Excel."

    Nah... too much "color"...

    .
    That's just awesome.

Of course I know that is in jest, but surely we'll see the birth pangs of "glassware shaming" somewhere in this thread......

I always try to avoid them, but I read the line before it's too late. They should come with a disclaimer: "Warning, I will be divulging the brand of glassware used for this review. If this is offensive please skip to paragraph 3."

For the record, I am 100% serious about this. :sunglasses:

    I'm using a Perixx keyboard.

In Belgium and to an extent in Amsterdam each brewery has its own glass and often each beer has its own glass and no respecting bartender would conceive of serving a beer in the wrong glass. It has an element of class to it and shows off the beer the way the brewer intended but what is most important is the glass shape. If you think it is important, you can order a Libbey Craft Brew sampler - 6 different glass styles - for $19.99 from amazon.com. I think Bed Bath and Beyond also carries the glasses. Having a clean glass is probably the most important thing and the rest of it is just personal taste.

I drank my BA Rasputin out of a hotel waxed paper coffee cup. Am I doing it right?

Kidding aside, I wish I had a snifter or something for it, or at least a pintglass. But when you're in a hotel and thats all you have....then drink up!
