My bottles were ok. I don't know what the Helles is wrong with yours.

Difference in two months, I guess.

Yeah, 93 days, speaks even less for the shape the beer is in now, you know? :astonished:

I thought the beers I had were in fine shape, but it wasn't really to my liking--a tad too hoppy for my tastes in something called a helles. Guess I'm too used to the ones coming from Munich and surrounding area.

I can buy Spaten/Paulaner/H-P for less money a six-pack and they're almost just as 'fresh.'

You are a fortunate beer consumer if you can regularly find German brewed beers that are 3 months old.

    Cheers!

Lately, I've been able to find Spaten (and Franziskaner) and Paulaner right around 3 months old. Earlier this year, I was finding 2-3 month old Pilsner Urquell!

The importers for Paulaner and H-P are just a few miles down the road from my office, but I still rarely see anything fresher than 3 months. I think that's about as good as it gets. Luckily, in most instances that's still okay.

Spotted Sierra Nevada Summerfest in the store today... ought to be a good weekend.

FWIW -- the retailer accepted the Southern Tier as a swap for a same-priced six-pack. The Metropolitan Dynamo went down a lot better than the ST Helles.

Picked up some Summerfest yesterday, along with Ninkasi's Lux (helles lager), Lagunitas PILS, and, on a non-German note, North Coast's table saison, Puck. Been on a steady diet of Vermont IPAs lately, thanks to some kindly traders. Looking forward to balancing things back out with some lagers.

On a similar note, I went with (my local) tradition and picked up a six-pack of Bell's Oberon, their Summer seasonal, at the beginning of the week. It's not considered a Belgian, but I've always equated it with Wit -- as said, gonna be a good weekend.

Oh yeah -- still have one Fastenbier left. :grinning:

Bell's Oberon is, IMO, a national treasure. Enjoy!

It's been a while since I had an Oberon -- I always kinda lumped it in with all the other bad American wheat beers that are ever-garnished with citrus slices. Will have to snag some fresh stuff when it pops up here to give it another go.

As for the Fastenbier, consider me jealous! Regardless, it certainly sounds like a good weekend upcoming:slight_smile:

I always thought it took that forgettable "tradition" and really raised the bar by making the "style" its own. Then again, I am one of those people who don't think that an orange slice in a Randall is innovation but one on the rim of a glass is an abomination.

I'm more in the "novelty at best, abomination at worst" camp, with a hearty lean toward the latter.

I was never really into wheat beer, though (nor witbiers, for that matter. Crikey, how many Hoegardens did I begrudgingly slug down at parties when that was the only non-ice/light/etc. beer available.) Been opening up to them somewhat lately, so maybe Oberon will strike a different chord this go round.

You probably drink 'em with lemon wedges on the rim too, huh:wink:

    Of course he doesn't.

    He uses orange slices.

Very different from the typical "Pale Wheat Ale." Really has a Wit character to it, IMHO.

Oh yeah, and no fruit for me.
