I left San Diego yesterday with 7 Pliny's in my suitcase and returned home with 6 in my bag.

    Watch your beer travelers!

Did they leave the little postcard that said TSA rummaged through your bag? I would bet it was the ramp workers at the airline. TSA would have a hard time sneaking out one bottle of beer I would think.

It's legal and within (most) airline policy to pack alcohol in your checked luggage. You could possibly file a complaint but I don't know how far you can get without proof of your claim.

They opened my suitcase and a box, too. Everything was thrown back in different from how I packed it.
When I got to bagage claim the box was soaked. I thought the worst, that several bottles were broken. Luckily, was just one RR Consecration that somehow shattered (had 2).

    It was Delta.
I had priority handling and fragile tags on them, too. Didn't help.

I remember a few years ago while flying to Boston with my wife, who just had ankle surgery, arrived at our hotel to find that " someone" I.E TSA thiefs, had basically emptied a prescription bottle of painkillers. Our rule of thumb when traveling is all medications, house/car keys etc. stay in our carry on's. I have heard way to many stories of valuables being high-jacked while you fly, a beer or some pills can easily be replaced, house keys, jewelry etc are a bigger loss to replace. Your lucky they didn't take all of them. When we leave for extended vacations I send my wine and beer via Fed-Ex to our destination and it has worked out much better. We have had friends who have had very expensive bottles of Burgundy and cult Cabs " missing" when they arrived at their destinations.

    Cheers,

^^^Couldn't agree more! Carry all your prescriptions with you, never placed them in your checked bag. In addition to theft, what if the bag is lost or temporarily delayed?

I travel quite a bit for work, 95% of the time on Delta and frequently bring home beer. This is the first time I've ever had an issue. I was just glad my parabola's and sucaba's were not broken, as I initially feared. Consecration is rare, but have another and easier for me to find and replace.

Just the fact " someone " was rummaging through your PERSONAL belongings without " reasonable suspicion " is wrong. While I am sure there are responsible ethical TSA personal there are many that are basically given a license to steal, just look at the huge theft ring broken up last year at LAX. The biggest items often stolen, jewelry, prescription drugs and technology devices.

    Cheers,

TSA inspects luggage all the time for safety precautions and I'm ok with that. Just don't like getting taken advantage of.
There was a huge bust at Newark (I believe) a few years back where tons and tons of stuff was stolen.

I always fly with carry on bags. Rule of thumb. I work for an airline at LAX. So I know how TSA and ramp guys handle bags. Been flying 20 years with just carry ons.

I usually fly with only carry on bags. Exceptions are when traveling internationally for a week + or, when I need to transport beer.
Because of my status, I get up to three bags for free, way cheaper than mailing!

Forgive my scrubness since I rarely travel via plane, but alcohol is allowed in carryons? (I assume if it is packed quite nicely)

Edit: This question was mostly aimed at dcgunman since I am fully aware that liquid on carryons is basically prohibited. I just don't want any of my bottles to be damaged when I come back from CO/Crooked Stave this year.

Figured as much as that is what I read, just didn't know if there was some super awesome secret way to avoid having to check beer luggage.

Ah well, roll the dice and pay the price.

I've traveled with beer in check-in luggage many times and have never had any problems. Worst I've experienced is some of my bottles will have had the bubble wrap taken off for inspection then wrapped back up a bit haphazardly.

Surprisingly, they never opened the bottles I had wrapped with bubblewrap and stuffed in socks and boxers. Weird right?
