    Accept of course
Heady ranks number one based on average score. I fail to see why people do not understand this. The average raiting for this beer is the highest. Which IPA you think is best doesnt matter. This beer has scored the best on average.

Measuring people's experiences of beer quantitatively is absolutely arbitrary as it could just as easily be measured qualitatively. You could argue a qualitative approach would be more time consuming or costly, which would be fair criticisms, but that doesn't mean analyzing numbers as opposed to themes from experiences is better, and it certainly doesn't mean it's the only way to do it. Thus, it's arbitrary in my opinion.

Second, saying "numerical ratings are a perfectly legitimate way of converting peoples subjective reactions into a numerical score" is quite true, as is your claim that it's been "around for a long time" and it is "widely used." I don't disagree with any of that. I do disagree that it's the best way to capture the opinions of peoples' enjoyment of beer, as qualitative research methods would be more appropriate. However, when the paradigm that people operate from is that because quantitative research is more convenient (time and money-wise) and thus better, and less about emotions and more about "hard numbers and thus "more scientific," then making the argument for for qualitative approach is going to fall on deaf ears.

Swish is great, don't get me wrong but Substance is a fantastic beer and easily attainable, probably my (personal) favorite IPA. Epiphany is also a fantastic beer, great things coming from Portland and you don't have to stand in line for hours.

Heady = good beer, but it's all subjective and all personal preference. What if it were more attainable? What happens then?

This weekend is their last release of Swish until October, I believe.

The ratings are kind of silly. I use them as a way of paying attention to beers I may not otherwise be aware of or have on my radar. But it doesn't mean that I *have* to get them. I also use my own ratings to go back and see how certain beers might be different over time. So in short, I use the reviews and ratings as an easy way of keeping track of what I enjoy and also what I might enjoy in the future. Whether it's #1 or #23 is irrelevant.

Why is it that whenever Heady Topper pops up in a thread, people have to start talking about how it's overrated....it's good but not great, it's great but not the best....bah. When you're number one on a subjective list, it's not about being "the best," it's about being consistently enjoyable to a variety of palates (over 10,000 reviews last time I checked)

Soon. It's the natural cycle of things. Doesn't mean it won't remain an all-time great beer.

This happens to literally every popular beer. Brewers should actually consider it an honor to get a beer to "mere-mention-of-it-results-in-multiple-'overrated'-posts" status.

They drop to Bier Cellar usually (I think on Mon/Tues) but it's first come first serve and usually won't make it through the day.

This is true...to an extent. I do think Heady Topper has reached a point where just based on reputation alone some people think it's better than it is. It's basic psychology. There is even a Youtube video out there that demonstrates this. They had 3 guys blind taste it for the first time. They all said it was a great beer and I think all 3 rated it it 9 out of 10. Then when it was revealed it was Heady Topper they all seemed to kick it up a notch on their praise and it just seemed that much better.

haven't had a beer better than HT. Close, but all had something I didn't like. I care what is the number one beer on BA, not much, but I care.

How did it get to be number 1 before it was hyped? This is all subjective, a legendary local brewer, who should know better made what he thought was a HT clone. He did not set out- apparently- to better it, only equal it. He thinks it tastes like HT- I don't- but it is damn good.

I have not had either #1 or #2 so I am unbiased.

All that I'll say is that just over 400 ratings does not impress me. I'm sure this beer is very, very good but it's so limited that it's impossible to realistically compare it with Heady (which is rare but it has been around long enough for many people to at least get a taste). Let's see the scores if it ever reaches 1000-2000 reviews.
