For me, there's nothing like enjoying a beer while watching a sporting event, either live or on TV. This got me thinking: which sport goes best with my beverage of choice? Right now I'm watching a lot of baseball, so naturally I'm inclined to say America's pastime. There's something relaxing about the pace of a ballgame that you don't get from American football or basketball, that goes really well with a beer or three. But I can see soccer (known in the rest of the world as football) being similar. Ask me another time of year, though, and I might give you a different answer.

What about you? Discuss. Hopefully this doesn't end up just being a poll of "what's your favorite sport," as that's not my intent, but maybe that's inevitable. Think about what specifically about a certain sport makes beer even more enjoyable. And discuss!

P.S. Coming up with this list wasn't easy by the way. There's a wide divergence between the most popular sports in the U.S./North America and the rest of the world. So considering the predominantly American audience on BA, I decided not to include badminton, but did include cricket because, apparently, it's the second-most popular sport in the world (after soccer). Field hockey is also enormously popular (who knew?) so I lumped it in with ice hockey. I also combined table tennis, which has about a billion Chinese fans, with lawn tennis. I personally don't believe NASCAR/auto racing is all that much of a sport, but a lot of people apparently disagree with me so who am I not to include it? Sorry, volleyball, boxing, pro wrestling, bowling, swimming, horse racing, track and field, curling, downhill skiing, cycling ... had to draw the line somewhere.

In terms of watching sports: Football is the perfect pairing for me. Gives you enough time for a lengthy session - you can let beers warm up and fully enjoy them while still having time for multiples or multiple styles. Also, it has enough time outs to allow you to go get the next one and not miss out on anything.

There's something about drinking some beers while watching a White Sox game in my old man's garage on a Saturday night. Watching old fights with some brews is second for me.

Yeah well I figured other threads about combining beer with popular activities/pastimes have survived the mods' razor-sharp blades. But we'll see...

I've got no particular antagonism toward American sports, but English Premier League football broadcasts in these United States often have me enjoying a tasty brew well before noon. And hey look, there's Leighton Baines in my avatar. COYB!

I think a little leeway in discussion topics (provided things stayed tied to beer in some way) would be a welcome change around here, but usually those things seem to get squashed out pretty quick.

I voted for football, mainly because they're long and have a lot of down time that yields socialization, plus I don't usually care about the outcome enough that I'd be upset if I had one too many and couldn't focus on the action.

Bottleshares during MMA is always fun since there's plenty of breaks to grab another beer and get rowdy for the main event.

Too many good answers. What time of year? Is it warm or cold? Picking a beer shouldn't be so stressful!

I'm guessing the votes will be close between baseball and football. Therefore I vote for "Other"..., Full Contact Chess.
