    :-)

Only supposed to be used in Germany and the German Forum here.

I mean the yes vote has a clear majority. But the no vote has decent representation as well. And a healthy amount of people couldn't give a fuck - so it's nice to see there are some sensible people on here. The not sure vote confuses me.

Look folks, expecting to find a single term that divides the world into two mutually exclusive categories is pretty much a futile exercise. The best we can expect is a small, easily explained set of exceptions.

In recent years, the term "Craft Beer" has come to imply: "beer which is of superior quality."

Irrespective of the fact that such an implication might be misleading, as long as people believe that they are drinking a product which is objectively better than some other product, it equates to job growth in a segment of a large industry, and is therefore good for the economy.

    Charles Papazian for President!

P.S. Aside from the first sentence, I do not actually believe what I just typed. It was made in jest.

Pretty soon we will have to use different jargon depending on which BA forum we are in: Beer Talk vs. Germany vs. US – Northwest vs…..

    Political correctness run amok!?!

    Cheers!

It would be interesting to see how this poll would result from the larger beer consumer set. It is not prudent to think that BA is representative of the larger beer drinking community.

    Cheers!

As I sort of said earlier, I think it's fine to use craft in a very broad, general way, but let's not get caught up in unnecessary details. Getting rid of the word isn't going to happen any time soon, and getting everyone to agree on a specific definition of craft is futile. However, no matter how an individual defines craft beer for themselves we all end up mostly at the same place anyway. Or another way to put it, we all generally understand what someone means by craft beer without needing to know the specifics of how they personally define it. That's good enough.

There's yet another arbitrary definition of craft. Thanks for trying though.

Ah well, in the German forum you use the original German word which I borrowed a translation of to say "TV beer."

    Problem solved....

FFS. Yes I'm sure it would - thanks for pointing that out Jack. I imagine most people outside of BA would vote "don't care"

    Cheers!

Luckily I understand New England (Massachusetts) English.

I would recommend that you move this post to the US – New England forum.

We could always discuss the correct terminology for the increasingly popular 32oz growler format. Just around my town Howler, Barker, Round, and Mini-growler are all used.

I have a totally different guess on how the poll results would turn out.

Until the poll is taken your "imagining" is just as valid as my guess.

I think there has been some mention in this thread of the Brewers Association.

Below is an extract of the Purpose statement from the Brewers Association website:

    “Purpose

The Brewers Association is an organization of brewers, for brewers and by brewers. More than 2,300 U.S. brewery members and 43,000 members of the American Homebrewers Association are joined by members of the allied trade, beer wholesalers, retailers, individuals, other associate members and the Brewers Association staff to make up the Brewers Association.

    Brewers Association Purpose

To promote and protect American craft brewers, their beers and the community of brewing enthusiasts.”

Whoops, there is that word of “craft” again.

Given that that the Brewers Association represents more than 2,300 breweries and they view those members are being “craft” brewers there is a lot of industry ‘momentum’ behind the term of “craft”.

Those 2,300+ breweries are likely to utilize the word “craft” when discussing their beers. The consumers of beers from those 2300+ breweries will hear that word “craft” and in all probability it will become part of their vocabulary.

As @Ranbot astutely stated: “Getting rid of the word isn't going to happen any time soon…”

    Cheers!

We better figure this out soon. My wife is dragging me to Applebee's in an hour and I need to know what to tell the waiter so I don't get stuck with a Coors. If we can't figure it out by then, I'll say "kein Fernsehbier" and will let everyone know how it turns out.

Only do so if you want to get funny looks. If you're west of the Cascades, you could also mention the fact that it's raining.
