Good morning everyone, and welcome to the latest iteration of New Beer Sunday! Our good friend the illustrious @cavedave has asked me to fill in for him this week, and with glass raised I humbly step into his shoes to kick off the longest running thread on BeerAdvocate - and, it just so happens, my favorite thread. :grinning:

It's been a gorgeous start to Spring here in SE CT, with temperature occasionally straying into the 70s (:grimacing:) and the sun bestowing its warm kisses on the budding leaves and flowers. I've got several new beers lined up for today, although I won't be getting to most of them until around dinner time.

...but this isn't about me: this is about YOU!

THIS is the day and THIS is the place to grab a brew that's new to you, and tell us about it. What do you think? What do you feel? Full reviews, links, and pics are welcome, but certainly not necessary; the cover charge to this virtual bar is just a few simple words about the brew in your glass. While you're at it, feel free to give us a taste of the weather over yonder, recap your week, or link a tune; we're here to chat about beer and be sociable.

So whether you're Helles-bent for leather and ready to Rauch, or you'd prefer to slip on some smooth jazz and relax with a Radler or sip on a Saison, hop on in and join us for the five hundred and thirtieth edition of New Beer Sunday!

    Rise and shine, ************s!

(...too much :flushed:?) :stuck_out_tongue: lol - I'm eating sfogliatelle and drinking a BBA stout, so I have very poor boundaries :grimacing: :stuck_out_tongue:
Beautiful weather today - sunny and fair - looking forward to some ice hockey and beer today; other than what I'm drinking now, I've also got a new old ale  on tap for later (maybe sooner than later - we'll see :stuck_out_tongue:)

    But fer now...
    Silva Stout from Green Flash
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
Now marketed as "Cellar 3 Silva Stout," it is, nonetheless the same product... @patkorn

A Top 250 beer, thank you very much (though I've made very little progress on that list )
Elegant and spot-on; aged in Heaven Hill barrels...
Rich chocolaty bittersweet flavors drenched in bourbon, vanilla, coffee, and molasses...

After my first pour and review, reached for the sfogliatelle - a natural pairing...

    Cheers, all :sunglasses:

I love New Beer Sunday because each and every week, the post has a different feel, a different mood, and you can explain all of that if you wish. Today is the last day of my vacation (until my next one in July :grinning:) and it has been a week full of cleaning up fallen branches and making preparations for putting up a new fence that got blown down by a mighty Kansas windstorm. Today I chose Parallel 49 N2 Milk Stout (nitrogenated). 5% ABV. Let's see how it turned out:

I turned the bottle at a 180 degree pour as instructed on the label. I chose a dimpled mug after trying the first beer in a typical Irish tulip glass. I didn't find much of a difference in taste or smell between the two glasses.

The beer cascades like a nitro stout would, but as I pour I notice the beer looks very thin and watery. The beer is blackish -- with a ruby hue coming through, not unlike a Guinness. The frothy cream colored head does not dissipate throughout, and lacing is non-existent.

The aroma is the best part of this beer. It smells really sweet with lactose sugar, sweet cream, and a touch of chocolate.

As I drink this, I immediately note that the aroma does not always translate to taste, and I'm sure the nitrogen is to blame. The beer tastes very milky and metallic. The body has a really sweet lactose sugar component that takes away from any stout flavors such as roasted grains or coffee. The finish is a little sour if anything, and that nitrogenated, metallic component comes back.

The mouthfeel is watery and paper thin.

Overall: Not a fan. Simply put: If I want a beer like this, I'll buy a 4-pack of Murphy's and save money, and have a creamier beer if nothing else. I like this brewery, and I will explore other beers from them, but this beer is not exactly Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro :sunglasses: I rated it a 3 overall, which is good for a -16.9 rDev. I rarely have negative rDevs like this, but I had higher expectations going in, and that really affected my score. Here's some good English music to go along with a rainy, cloudy Sunday. Cheers BA.

Thanks for getting us started @Roguer !

I'm starting to wonder of everybody on here is like me- I start out the weekend with a few new beers in hand, purchased with an eye towards this thread, but then by the time Sunday rolls around you're lucky if only one of them hasn't been broken into.

I did that again this weekend, but I'd like to give a little shout-out to Weyerbacher for their new Tarte Nouveau anyway. It's a great little sour beer (3.9%) with just enough lactic tartness and complexity (from yeasty bread dough to green apple to gentle herbs/spices) to make for an enjoyable session of drinking. I had three last night without batting an eye, and the third was as tasty as the first- I can see this one being very popular with me this summer. It's not quite a Berliner Weiss, not a Gose, but does deliver what you want in those kinds of beers. It won't hang with the greats so I just have to give it a B+, but for its designed purpose it's a home run.

I'll be back later with a real NBS contribution, one that is kind of a big deal. Enjoy the day everybody!

ETA: may as well drop some tunes, too-

From one of my favorite albums of all time, and perfect for Sunday mornings- it's playing in the background right now...

Aaaaand I'm back, with my first new brew of the day: Mikkeller Rauch Geek Breakfast, a smoked coffee oatmeal stout clocking in at 7.5% ABV.

Well, it's a beautiful day deserving of a beautiful beer...and this one is. I wish the rest could hold up to the promise of that lovely dark head, though. Aroma is a little muted, although it does smell like breakfast in a glass: a touch of coffee and bacon, roiling along with dark fruit and toast.

Flavor is much the same, and comes through in thirds (reminiscent of a good cigar). Up front, the roasted barley and smoke kind of cancel each out like destructive interference, leaving a muted, dull impression. Coffee comes through next, bringing pleasant and bitter notes. Smoke really ramps up on the back third, and while it's nothing like a Schlenkerla, it's pleasant enough.

Smoke and roast dance away on the finish, leaving behind the memories of an interesting performance...but I'm not sold on the quality of that performance. It's good, but it's not something I expect to reach for again, especially at $7 for a bottle!

    New Sunday Morning Stout Sunday

    Good morning, NBS'rs.

Looks like it's an early start for me today. But really I'm just playing catch-up with everyone who posted here last week about their experiences with this beer:

    Sunday Morning Stout from Weyerbacher

What a fantastic coffee- and bourbon-forward beer. Pours a lot like a regular cup of joe, with a nice sandy or khaki head. The nose is full of rich dark coffee grounds, bourbon-laced vanilla and oak, a bit of chocolate fudge, and some straight alcohol.

But the flavor is where this one shines; if you've ever had BCBCS, you know what Sunday Morning Stout offers. Lots of thick, rich, dark roasted coffee grounds that've been soaked in bourbon. Add some dark chocolate, sweet oak and vanilla, and rich espresso, and bam, what a beer! Mouthfeel is rich, smooth, and thick.

Delicious stuff in one of my favorite styles (BA coffee stouts). I love that I was able to pick up a 4-pack of this (for $15!) after work from a store where people had been milling around since 8am for single-bottle allotments of KBS. No hype for Sunday Morning Stout this year; next year, I'm not so sure...

    Cheers!
    -Mike

    Greetings everyone,
I feel big rain in my bones, and the pollen is hopefully in peril. This is a big powerful Spring following a hard Winter. My sneezes are bigger! The wild azaleas, blueberries, and a myriad of wildflowers are on full display and are simply gorgeous. The hounds were very easy today, snorting around, trying to walk backwards, and just very happy to be out and with us.
Today's beer is Wicked Weed Medora/American Sour with Blackberries and Raspberries-bottled 4/2/15.
This is a beautiful beer to watch, as it beads through a lovely rose/garnet hue throwing fresh fruit aroma near and far. I almost just wanted to look at it, but relented and took a sip. This is the type of quality beer that can make fans of sour ales. The fruit is powerful, coloring and the beer is absurdly delicious. This beer is so far from sweet, but it exudes fruit and aromatics that are transfixing. I would consider Medora to be in my top 5 best beers ever! My wife does not usually appreciate sours, but "knew" this one to be special. Try this one if you can.

This set from The Hollies, featuring Graham Nash is very nice. And Rhiannon Giddens, a Greensboro girl, is remarkable!

Otter Creek Backseat Berner – a new IPA that is a HOME RUN!

While shopping a week ago I spotted a new beer from Otter Creek that I never saw before: Backseat Berner. My first thought that this must be a new seasonal beer from Otter Creek. I have enjoyed the other new seasonal beers from Otter Creek so I bought a 6-pack of Backseat Berner.

I visited the Otter Creek website and to my surprise I read this is a new beer that will be available year round:

“The first year-round IPA in Otter Creek history, Backseat Berner is an American beauty that's loaded with juicy hops.

Like Oslo, Brewmaster Mike's 150 pound Bernese mountain dog that adorns the label, Backseat Berner is your everyday companion for life's adventures.

This brew clocks in at 7% ABV with 68 IBUs, so load up your buds and partake in this juicy exploration of American hops.”

There is also a good video on the website which details that a combination of Cascade, Simcoe and Citra hops were used to brew this beer.

As Homer Simpson would say: Mmmmmmm, juicy hops!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Poured into my Spiegelau IPA glass:

    Appearance:

Orange color with a slight haze and a nice fluffy white head.

    Aroma:

A BIG aroma of citrus and tropical fruit! I am picking up grapefruit, some mango, and a bit of pineapple. There is also a substantial amount of pine too!

    Taste:

The flavor pretty much follows the nose with citrus, tropical fruit flavors and a fair amount of pine. As Homer would say: Woo-Hoo!

    Mouthfeel

    Medium bodied and moderate carbonation.

    Overall

Well, the ‘answer’ to overall was already presented above: HOME RUN!! I proclaim this beer to be OUTSTANDING!!

Another fantastic beer from Otter Creek. Pretty soon when folks discuss the wonderful hoppy beers of Vermont (e.g., Hill Farmstead, The Alchemist, Lawsons) the name of Otter Creek will be added to the list.

Cheers to Otter Creek for creating this AWESOME beer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Icehouse Edge has a thick, white head and a clear, somewhat bubbly, golden appearance. There isn’t much lacing here. The aroma is of sweet, musty, wet grain, and the taste is of alcohol, corn, dank and heavy grain, a bit of hops, sugar, and other undefinable substances. Mouthfeel is medium, and Icehouse Edge finishes mostly dry, heavy, and harsh. This is a serious beer for hopeless alcoholics. Try some, if you dare.

    Happy Sunday BA!

I am lucky to tick off today another one from my wish list: Prairie Bible Belt. When I saw it on tap, I jumped and got myself a crowler.

It poured a solid black with a good looking tan foam, that leaves behind light lacing.

Smells of roasted malt and coffee, and the smell improves as it slowly warms between sips.

Tastes like a very chocolate-y Bomb! - coffee, dark chocolate, caramel. I had trouble picking up the vanilla, but the heat from the chilies comes through discretely in the end.

Medium mouthfeel, it belies the 13% ABV.

If my reading serves me right, this beer was a collaboration between Evil Twin who supplied the base stout and Prairie, who followed the treatment and adjuncts of Bomb! It is overall a great beer, worthy of it's BA rating. I personally still give Bomb! and edge.

    Cheers!

    Hi NBSers,

Just popping in to take a look around before starting on the "honey-do" list for today. The weather is too nice (sunny and comfortable) for me to have an excuse to spend my day at the computer or with a beer in hand, so I'll be back later on to report on at least one new beer which is part of the range of offerings from the Neshaminy Creek Brewing located a bit north of the city. Growing quite fond of this brewery both as a local brewery and because they are doing some nice beers that suit my palate. Haven't found a loser yet.
