How badly did I mess up

    Do you mean the airlock with the crack in it? I would throw that one away. But save the bell and the cover as spare parts for the new one you'll buy. If you already got a new one, then yes, it's okay to install it after the most active fermentation has died down. But I wouldn't be in any hurry. Make sure it's really settled down first.

    New airlock, and yes, saved the bell and cover for parts.

    I monitored the fermentation for a number of hours last night with the blow off tube and it was nice and steady with no change when I woke up today. New airlock went on this morning and it seems like it's all good. Hopefully it's smooth sailing from here on out.
