I do, but it takes two to tango.

There were people going around to liquor stores this year and offering to buy the store's entire allotment of BCBS at a premium over whatever the store intended to sell it for, if the store would agree to never even put the BCBS on the shelf. I highly doubt this was for personal consumption. Is this really what people want? A bunch of people who aren't going to drink the beer buying it at an already expensive price, only to turn around for it and sell it for some multiple thereof?

The main difference there those people are hoarding supply that should be sold to others. If you just buy one bottle of BA Dark Lord and sell it, you didn't deprive anyone else of the chance to buy it. You won the scratch off, so you weren't buying a bottle someone else would have enjoyed.

I still think the second hand market prices are ridiculous, but I think there is a difference between the guy selling his one bottle of Prop and the guy who scored 4 cases of Prop and turned around and flipped or traded all of them for profit.

Sadly, I think what you're going to see is similar to what is going on in the concert industry: higher prices from the outset. Reduce the profit margin of the secondary market and you'll get rid of the small-time scalpers making a quick buck.

With that being said, the profit margin is so out of line on the BA stuff that the raising of prices is only going to hurt the people who actually want to drink the beer, not the folks who can afford to drop $300 on a bottle.

New rule, you must open your BADL immediately and dome it on the spot.

I'd have to disagree. If there weren't people willing to spend $200+ on a bottle there would be no market for reselling period. For example, If I would've won the scratch off, got my DL variant and nobody approached me offering an absurd amount of money for it, I would gladly have kept the bottle and drank it with some friends.
I would like to think that the majority of people buy the bottle with the intention to keep it but when bills need to be paid and people are offering you hundreds of dollars for a beer, it would be hard to fault someone for taking the money. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

We joked about doing that with the '14 Vanilla I brought just see people's reactions. It's amazing the pedestal that some of these beers get put upon. It's beer. Drink it, share it, enjoy it.

I offer the first year DLD guy in our group $50 if he won a BA DL to open it right outside the line and drink all of it except one tiny sip for me, luckily he didn't win. But it would have been great to see people's reactions.

I've greatly enjoyed reading everyone's experiences from this years' DLD. This was my fifth DLD and I had a great time, yet again (missed 2010, 2012, and 2014, first one was back in 2008).

I'm reading a lot of posts of folks that were in Group A. I've always tried to get Group A but have never gotten earlier than Group B. I've had B, C, and D. I'm on the site trying to get my tickets the second they're available like anyone else, but have never got a whiff of Group A. It is hard enough just to get B. What's your secret? I know 3F keep a good chunk of Group A for in-person sales at the pub, but I'm guessing not all of you Group A folks are that local to Munster or the Chicago area and got those. Or maybe you are? Any tips on scoring Group A for those that haven't been able to in years past?

    Thanks!

i was early in group A. The guy at the variant table asked me what variant i wanted. i asked him what was available, and he listed all of them off. you could just ask for whatever you wanted. i don't think there were specific "allocations" for each group, basically first come first serve.

I don't think there are a high number of people at each DLD thinking if they win a BA DL that they'll try to sell it for a lot of $. More like, there is a small contingent of noobs and others with way too much spare cash who are willing to throw that kind of $ around for a beer.

Attending DLD is quite a pricey affair. When I've lived close, which I do now, I still have a 300 mile round trip (so a tank of gas ~$50), my wife and I buy our allotment of DL's ($160), this year we each won a BA DL ($100), tap beers (conservatively $30), food ($25), and bottles for sharing (this year was about $120), and a gift card for my buddy's parents who let us crash at their place ($60). In total that's almost $550. That is a lot of money.

When I lived on the coasts, add a $300-$400 flight to that, now we're closing in on $1K. DLD is really fun and I've been willing to put out that money for an annual event with great beer and my best friends, we've been doing it for almost a decade...but if someone offered me the chance to recoup a significant portion of that huge cost, I think for most of us it would be difficult to turn it down. I immediately put those BA DL's in my backpack after A group and never sought offers or actively tried to sell, so I didn't sell, and I will surely enjoy those beers with my family and friends. I just cannot find fault in anyone selling their BA DL's noting the above.

I guess the alternative to the lottery system is a FFF hoarder society or something. Just make it truly a money thing and be done with it.

No tips. Friend who got the tickets, pulled group A online. I pulled B on my phone, but put it back once I learned my friend had already snagged the tix.

my ticket still has the "tear away" stub at the bottom. in fact, when we got to the scratch offs, the guy holding 'em fanned em out like a bunch of cards. i only took one but saw people grabbing multiple scratch offs. that was about 11AM.

I totally agree. Or the open time needs to be before the allotment lines open.
But to say it's overflow is ridiculous. There were Bs in front of me in the D line at 5:30. Trust me they hadn't been in that position all day.
Anyway, we had a great time. Only a few in our group ended up so drunk they fell over... 11th DLD went really well considering the terrible weather. I'm really glad they went for the big tents this year. The sides were kind of awesome & much needed!

So wait -- people have a problem with others selling variants because they don't intend to drink them themselves, but have no problem with the multitudes of people who immediately run to the trade forums trying to score the best whales who, obviously, have no intention of drinking them themselves? What's the difference?

And some people here are wanting to trade a $50 bottle of beer for numerous other bottles that far exceed $50 (I've seen people asking for 1:10 trades). Seems like a distinction without a difference to me.
