I'm searching for the post saying that "people" are cool with "people" who immediately run to the trade forums, but I don't see it. Strawman?

It's not a "strawman" argument. It's pointing out that people hypocritically get apoplectic at others reselling the beer on sites like Craigslist but curiuosly remain completely silent when it comes to people trading (at a profit) the same beer. You yourself wrote: "I get the temptation, but I wish people were buying the beer to drink it rather than profit on it." If that's indeed the case, why do people tolerate others in the trade forum making ridiculous trade demands when, as you put it, they're not buying the beer to drink it? Perhaps you can start your discussion here: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/vanilla-bean-darklord.285124/

Is it truly peoples' concerns that others are re-selling it, or that they're re-selling it for a price that they can't afford? Me thinks it's more of the latter.

This thread is awesome, the list saved my butt this year.

My GF and I showed up at 5pm and walked right in. Saw some Pallbearer, bought snifters in a 10 minutes line, and hung out at the tent with some cool guys from Ohio till line time. In line I got passed so many great beers things get blurry. Two things stand out, there was a girl with a bloody face running down the line and a lot of yelling, being 6'4", 220lbs and concerned I thought I would walk over and see what was wrong, people assured me things were ok and to get back to my spot, I honestly don't know what I would have done to help anyone so I'm glad I listened to everyone. Got back to my spot no problem and some guy in a pancho gave me some TAAASTY beer from a growler, I'll never know what it was, ok, things are fun again.

My GF got her allotment first, went outside and some guy bummed a smoke from her, she obliges and he goes off on a rant that "she doesn't belong there and she's just doing her boyfriends bidding" all the while smoking HER cigarette. I come out (took me a little longer since I got a yes ticket) and see her yelling at this dude and I come walking up and the dude just bolts. Seriously? F*** that guy, sometimes I think these dudes want there to only be beer bellies and beards covered in drool walking around.

After that some guy asked me what variant I got and I was very rude to him. Sorry dude, I went from "party time be my new friend" to "I hate all these people" right before you walked up.

Then we walked back the the car, and I woke up in my garage and threw up in a bucket and on my hair.

I've been telling people I had a 95% awesome time. I can't wait to go next year!!

What I personally would consider "distasteful" would be if someone purchased their BA variant, and turned around and asked who wanted to buy it.

If someone approaches you about buying it and you didn't solicit it, that's just kind of a up to the individual thing, imho. I can say had I won a barrel variety and had I been offered enough money to cover my trip and my allotment (which $220 would have) I would've absolutely considered it, and probably have gone ahead and sold it.

I get both sides of it though and can totally understand why someone might not be okay with that.

    what's illegal?

he bought it. it's his to do with as he pleases. so long as he doesn't put it up in a retail storefront for sale then there's nothing illegal about selling something he owns.

Second DLD and we had an amazing time, if a bit muddy. Arrived around 8:30 and parked in the mud lot by the North entrance, had some great bottle shares in line and made our way inside. Got our bottles and a BA Cocoa Cherry, and continued the shares and had some taps. Big thanks to the folks with the tent West of the North entrance (Bryan?), the group with many Biscottis in the big tent, @HamMud and crew, and of course Kevin and Joe who we met in the line and then stayed with for over an hour.

Also the folks we met in the parking lot: the guys from Illinois with a generous Bramble pour, the couples from North Carolina with some amazing Wicked Weed, etc. Everyone you meet makes this event what it is, and I can't wait to try and get tickets again next year. Also the guys we met at our hotel in Merrillville the morning after, love parking lot beeradvocacy.

If any of the above sound familiar, or you met a Canadian couple in blue and clear ponchos, give me a shout!

    Well said.

I bought 8 DL's with the intention of drinking a couple, aging a couple and trading/selling the rest.

To all the whingers, here's the thing...you get charged $50 bucks a pop for the privilege of spending $20 bucks each on 8 beers. That's not taking into account the money it costs for accommodation/travel/food etc. I was there for 9 hours, and spent more than half of it in the rain, and more than half of it in lines. Lines to get in, lines to buy beer, lines to buy DL, lines to get food. I said to my GF, if I want a DL badly enough in the future i'll just pay $50 bucks for it. Saves me having to piss fart around all day to buy a few beers. I don't regret going at all, but geez it was a slog for most of the day.

Some ppl need to appreciate that a lot of time, effort and money gets sunk into buying this beer. It's not like I popped into the bottleo for 5 minutes to grab a pack.

If it's that big of a hassle then don't bother coming, buying the beer is just a small part of the day. Guess a small group of people just want a quick buck.

99% of you guys were freaking awesome!!! My girlfriend and I had so much fun. She is already talking about going again. We personally in a weird way enjoyed the rain. It built camaraderie in the fact that we were all in it together in this shitty weather! Maybe part of it was the fact that we weren't expecting a ton and ended up meeting really cool and generous people and shared our unique beers with anyone and everyone and everyone was gracious for us sharing.

    Then there was the 1%'ers
-Guy looking around tables looking for unopened bottles. I saw him grab a bottle after just walking up to the table and asked if it was his. He said no, but he asked the other people at the table if it was theirs and they said no, so he thought it was okay to take it. I told him who cares if it's not being claimed, some rightful owner might come back to get it. He proceeded to say that "this happens every year, people just leave their unopened bottles all over the place." I wanted to smack him, but just shook my head, and he asked if I wanted to share it, which I responded hell no. Then his buddy came up and tried to be all buddy buddy and offer me some of his other likely stolen beer. I denied that as well and thought that would be enough for them to put the bottle back, but they left and laughed on their walk away. Karma will get you sir.
-Guy that flipped over an entire picnic table full of beer and bottles and narrowly missed some girls sitting on the next table.
-10+ guys that would harass my gf every time I went to the bathroom, including the multiple people that asked her if she got any barrel aged versions and offered her $50 for them. Luckily I have a killer girlfriend and she's not that dumb.

Overall a great freaking time and I can't wait to go again and meet more cool people!

Bottom line is that people who scalp their Dark Lord, hot sauce, etc., can't afford it. They HAVE to recoup costs, and make a few extra bucks, just to survive. Everyone who can actually afford it keeps their stuff and enjoys it.

I echo much of the sentiment about meeting good people and receiving awesome pours, so thanks again to Mike and Drew, IIRC, for the beers and conversation in the Group D line. However, they've got to do something about all the people lining up for their particular group. When I got in around 3, the start of where the bottle line began was a complete clusterfuck. And the thing is, I wouldn't mind the sarcastic answers I get when asking if people were in line if it wasn't for the fact that it was damn cold out and raining on top of it. Low and behold, after walking back and forth for a while, it was the Group E line already waiting to get in that caused the confusion and the huge mass of bodies near where the barricades were. So hopefully with the addition of the new space on the side, we can keep these two lines separate. Of course, I don't really see the need to line up that early since it's a ticketed event, but whatever.

Secondly, I think the Floyds needs to invest in some kind of large projection screens or TVs near the tap list that can be updated with a simplified POS system so we can know under which tent has which beer. I spent too much time having to walk up to each spot and crane my neck like a schmuck just to see what was available.

Lastly, couldn't the Floyds switch to having a tote bag instead of the cardboard carriers like other breweries do? I lost bottles that way and I know others do every year, so if the cost continues to go up, it makes more sense to invest it back into protecting the bottles.

Opened my hot sauce tonight and used some with chicken breast. I like HOT sauce and spices. This stuff is a 5 out of 10 and it quickly fades. Not very sweet which is nice and alot of vegetable flavor from the peppers.

Only thing that sucks is the stuff is so thick and the opening so small, you can barely get to it and no way to really clean the bottle out. You can't even get a knife into the container. A pipe cleaner might work?

That is my whole point, if going to DLD and buying all this stuff is gonna prevent you from paying bills you should absolutely not be going. And if you are that financially irresponsible don't be shocked when you get called out.
