The higher ups at Troegs came up with Imperial Pale Ale as a play on words to mock themselves for stating they would never do a year round India Pale Ale. If I find the original article/interview I will post it.

Perpetual is an IPA. A delicious and worthy one at that.

Category 91 at the World Beer Cup 2012 was an Imperial Red Ale.

It seems Red/Amber are readily interchangeable in these categories.

Just did a price check, it was $ 11.99 a sixer at Wegmans in Malvern.

$12.99/six at Canal's in Lawrenceville, NJ. I thought (hoped) they rang it up incorrectly. Apparently not. Hope its good!!

Just picked up a case of it near Reisterstown, MD for $39. Seems like a more than fair price to me for the quality.

$39 would be ok for a price point I feel. Anymore and it is easily bypassed for better beers.

I've had the better part of a sixer in the past two days, and I gotta say it's growing on me. I really like the quality of the aroma- mostly citrus, but solid undercurrents of pineapple/passion fruit/mango. The problem, if there is one, is that it is turned to 'six' when I'd prefer it turned up to 'eight'- even in a real easy-drinker like this. It's a tough balancing act, and I appreciate where they are going with this one even if they didn't nail it. I do think that it may become a regular part of my rotation.

I agree with the people saying this beer is disappointing. Its ok but the bitterness does not equal the hoppyness if you get what I'm saying.

got a 6 pack bottled 7/10/12 on saturday. freshest beer i have ever had. defintely tasted more like a pale ale than an ipa imo. someone said it tasted like a victory headwaters on steroids. i thought that was fairly accurate.

I have been hearing a lot about this beer and I was in the mood for something different and hoppy last night, so I decided to give it a try. It was sold out at each place I stopped at but I eventually scored a 6-pack at the third place I hit up (and I was lucky to have gotten it, as they only had a few left and they were selling fast). I enjoyed it, and it was worth the hunt. Will it be a regular for me? Probably not, but this is NOT due to the quality of the beer or anything like that, it is mostly due to how my mood goes for hoppier beers and the PAs/IPAs.

$11.99 for a 6-pack at Wegmans in KOP, $10.99 at Whole Foods in Plymouth Meeting, and I think Capone's may be selling it for $12.00...I'll check the next time I am in there.

I agree with this as well.

I honestly think the negative (mine included) opinions were due to the slightly off marketing and unfilled expectations. I dont fault Troegs for it entirely, just was a let down for me. The price point is a bit on the high side too to be honest. Better sixers of comparable style available. Still a Troegs fan though, so no harm no foul.

Yeah, seriously. I've seen the word marketing over and over in this thread and have no idea what anyone is talking about.

You mentioned price point and marketing twice now, but we really need you to expand on that. What did you pay for it? Was it much more expensive than their other year-round beers because that's pretty much exactly what it's going for here.

What specifically do you mean by "marketing" of this beer? I saw a label on beerpulse and a few social media posts from Troegs. Is there any false information in this page? Not trying to be a dick here, just don't understand.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm confused as to the difference between a pale ale, imperial pale ale, india pale ale, double pale ale...and I don't even know how many other combinations thereof. I do know that a lot of folks speak of an imperial pale ale and india pale ale in the same vein, as though they're one and the same? Are they? I'm simply not well versed enough to know myself. I also know some of the confusion lies in people just abbreviating "imperial pale ale" as IPA, the same as an India pale ale, and it causes some confusion in discussion, I'm sure.
