It makes sense. I know from blind tastings in other areas, e.g. single malts, that it can be an exercise in humility. But it's a good discipline to figure out what is truly happening.

Good stuff. Any thoughts as to issues such as longevity, consistency, etc. of unfiltered beer? Just sort of theorizing as to why a brewery would choose to filter if it involves the sort of hop loss you're describing. I mean, rationally, it doesn't make any sense to spend more on raw materials (hops) than you need to, so why might a brewery choose to filter? Maybe concern about consumer perception of a cloudy beer? Concerns about bottle to bottle variation in taste?

If this stuff interests you in general, here's a link to a reasonably good set of slides that cover a bit about how the pros do these things with tasting panels, etc.

It reminds me (in a different way, but same idea) of the discussion of pasteurization in highly technical books, in other words full of math and mind-boggling detail ("pasteurization units" graphed on a temperature curve, etc.). But thanks.

hard to believe this is a serious thread. Its either a "true to style" type deal or its what the brewery decided to do. Drink it or dont...who cares really

Don't know if you read the whole thread, but it's more serious than most.

I often drink a Gibbs 100 Greensboro Pale Ale, which is very cloudy and unfiltered. It's a great pale ale that seems to have food value for sure. It just slides down and is super satisfying.

Tonight I had a draft IPEh from Beau which was really good, and cloudy - not Orange Julius but not a light haze either. It was very good, sort of English and American in taste.

There was some level of inevitability involved. I wish that I could have planned it!

I'm innocent, I swear. Timing isn't everything, it's the only thing. I would never try to leaven the gravity of zid's thinking!

Had a dinner last night. Murky as hell, but it's a damn fine beer. Great nose, taste follows, I don't give two shits if it's murky. Love my floaties.

:wink: Oh, of course you are innocent. It was purely a coincidence.:wink::sunglasses: @zid it was just a coincidence. @rgordon is right...

Guidelines to style may state it should be clear but isn't this about pushing boundaries? I prefer a murky look if it's done right it's very eye appealing.

common sense filters remove things. Like taste, sediments, critters, etc. give me cloudy and yeasty beer anyday, IF it tastes good. I always drink the yeast at the end. cheers! I could be wrong but once the yeast is in the bottle its going to change the beer taste period. you know?
