I will be in Mystic, CT for a week coming up and am completely unfamiliar with the area. What beer places are worth going to or at least serviceable? I don't know the distribution but is there anywhere close that would have Hill Farmstead or Alchemist? Anything else I should keep an eye out for?

Harp and Hound is a good place for a few bees as well as Capt. Daniel Packer....I don't think they have a crazy selection though. From what I remember there aren't a lot of options In Historic "downtown" Mystic. Head to Westerly, RI and visit Grey Sail Brewing and then go to Malted Barley. As far as bottle shops I can't really help you there but you won't find any Heady Topper in these parts...

My dad lives in Groton (maybe 10 minutes away) so when I'm down I usually go over to one of the Grand Wine & Spirits. Its not the best selection ever but there's a reasonable variety and they carry all the local stuff (Narragansett, Grey Sail, NEBCO). Make sure you check the walk-in cooler.

You have to go to westerly which is about 15 minutes away from mystic and go to dicks world of wines. Absolutely hit the malted barley in westerly awesome selection.

The A&P Liquors on Route 1 in Mystic ... Just East of the drawbridge ... is your best bet in Mystic. It's not great, but I am usually more than happy when I go in on overnights in the area. haven't heard of or found anything better.

Sounds like some really good options, this is exactly what I am looking for. Thanks for the tips! Does The Malted Barley have decent food or is it more for drinks? Are there any standout restaurants (with or without good beer) that would be worth a stop in Mystic, Grouton, or Westerly?

Is NEBCO New England Brewing Co? Is that worth checking out at all?

    Yes, and yes.

If you have time and want to swing by the brewery in Woodbridge, there's little better than meeting the brewers, enjoying some samples, and walking away with a growler or two of fresh, delicious beer. It's a bit of a haul (about an hour) from Mystic, but one of the best beer things you can do in the state.

Another CT standout that no one has mentioned so far is Willimantic Brewing, a terrific brewpub in, you guessed it, Willimantic. That's only about 45 minutes from Mystic.

NEBCO would be a bit further than an hour on a summer weekend, so assume more time if you go on a Saturday or Friday after lunch ... not open on Sunday.

For Mystic area Restaurants ... Bravo Bravo, Olio, Oyster Club, Pizetta, Daniel Packer ... I'm rec-ing those on food and not beer ...

In Mystic we always go to the Steak Loft - the dining room is overpriced, sit in the lounge and order off the "quick bites" menu. I haven't been there recently so I can't tell you what the beer selection is like now, but its a nice atmosphere to sit and have a cocktail.

Looks like we are staying in Groton now, any additional food recommendations for over there?

Olio I mentioned above is in Groton. Groton and Mystic are basically the same place. Mystic is actually part of both Groton and Stonington (i.e. Mystic is an area but not an actual incorporated town).

If you're going to be there a week - The Fisherman in Noank (this is still Groton) for swanky seafood. Wylie's pizza is pretty good if a little expensive. The Pizza Palace is a good place for a grinder (as we call them in CT).

You need to find Universal Food Market in Noank for honest to goodness New Haven style pizza. But outside New Haven! There really isn't a pizza place in the area that can compete.

There's not much in the way of taprooms out that way, but the local Cottrell is decent and pretty easy to find and NEBCO will pop up here and there. Daniel Packer Inn has fantastic food, it's among my favorite restaurants in the country. Eat in the pub downstairs unless you are the jacket and tie sort.

Right down the street, the Voodoo Grill has some great cajun food and keep walking to the drawbridge and the ice cream shop.

    This is all Groton-side Mystic.

If you're in Groton City, Paul's Pasta on Thames St. The leftovers should last you most of your trip.

Another vote for Paul's ... fantastic little joint (with no good beer, but the food is worth it)

Hill Farmstead and Alchemist are not available anywhere within a 3 hour drive of Mystic - to my knowledge, anyway.

Well, Armsby Abbey in Worcester gets Hill Farmstead on tap I believe. Probably less than an hour and a half drive, but still further than the OP was looking for.

Abbott's Lobster in the Rough in Noank (a village in Groton?). A summer-time tradition on the coast on CT. It's a BYOB place right on the water, outside seating, dogs allowed and the best lobster rolls in the area. The lines get busy during the weekend lunch rush but it is worth it.

Reviving this thread a bit. Anything in downtown Mystic that has improved their beer selection since last summer? Is Beer'd worth visiting?
