While definitely not as well stocked as a bottle shop, there's a HIT grocery store in the Rosenheimerplatz S-Bahn station with a great selection and cheap prices. If you're on your way back to the airport from midtown, that's a great last-minute stop. They'll have all of the local and national brands and even some oddballs like the Schorschbraeu "strongest in the world" beers.

Is the S-Bahn still operating despite the railway strike?

Some S-Bahn trains are running once an hour during the strike.

And U-Bahn, trams and (local) buses run normally.

We rode the BOB train down to Tegernsee, walked the short way to the brewery bier hall overlooking the lake, smallish Bavarian Alps in the background. beautiful! The beer was OK.

You can also go out to Aying and walk over to Leibhardt's which is their tap and Biergarten. Really liked the beer there.

Agreed.... The Tegernsee area is lovely, but the Brewery didn't wow me at all.... As for Aying, hitting the new Brewery for a tour is nice, but I prefer to eat/drink it Liebhards as opposed to the Aying hotel/restaurant itself. The former is more blue-collar, the latter more upper-crust, imo...

    Prosit!!!

The Tegernsee beers are good, but I think they just suffer from being in an area where most everything is as good or better. If they were located in my neighborhood I'd probably move in, though. It's just all about perspective.

On the other hand, Aying is extremely easy to get to (S-Bahn S7) and the beers are all fantastic. They might even be the best in the area depending on who you ask. The town of Aying is picturesque and makes for a nice walk. Liebhard's is a nice hall/garten and I thought their food was really good, too. Leberkase with fried eggs on top...oh man.
Forschung's is off of the same S7 line so you can double up if you have time. Tough to beat those two in conjunction.
Back in 2009 my wife and another BA ended up making a run from Aying, to Forschungs, to Menterschwaige, and Waldwirtschaft in a single day. It was quite the adventure and you can even get 2 free masskrugs thanks to the coupons in the back of the BDGTM book.

There was a big hochzeit about to happen, and it was clear they didn't want our American beer tourist types there in blue jeans and such ( I was about to talk about net worth, but not the right time). Loved Liebhardts.

Tap Room in Munich had some Three Floyds. Their in-house stuff was very good as well.

One can hardly find Three Floyds in Chicago.

I was also going to ask what a pint cost... maybe 18 Euro? :grimacing:

*Edit: Surprising -- 5,30 Euro... for a .3 liter glass.

Granted, I've never been, but CREW Republic seems like it would be worthy of a visit. They're an American-style craft brewery. They're located just across the river from the Deutsches Museum. If you're trying to scratch an itch for American or Belgian flavors, I'd rather support them than buy an imported bottle in Munich.

I quite enjoyed drinking Tegernsee and even Erdinger at the Therme Erding, it's the only time I can't complain about having to drink from plastic, I have no photos of course.
Good place to hang out and have a beer.

Do they have their own pub now?

Their website has changed, but it looked like they have (or had) a tasting room attached to their production faculty. Not 100% sure, though. No clue when I'll be back over that way, but I figure I'm going to swing by next time I am.

I think they had a pub that served their beers - they were gypsy brewers until recently as their FB page has been full of outfitting their new place with all things brewing related.

That would explain the lack of pictures on their website. I definitely remember some in the past, but a separate pub would definitely explain that. My one experience with one of their beers (a normal American IPA) was positive, so I wish them well.

Am surprised no one (also guilty as charged!) has ever tried anything from Giesinger... I went by their original, garage-style brewing set-up a few years ago for a look, but didn't get to try anything. I understand they now have a full-fledged brewpub. I WILL get there this fall, though... for research purposes, of course. Will also see if there's any new Crew location....

    Prosit!!

I have had Giesinger's Bock and am happy to report that I lived to tell the tale! It's in my Weekend In Munich thread which i don't know how to link to on a handheld device...

EDIT: Giesinger's Maibock was the beer I had, had to go back and look.

First I had heard of Giesinger, but I'll add them to my visit list next time I'm in town. They're off of Silberhornstraße. On my very first trip our travel agent set us up at the Aparthotel over there. I think that location is now closed, but I'm not 100% sure. It's a suburban area and a bit off the beaten path, but very easy to reach.
