I know it sounds crazy but what about a clean rock it might even give the beer a mineral flavor that would be preferable in something like a pale ale

you know, someone may not know better, and actually do that. For the record lead is poisonous, and does really really bad stuff to people.

I just got through a keg of whole hops in a 5 gal paint straining bag. I left it in until the keg kicked. Centennial and Amarillo. No grassy flavors, just pleasant until the end. Set it and forget it won this round. I'm sure it would be a problem for some of those oniony hops.

Their shipping is a little ridiculous. $7.45 to ship 15 marbles. I'm pretty sure USPS could do it cheaper than that.

Buddy of mine used to use marbles. Somehow they got misplaced . . . he never lived down the stigma  .

I don't understand marbles OR ball bearings. I've never used anything to weigh hop bags down and haven't had any major problems. I think the key is just leaving the hops in for a longer time frame and tying them off the bottom. If you are a proponent of "grassy flavors" coming from dryhops left too long, wouldn't the extra time it takes for them to sink (and come in full contact with the beer) be an advantage?

For the record I would never suggest using lead but to be aware of it's being in a lot especially anything from China.
