I've had St. Lam, probably my favorite beer, but never had had the chance to try Vigneronne, and it appears I will only be able to get one bottle of either one. So, for those who have had both, which would you pick if you could only have one, and how do they compare in taste?

It depends. I love both beers. I would pick the St. Lamvinus over Vigneronne as it is harder to find, and has more complex plavor, as well as stucture.

Quite different beers. One thing I will say is that Vigneronne is great fresh. Lamvinus is great either way.

Nah, I don't play that eBay shit. They are, however, the most recent big bottles brought in by Shelton and in very limited quantities. Therefore, I can only chose one (one bottle limit). Unless I can convince my bottleshop owner otherwise

True, I made an assumption. I am sure they are available elsewhere too.

    Vigneronne.

I've never understood the en masse adoration for Lamvinus.

St Lamvinus may be the best beer on earth. Vigneronne is great but doesn't exactly blow my skirt up.

The answer is, you can't go wrong either way but I'd be more likely to buy the one I hadn't tried yet.

Either you live in a remote area where you are the big beer geek fish in a little pond, and thus able to get your hands on the few bottles that get allocated. Or, you live in a big area and order online, or get lucky, chase beer trucks, line up for a store release, beg the beer manager, etc.

The first time I had these beers, I had a 2009 Lamvinus and a 2009 Vigneronne side-by-side and I thought the Vigneronne blew it away. I was really unimpressed by the Lamvinus at that point and didn't understand what all the fuss was about. A year later I was lucky enough to have them both on tap at Moeder Lambic and I preferred the Lamvinus, finding the Vigneronne a little too sweet. So I guess perhaps it depends on which batch and how much age they have on them.

The funny thing is that you don't really need to get that lucky. The Bay Area is probably among the hardest places in the country to find Cantillon (that actually gets it, at least, it's harder where Shelton doesn't distribute...) and I've found it quite a few times. Going to stores regularly and always looking is a big help.

I don't think many of us will judge you for doing weird things for shelf Cantillon. I will, but I think most of the community is cool with it.

Once upon a time the east coast got a lot more Cantillon than the west, but these days I think you guys get just as much, if not more, than the Boston area at least. Cantillon rolling into the market these days is an event. Very few stores get it, and those that do end up with small quantities and legions of thirsty shoppers. I have not seen a Cantillon actually on a shelf in about a year - whereas prior to the great purge they were everywhere.

do you like muscat grapes? those feature heavily in Vigneronne which is my preferred of the two.

Which is why I have zero interest in chasing it. I've heard that from way too many people.

You can't go wrong with either. I doubt this is the last time in you life you are going to have a chance to buy either of these. Considering that I'd buy the Vigneronne since you haven't had it.
