There's an ISO:FT: in the trading forum with a respondent insisting that his "buddy" bought some AftW off the shelf out here recently. He doesn't give the name of the shop so rather than derail the trade request that has nothing to do with Hair of the Dog further, I thought I'd start a thread here. Has anybody ever seen this on the shelf anywhere? To my knowledge it was only sold at HotD and sold out (aside from what was held for on-site consumption) rather quickly. Thanks for any info guys.

wouldn't surprise me if a shop owner went to the release and bought some to resell illegally. but most likely he's mixing it up with fred from the wood, bourbon fred from the wood, cherry adam from the wood, or even adam.

I think he's mistaken. AFTW was a brewery only release, and as I recall, the allotment sold out a couple of hours after they went on sale. You can still get bottles at the tasting room I believe, but that's pretty much it.

I think a couple of restaurants sent representatives to the release event to obtain some for their restaurant, so maybe there was a beer store in Seattle that did something similar. So I suppose it's conceivable you might have been able to find a stray bottle some place in the city, but it's pretty hard to imagine someone just happening to walk into a store and seeing a bottle on the shelf. However, I guess it's possible...

That being said... the release date was a while back now, so I'm having a real hard time believing that anyone "recently" would have been able to find a bottle on a shelf someplace.

Market of Choice is notorious for sending people to HOTD dock sales to buy stuff and then putting it on their shelves, so if anyone in town has/had it, I would assume it's them.

    This was my first thought.

True Chris, and I'm not saying it didn't happen, but think about this for a second....

As I recall, the release was a complete cluster, compounded by the fact that folks arrived at HOTD hours before they opened, many folks cutting in line (or having friends hold a spot for them in line), and then the two seperate cash and credit card lines. Also, I got the impression that if you didn't get to HOTD at least an hour ahead of time, then you arrived too late to buy AFTW. Add to that the one case per person limit, not mention the expense of the beer, and this just doesn't sound like the sort of thing that would interest a beer/wine director at MofC.

It was this, I know they were more expensive than at the brewery so it was probably illegal resale. I'm not mixing it up with any of the other ones, it was Aftw that my friend bought over there.

I didn't go into specifics because I wasn't there, I didn't ask him what specific store it was since I don't have any plans in the near future of ever being there so I don't care about the name of the store. If you need the name of the store to believe what I'm saying then don't believe me its that simple. I also didn't go into more specifics such as the price or how many bottles he bought because we were drinking and I didn't pay too much attention past that he was having Aftw at the brewery with his other friend and then a local told them that X store had it for sale if they wanted some to take home. They proceeded to go there and buy out all they had there which I think was like 8 bottles.

I don't think you should get too offended cpinto. More likely, hopsbreath is off of work and he wants to know where to go to pick up more.

You can get Adam from the Wood at Apex, for a marked up price.

I showed up 2 hours before the release and the only reason I got some bottles was because of a few gracious BAs let me buy some from them at cost.

My morning crabbiness was compounded by the fact that people behind me got cases of the stuff while I watched helplessly from the cash line.

Haha I'm not offended at all, just explaining why I didn't go into specifics and that he doesn't need to believe me for it to be true. Besides the obvious if I post it everything good will get cleaned out

Like I said, there weren't many bottles and they took them all so there wouldn't be a point in going there looking for Aftw.

Are you saying the credit card line was moving quicker than the cash line? That seems ludicrous unless the workers at the registers couldn't do arithmetic if the register didn't do it for them.

    the cc line moved faster.

Alan was the only person taking cash, and there were two credit card registers open (at least at the beginning of the sale.)

The credit line was moving faster than the cash line. Both lines were having cases handed out as fast as possible, but cards were being swiped faster than the cash transactions, creating a group of people who had paid but not received beer. As the supply ran out, I think Alan stopped the cash line completely so he could finish handing out beer to the credit line.

People in line outside were also not informed that Adam from the Wood was sold out, so they spend a lot of time waiting in line for a beer that had sold out much earlier.

Damn that sounds like a pretty shitty situation. Its funny though, most breweries end up eliminating the credit line because cash is quicker and doesn't cost them anything. One of CCBs changes for Hunahpus this year is cash only so things are smoother.

Glad you're not offended. Just trying to figure out how/if a brewery release only beer made it to distribution. As Levitation pointed out in the first response and Shmeal name dropped one place that did, it would seem a retailer sold some at a markup. That possibility never crossed my mind. And writerljberg: nah I'm not in need of any more at this point. To be honest, I prefer regular aged Adam with about two years on it to the FTW variant. Quite a bit cheaper to boot also.

I have thick skin I don't get offended easily. Are you new on the BA forums? Because this happens ALOT and its pretty much known here. Sorry for not specifying that when I said my buddy bought some a couple weeks ago it wasn't distributed but sold illegally at a markup. A store an hour away from here used to do it with all CCB releases till the cops found out and fucked them. It happens a lot and sooner or later they get fined and told they'll lose their license if they get caught again.

Not new but perhaps it happens less out here than it does down your way. It's definitely not prevalent enough that it was on my radar. Trying to keep abreast with what beers are available and where they're available in my area.

Probably since the people where you are are fiercely local to their stuff. With the growing market though and brewers not raising their prices it'll probably become more prevalent in the future, even there. It's a good option if you missed out since its usually cheaper than eBay anyways, like usually its right in the middle of what the brewer sells it for and what ebay does.

Eugene market of choice (Willamette location) did in fact sell AftW. Generally the stored 'distributes' to themselves any limited product, but in this instance that location held all of the case they had for sale. Bourbon Fred was available for different amounts of time at all MofC locations though. I unfortunately couldn't get any of the AftW bottles but did have a friend confirm that they had them and another that did get some. Marked up of course.
Without digging through regulations, my understanding is that in Oregon at least it is legal to purchase directly from the brewery for resale at retail. Still mildly annoying that a store was able to get a case in front of the many people that didn't get any that day and then marks it up to people that didn't attend the release. Oh well. I'll let my friends that made the trip out that day for nothing get truly upset.
