definitely check out Sunset Beer before or after. it's only a 1/4 mile away or so (if that). great bottle shop and chill place to hang out (and have a beer while you look at beer)

another non beer food option, that isn't even that good but is near and dear to my heart, is El Compadre in Echo Park. if you like classic family style Mexican food and margaritas

it is a restaurant though. to each their own. for me i like the space a lot. it's an old movie theatre they transformed into a huge craft beer bar/restaurant. what's not to like? the outdoor space is great for brunch/lunch. i guess i'm a homer. but it was a huge benefit to the neighborhood when it came here and i'm still a fan. though i agree the food is not the primary draw

Mohawk Bend is worth it. You will be right there. Also go to Sunset Beer as recommended. Mohawk probably has as many taps as anyone in town. Without looking I would guess it pushes 40-50 easy. The only problem is too many are devoted to Golden Road products. The food is on the goodish side.

It seems generic and ugly to me. And I just don't like the food. The beer is good, though the tap list is very IPA dominant, and their offerings in other areas is less interesting usually. Anyway, not my favorite place. I'd pick Sunset any day of the week.

yeah, they have like 70 taps

    http://mohawk.la/beer/

my only critique with Mohawk, besides that they should make better pizza, is they don't seem to have as much limited release stuff on tap lately as they used to. they still get younger every year, but it would be nice to see them get a little more aggressive with getting some extra good shit like once a week or so. that's not to take away from their tap list. they always have a solid list. but it doesn't seem to change as much lately. Tony's has way more events, tap takeovers etc..

Thanks for the advice again folks, hit up Sunset Beer Co and dinner at Pine and Crane. Really wanted to check out the Hermosillo but it didn't jive with our schedule.

Hey folks - staying in DTLA for the week and have some free time today when I get in and want to hit up a couple bottle shops...

It looks like I can take the 720 bus to/from Downtown to Ramirez, and the 4 to/from Sunset Beer, both of which look like pretty straight shots?

I get a bus fare card at any subway station? And it's the same card I would use to take the blue line out to LB?

Don't really know the bus situation, but I would Uber to either/both.

I learned the portion of the subway/bus system I needed to when I tore my achilles in my right ankle and couldn't drive.

It is the same card for both systems. and $1.75 now (it has gone up a few times recently) per swipe.

Not sure on the buses you would take, but I would guess if you got your information from the metro website it is right.

The big problem with the bus system is the timing is awful. I have waited up to 25 minutes for a bus, and then 3 of them show up on the same route at the exact same time. If you are on the subway the trains are like clockwork, every 14 minutes. If you have my luck you will be out of money and need to stop to put money on the card as the train is arriving in the station.

As an alternative to Uber, I would look at sidecar. It tells you the prices before you get in the car, and you get to pick your driver and see the car/driver before you even request the ride. Otherwise it is the same service without the premium markups.

If you are going to be in DTLA you might as well stop at Angel City. It isn't spectacular, and the beers for the most part are average, they do make some interesting beers. The one they made with Sake yeast was really interesting, and I thought it was good, but needed a few more tries to make really good. The main reason to go though is that the space is really good and almost worth going just to hang out in.

Ok thanks! I'm used to the busses in Brooklyn operating the same way (getting bunched up with long waits) so am sure it will be fine!

So then it will be no problem for you.

Quick warning I forgot though, the last 4 times I have taken public transit there have been officers waiting for people getting off and checking swipes on the cards, and giving tickets to people who got on without swiping. This was 3 times on the train, and once on the bus. Not that I take it often, but it was 4 times in a month, and 0 times in the 7 years before that since I have moved out here.

Fuckin google maps... Second trip to LA in a row that a search on "Ramirez Liquors" sent me to the one on Soto with no other options. Last time I thought it was pretty decent for being so small, this time I made some small talk with the folks there and asked some questions, on my way out they were like "you know about our beverage center, right?"

Decent walk down Soto but much better selection!!

Yeah, the Ramirez Beverage Center is a must-stop, especially for out-of-towners. It's nice having the other spot on Soto right around the corner, too. Plus, they are just so freaking nice there. Everyone I've ever encountered at any of their locations has been really nice and very helpful. Cheers!
