Aren't Session beers already vying for the new kid on the block trophy?

I bought one of those in Tokyo. It was a little too sugary sweet.

Maybe. Maybe someone will get absolutely crazy with lagers and it will be a hit. White Wine Barrel aged Apricot Lager?

I actually don't think lagers are poised for the big time quite yet. I can't count the number or posts on here or Untappd where someone writes the equivalent of "meh...I don't like lager" or something to that effect. That's of course after giving a gastank-aged quintuple IPA 5 stars. I think we're still several years away from undoing the damage caused by 30 years of light macro lagers.

I think sours will be next. But I think it will be IPAs for a few years to come. The hipsters are obnoxious. They need beers equally as obnoxious. IPA, DIPA, TIPA. Soon they will just be drinking hops tea. (I think they do actually) sours fall in line with that. But at any rate, I have to give them credit for adding momentum to the craft movement.

    Session isn't a style, it's a strength.

Chris, I basically agree with you. I would guess that we are about a decade away before the hardcore craft beer drinkers (e.g., BA type craft beer drinkers) will have a significant portion of that market enjoying lagers. I would argue that the 'AAL effect' is from a longer duration than 30 years but for the younger beer drinkers it is the last 20-30 years that matter to them.

I find some solace in that non-hardcore craft beer drinkers seem to have a more 'balanced' view on beer. For example, Sam Adams Boston Lager is consumed by a lot of beer drinkers. If you are willing to expand the definition of 'good beer' a bit there are also a lot of people drinking beers like Yuengling Lager, Shiner Bock, etc.

    Cheers!

    Jack

I think if they can get the prices a little lower (a few dollars more than the big Macros) I think session beers have the ability to really explode.

This may fall in the IPA category, but I just loved the few Belgian IPA/DIPAs that I have tried...Sure, my loving them doesn't make a trend..

The next big thing for the hardcore beer geeks to latch onto is mead.
