Just one thing I would add (as you've obviously already gotten a lot of great advice on this thread).

If everything else is equal, then I would agree that it makes more sense to try to find a place on the East side (for all the reasons already mentioned). However, if you find a cheaper or otherwise more attractive spot to stay over on the West Side, I wouldn't hesitate to stay there instead. The downtown area is pretty compact, and so it's fairly easy (and quick) to get from one side of town to the other. For instance, to get to Belmont Station from Bailey's might take you all of 10 minutes of driving time. If you're staying up by NW 21st or 23rd avenue, you can hop on I-405 and be over by HOTD in the same amount of time (or less). Also, while there isn't the same concentration of great places on the West side that you'll find on the East side, you could probably still stay fairly well entertained with Deschutes, Bailey's/Upper Lip, Fat Heads, Henry's, Full Sail River place, etc. There's also some fairly decent restaurants over on the West Side as well (Higgins, Tasty n Alder, Paley's Place, Andina, MEC, etc.).

    Enjoy your stay!

actually you bring up a good point...my wife (no kids) has been compiling a list of places she wants to go shopping at..it seems like that SE area has lots of cool/unique/funky shopping, would that be correct?

Will be in PDX May 21-25th, do bars/taprooms allow bottle shares? I don't know If I will get around to do any IP trades(GF only lets me meet so many random dudes per month), but may just bring a few things from the MN/WI region just to share with whomever is around at said breweries

*sorry if this has been touched elsewhere, searching seems like a whole thing

Most places don't allow it, but some places will, if you talk to the owner in advance about it. I hesitate to speak on behalf of any particular bar, but I suspect your best best would be to try places like Bailey's, Beer Mongers and Growler Guys. Good luck.

Yes, on SE. Downtown (aka The Pearl District) - around Fatheads / Deschutes / 10 Barrel / Bailey's - is also solid for shopping / boutiques.

Interesting to note that what is now The Pearl District used to be the home of Henry Weinhard's brewery (the building is still there, gutted and rehabbed) and some seedy punk rock clubs. Where once you were assaulted by the smells of spent malt and and the cobbled streets were littered with needles and used condoms ... you now have a whole foods.

I'll be visiting Portland this summer. Here are my five breweries/brewpubs I hope to visit. Will be limited to kid-tolerating places. Any that you feel should be replaced, and if so, with who? (Already been to Deschutes and although I love them, don't feel need to return.) Will be staying in Mt Tabor area, so will also hit Belmont Station.

    1. HOTD
    2. Cascade
    3. Breakside
    4. Upright
    5. Ex Novo

Also hoping to hit Hood River for a day. What's the deal with Lodgson? Is the farm closed to the public for good, and if so, when does their tasting room open?

    Cheers and thanks.

Sounds like they (Logsdon) are still negotiating with the county. This is all the information I could find at present:

    http://www.hoodrivernews.com/news/2015/apr/11/county-curbs-logsdon-brewery-barn-expansion/

Did you check their Facebook page? Used to be that you could find the most up to date information there.

Will be in PDX May 21-25th, Ill be staying west of the river, pretty close to Montgomery Park, I won't have a car of my own, Ill be with my wife, sister in law and her boyfriend, they like beer, but not crazy about it. , We are heading to degrade on the 21st, and that kind of is my big beer tick for the trip. Im sure I'll have some free time of my own. I see most of the goods lie east of the river, if anyone has any suggestions near Montgomery Park, fell free to share, otherwise looks like uber or something like Zip Car may be my option if Im left carless for long periods of time

For sure breweries: Many being east
    Cascade
    HOTD
    Upright
Fat Heads ( Appears to be west of river, but still > 2 miles from where I am )

Is the Logsdon barrel room in Hood River proper still on schedule to open this month?

My wife & I are going to De Garde on the 21st too!

I will probably have some sort of hat on (NY Rangers if all goes well lol, NY Yankees otherwise)

Dave seems to be having issues with the City or County. He already bailed on the first location.

DeGarde is a Yankee-free zone. (and yes, I just made that rule up, all by myself. The actual folks at DeGarde may have a different opinion.)

BTW, I'm house-sitting for some friends that are going to NYC for a week next week. What easy to grab beers should I have them grab? Beers that they can grab at a bodega or store, that we don't get out here, and they won't have to hunt for.

As far as NW locations go, Montgomery Park is fairly accessible. The #15 bus line runs from Montgomery Park, down NW 23rd, east across downtown, and then down Belmont all the way out to Gateway Transit Center. That single route puts you within a few blocks (from west to east) of Bailey's Tap Room, Hair of the Dog, The Commons, Cascade, Green Dragon, Horse Brass, Belmont Station, and The Cheese Bar. If you don't mind walking up to 1/2 a mile you can add Base Camp, Baerlic, BeerMongers, Apex, and probably more to that list.

You can also take a short ride on the #77 from Montgomery Park to the Rose Quarter and from there you're ~6 blocks from Upright. After Upright, you can walk a few blocks north to Ex Novo, and then head a few blocks west on Russell to Widmer's Gasthaus.

but hey, we both love Robbie Cano right?!

hmm, they don't want to buy beer in a bodega (due to the "inner city" nature of the stores, ALL beer is priced by the individual beer, so a sixer of Sierra Pale will cost $25 (lol I know)

however, the numerous Whole Foods sprinkled throughout the city almost all have a solid selection. I just don't know what we have here, that you don't get there, that is even comparable! I would suggest the Whole Foods downtown by Bowery - great selection, won't totally break the bank. some up & coming breweries that have started bottling...Big Alice, Transmitter, SingleCut, Grimm. most of the really good stuff though will be draught only (Other Half). but they will be able to find Bell's, Founders, Prairie, some Crooked Stave, etc. Hope that helps!

no problem, and oh, right nearby that Bowery Whole Foods is Top Hops, a GREAT bottle shop/bar with a good selection and to-go beers are priced like a store (not a bar)

What's the growler laws in OR? Can I bring a 40oz. stainless growler to fill with another brewery's name on it?

First time Portland visit this weekend with wife, daughter and two other couples. I think we'll go to DeGarde on Friday, and spend the rest of time downtown.

Any special Memorial Day events? (fireworks, parades, special tappings?)

My understanding is that anything that closes is legal

Probably... Some places don't like to fill containers they can't see through.

A local can confirm, but pretty sure de Garde is 21+, so if your daughter is under 21...
