Living in SoCal I have yet to try Black Note. I'm hoping its the one beer I like from them.

I wasn't thrilled by SN Hop Hunter. Maybe my 12 pack was bad as it was from Montgomery County MD who doesn't treat beer right, so I'm willing to try again, but mostly felt "meh" about it.

Not sure what you mean. Refractometers measure any number of things, but sounds like you are using one that measures specific gravity since you used the number "1.100". Carbonation itself shouldn't affect reading since you only need a few drops and it would probably be driven out, but carbonation indicates that there's probably alcohol present.:astonished:

By the way, Specific Gravity readings aren't a conclusive indicator of a beer's "sweetness".

To answer the OP topic: Founders Imperial Stout. A hot mess, unless I got a bad 4 pack.

Refractometers are calibrated using sucrose. They work OK for beer wort, but once fermented it is the alcohol that gives an erroneous reading. There are some calculators that will do corrections.

You can find out the FG using a refractometer, but you need to know the OG to do that.

It was far too piney and bitter for my taste. I prefer citra and mosaic hop type flavors.

Im also hoping the same thing. Two hearted was the biggest let down ever, expedition is over priced and everything else thus far has been mediocre.

Bourbon barrel aged stouts. Some are good, most are not, at least for my own personal tastes. :slight_frown:

BCBS and KBS. Just not into the whole bourbon barrel aged stout thing. I love bourbon just not with the beer. They usually come off as a bit too hot/alcohol to me. Im sure they would be good with some age though but I don't get the hype. Also Bells Two Hearted, I've tried it multiple times thinking maybe I just got bad batches. Just tastes like a malt bomb to me.

So I bought a six pack of Grapefruit sculpin due to all the BA hype and how the guys cant seem to keep it in stock at the bottle shop. Now there was nothing wrong with the beer. I just feel like i've had many IPA prior that have heavy grapefruit notes. Not sure why I was expecting something different with this one, maybe the hype got me. But to me it just tasted like a good IPA. It wasnt bad but at the same time I wish I hadnt spent 11 dollars on it.

120 is only good after 4 or 5 years. Otherwise, it's rancid.

Had this at Toronado's Barleywine festival this year during SF Beer Week. One sip and poured it out. Woof.

Not your Father's Root Beer. Drinking it as we speak. That semi-spice after taste is not appealing would rather just drink regular root beer.
