I bought a bourbon Barrel Brick Kiln today for $12, and with the wife back in school, I am short on cash. Presently there is probably no other brewery in the country where I would pony up that kinda money for one 12 oz bottle.

    I bought
I bought a BA 'Big Foot' 750ml for $15 last week... Not your, or any Ohioans fault we over pay for Jackie O's. Just lack of other readily available in state options I suppose.

EDIT: Could you imagine if Lagunitas opened a brewery in C-bus and started pumping out a 22oz 12% BA IMP Coffee stout for $8.99?! Jackie O's would shit themselves! Glad I grabbed my High Westified today!

I don't think you can legitimately call it overpaying if it sells out at the price charged. overpaying is when I paid $17.99 for that BA Bigfoot, then at the next store i paid $15.99. However, since it is so rare i did not feel bad about it. If people are willing to pay the price it is worth the price. Overpaying makes it sound like we have buyers remorse, but since it is so damn good and we continue to buy it, that buyers remorse may not happen for awhile.

Fair point.... would Jackie O's sell the same way in say maybe Cali, Michigan, South Carolina or Vermont? Say Ohio had Russian River, Founders, Hill farmstead, Wicked Weed etc for sale here... Would you be paying $12 for a bottle of BA Oil then?

Its almost like we operate under capitalism? To be honest, considering the limited supply of some stuff and the fact retailers literally ration stuff (for the most part) we're lucky to have the price points we do. I would guess if true market dynamics were at work, for many limited items we are currently buying at a discount.

Speaking of true market dynamics - one would think we could then have access to all the stuff above!

(Sorry finance guy here, the beer market stuff fascinates me).

My beer guy: I have Jackie O's Vanilla/Coffee Bean!! One bottle limit!

Me: How much?... Think I'll pay $3 more and grab this 6 pack of 'Ballast Point VAS'

I'm glad you guys like paying that much. Ironic as it sounds, I love Ohio grown beer! Took my first trip to Jackies O this weekend and after a few mediocre brews I then drank Madtree... Then went on to buy four 6'ers of their IPA for $9.99 each to bring back up to CLE! Thanks Madtree!

Since Brick Kiln is so rare you dont mind paying $12 for a 12.75oz bottle... Which is about 1.5 X's the amount of the overpriced $18 style you felt like you got ripped off on? Do all Jackie O's fans live by this?

Other than maybe Firefly or Chomo (which are both fantastic beers, IMO) I don't think that any of their beers could be considered mediocre.

Can we go back to hating on Hoppin Frog?

Mediocre and Jackie O's are rarely used in the same sentence. What the fuck were you drinking? I used to be a Jackie O's hater a few years ago when they still had the STAFF membership. I thought they made overpriced hipster beer. I was ignorant as fuck back then. I love them now. $12 for one of their barrel aged stouts is a great price for a high quality product.

Now, let's go back to Hoppin Frog for comparison. Dollar per ounce, Jackie O's is worse than Hoppin Frog. The key difference is the love, care and attention to detail both breweries take. Jackie O's always averages at least 11 months barrel time for dark beers. They are more interested in quality. That care costs more money. Hoppin Frog barrel ages their beer for god knows how long. I think it's only 3 months if that. BORIS #200 unveiled their deviant ways by making a great beer by actually barrel aging it to taste rather than to cost.

That's the difference. That's why $12 is a steal for 375ml BA Oil and $14 is a decent price for 22oz BA BORIS.

LOL. Madtree is the very definition of a mediocre brewery...a couple decent beers but no soul, no consistency and some horrendous beers (anyone have the "gose" last summer - owner was convinced it was better than Westbrook, guess he likes butter with his salt). Take their over-hyped beer of the month, Citra High - anyone can throw a shit ton of citra hops in a beer, but it takes skill to avoid a DIPA becoming a booze bomb. Opened one, thought it was decent, it warmed up then tasted like it had a shot of vodka in it, I poured it out then headache city the next day.

Yes. Last time I checked, Ohio has Founders, young Padawan. And Jackie O's has joined Hill Farmstead for events where their beers were VERY well received. And, again, LOL, this time at Wicked Weed.

Well said and 100% on point! Jackie O's is an ARTISAN brewery. Brad is an artist, something many brewers know nothing about these days. There's a soul to the beers and a spirit of experimentation and pride in product. That's always going to cost more, but there will always be people who value it and are willing to pay for it.

not sure, because it is a "what if" that we can't actually test on all but Founders, but it sure would be nice if we could!

Take a moment to reread my post. Not once did i say I felt ripped off. I said i overpaid relative to what I paid at another store...but was ok with it because..do I really have to rewrite for you? I merely pointed out that saying overpaying for a beer at the standard price is not accurate. Why are you so angry? If people want to pay for a beer they love, who are you to say they can't or shouldn't? I am not a big fan of much that Fatheads has going, but a lot of people do. Good for them! I am not a big fan of Madtree, you are apparently. Good for you! So, what's new to Ohio today folks....

Jackie O's stouts are incredible and I buy them when I can, but I do feel like I get ripped off tremendously each time I purchase a bottle. You have great beers like Bourbon County, KBS, SMS, BA Siberian, etc all falling at $6 or less a bottle so why the hell are we paying $12 for Jackie O's? I get it, the labels are slick and beautiful and the bottles are sexy and its all hand labeled but what the hell does that matter once I pour it into a glass and drink it? I want to pay for the beer inside, not the arts and crafts involved. I feel the same way about Prairie (disclaimer, I buy all their new beers I haven't tried yet too).

The on Jackie O's beer I've ever been able to justify paying what I paid for was BA Wood Burner and Vanilla Dark App. I've bought every new release that's hit distro just for the sake of trying it but I can't imagine going back for seconds at those prices.
