I paid 20 bucks a bottle for my KH "off the shelf". Dont really care if it is a whale or not.

I agree with frank. The bottle of black note tastes really good, much better than the black note at FoBAB. i did also feel that black note is a solid beer, but I was a little underwhelmed.

agreed. opened a bottle on sunday with some BAs and once i get around to entering my notes into the site, i will have 3 beers that i've graded a perfect 5 - Black Note, Abyss (2010), BA SC (2010)

I liked rare better fresh than with a year with it. I have two more KH coming to me- I can't see them lasting longer than a few months in my possession. No way I'm going to save this to see what its value becomes. I'mma fuckin' drink em!

i only had .rar for the first time earlier this year, and i loved it. i wish it were a little bolder and hotter in flavor (srsly, i like that), but it was fantastic. i'm drinking king henry fresh as well.

You know it wasn't even much hotter, but 'bolder' is spot-on. The bourbon was so smooth from the start, which I think is part of the appeal. And yeah, KH is good to go. Really enjoyed the bottle I had a month or so ago.

King Henry = 12,000 bottles of an off the shelf beer available over multiple states. (not a whale, nor will it be)

Its funny how it seems like every new beer released now days that is really good no matter how many bottles are released, or how widely distributed it is, it is a whale. lol

Don't get the hype, thought Abacus/Sucaba was much better and is WAY easier to get ours hands on.

People who have KH - WHALE!

People who don't have KH - SHELF BEER!

    And the beat goes on...

Its a whale because it tastes great, that's about it.

Exactly, the "problem" with Rare and KH is that most of the people who have them absolutely love them, so why trade them?

I have, and have traded a handful of bottles of King Henry away now for other harder to get off the shelf beers, and I will still say that it is an off the shelf beer.

King Henry is really good, but not the best out there, and though it can pull some hard to get beers, its not a whale.

I have it and I've been trading beers of fairly high status for it. I will not trade any bottles unless we're talking something ridiculous.

Just for reference, can you name some BA barleywines you like better?

    That makes one.

In all honesty though, what prevents King Henry from becoming a whale if Rare has become one? They have similarly high reviews, with KH shooting up the Top Beers list way faster than Rare did (admittedly, probably because it's much easier to justify opening a $13-$25 bottle on any given night than a $43-$60 bottle). I just don't understand how/why this is even much of a debate. That and I think whale speculation in general is kind of silly, but apparently that's just me.

Not trying to sound like a jerk, but your comment is completely subjective, which leads us to the core of the issue. In some people's opinion KH will be [is] a whale, they will try to trade it as such, and those who do not have it but also consider it a whale will trade heavily for it. To others, it will always be an off the shelf beer, and henceforth in their eyes it will never be a whale/worth trading crazy stuff for.

Like I have stated in many other KH threads, KH has too much stout/rare/chocolate qualities for a typical barleywine, and is more of a strong ale to me. (to each their own)

Off the top of my head, here are a few others that I prefer over KH.

Kuhnhenn BA Barleywine, BA Numbskull, Perfect Storm, Great, ect...

Would you like me to name some other barelywines for you that I prefer over KH? lol

Just because I dont think KH is as good as a lot of other people dont let what I say effect what you trade for it. lol
