Welcome to this week's New Beer Sunday thread. This is a sanctioned hosting, as I am filling in for @cavedave, who is, as we speak, high above Earth in the alien mothership, teaching our soon-to-be overlords all about our beer culture and tickle-torture.

I've been a regular poster here, dating back to my very first post back in October of 2012, but this is my first hosting, and I hope to do the masters proud...

So, good morning, heroes of hop and maidens of malt - I hope the day finds you well. Today is the day and this is the place to share your new beer experiences. Pictures are always perfect, but silence is golden :slight_frown:  - so I'll mention the weather instead...

Cloudy and humid here on the island long, currently riding that 60-something wave, but with temperatures expected to hit the mid-80's to ensure a muggy and disgusting day. Man, am I grateful for air conditioning.

The ancient Sumerians knew nothing of the air conditioner, such as it is, but they sure knew their beer. Brewing since 3500-3100 BC, they even had a goddess of beer, Ninkasi. They loved her so much that they literally sang her praises.

Here, written down around 1800 BC, but dating back farther than that, is their Hymn to Ninkasi...

Borne of the flowing water (...)
Tenderly cared for by the Ninhursag,
Borne of the flowing water (...)
Tenderly cared for by the Ninhursag,
Having founded your town by the sacred lake,
She finished its great walls for you,
Ninkasi, having founded your town by the sacred lake,
She finished its great walls for you
Your father is Enki, Lord Nidimmud,
Your mother is Ninti, the queen of the sacred lake,
Ninkasi, Your father is Enki, Lord Nidimmud,
Your mother is Ninti, the queen of the sacred lake.
You are the one who handles the dough,
    [and] with a big shovel,
Mixing in a pit, the bappir with sweet aromatics,
Ninkasi, You are the one who handles
the dough, [and] with a big shovel,
Mixing in a pit, the bappir with [date]-honey.
You are the one who bakes the bappir
    in the big oven,
Puts in order the piles of hulled grains,
Ninkasi, you are the one who bakes
the bappir in the big oven,
Puts in order the piles of hulled grains,
You are the one who waters the malt
    set on the ground,
The noble dogs keep away even the potentates,
Ninkasi, you are the one who waters the malt
    set on the ground,
The noble dogs keep away even the potentates.
You are the one who soaks the malt in a jar
The waves rise, the waves fall.
Ninkasi, you are the one who soaks
    the malt in a jar
The waves rise, the waves fall.
You are the one who spreads the cooked
    mash on large reed mats,
    Coolness overcomes.
Ninkasi, you are the one who spreads
the cooked mash on large reed mats,
    Coolness overcomes.
You are the one who holds with both hands
    the great sweet wort,
Brewing [it] with honey and wine
(You the sweet wort to the vessel)
    Ninkasi, (...)
(You the sweet wort to the vessel)
    The filtering vat, which makes
    a pleasant sound,
You place appropriately on [top of]
    a large collector vat.
    Ninkasi, the filtering vat,
    which makes a pleasant sound,
You place appropriately on [top of]
    a large collector vat.
When you pour out the filtered beer
    of the collector vat,
It is [like] the onrush of
    Tigris and Euphrates.
Ninkasi, you are the one who pours out the
filtered beer of the collector vat,
It is [like] the onrush of
    Tigris and Euphrates.

    Woo, early NBS thread.

Fresh grapes at first, then some spices—cinnamon, really—carried by brown sugar. Rum! Bourbon! Quad. Somehow Quad+Bourbon round out to give a nice, fruity dark rum profile. Pomegranate comes with warmth, sustained by a bit of rum and bourbon, cabernet too perhaps.

These Deschutes specials are always a treat.

Not too sure what Pomegranate Molasses is.

    Doesn't matter.

Some interesting tidbits in that poem. Bappir. What is bappir?

Excellent timing. I was just reviewing this and getting ready for NBS and *boom* the thread appeared. I am excited about today's new beer as I have slowly become a tea drinker over the last few years. I drink a hot cup of green tea every morning before work, and have started drinking iced tea lately as well. So seeing a green tea IPA excited me. I've had a few different chai stouts, so I know that tea and beer can make a good combination. If I ever home brew, I'm going to make an Earl Grey stout one of these days  Anyway, thank you Greywulfken for hosting today's shenanigans and it was cool to post on and view yesterday's Show Yourself, BA's! thread. Here we go:

Stone 2015 Collaboration (Baird and Ishii) Japanese Green Tea IPA 10.1% ABV

First of all, I took a photo of the lacing because sometimes I like to describe it as "world map lacing" ... this is a perfect example. The lacing looks like various strange continents on a world map -- pretty self explanatory. The beer is an opaque creamy kind of light orange. The head recedes to a light wisp, and leaves the already mentioned world map of foam.

Sticking my nose in this, I'm immediately confronted with a lot of spices from hops. Black pepper, cedar ... very spicy. Underneath that I do find some green tea. A papery, earthy subtle green tea aroma.

The beer tastes like the aroma -- spiciness hits the taste buds first, kind of coating over the main element: green tea. The main body of the beer is green tea ... it has some slightly tangy bitterness but almost as soon as I dwell on this tea component, I'm constantly reminded of the spicy hops. It is well balanced in that regard. The finish is spicy and as the beer warms, I'd even suggest some citrus notes in there.

I have to say the 10.1% ABV is pretty well hidden. This is probably one of the easiest 10% beers I've consumed. It's a pretty dry beer overall, though. Now it's time for some appropriate music. I'm quite happy with my theme today. I think I'm turning Japanese ... so I may as well go all out and be Big in Japan while I'm at it. Cheers!

    Mornin' NBSers,

Just a quick stop by over morning coffee (yep just coffee.... ), before doing some errands and chores from the "honey-do" list and making a shopping trip to Trader Joe's (which does not offer beer in PA).

Lucked out earlier this week when I stopped into a PA bottle shop (still pretty rare around here) which had some fresh beer in stock (and we all know how scarce that can be... :-)). So I'll be back later on to report on one of the new year round offerings from Boulevard, their Heavy Lifting IPA.

    Enjoy!

Good morning all you New BSers! Wow @Greywulfen! Hell of a way to start the day - a little poetry never hurt anyone. I didn't notice any Triceratops in your haul - you need to find some. Although I'm obviously not worthy, here is my lowly contribution for today:

Undated green bottle at 45 degrees into snifter

Aroma light with some mulled fruity esters, ephemeral

Head small (< 2 cm, aggressive pour), off white, fizzy, diminishing to irregular ring and partial layer

    Lacing none

    Body light orange, clear

Flavor slightly musty, traces of fruits, ends slightly sticky; no hops noticeable, no alcohol, no diacetyl

    Palate medium, creamy, soft carbonation

    Appearance 3.5, Aroma 3.5, Flavor 3, Palate 4, Overall 3.5 Rating 3.35 rAvg 3.43

Didn't really like this - too sweet and flavors are too muddled.

Thanks @Greywulfken for starting us off !

Today I have a beer that I am very excited to try. One because it's ticker-ish, being a limited edition. Two because it's a morning beer and there is a pretty prominent group of morning people here ! Now I just I need to get my tasting glass and my notebook, my pen and my favorite glass, my tiltly desk chair and my favorite opener . . .

    Happy New Beer Sunday

This is Ommegang's Joemmegang. I like the pun on the name and a double word score with "cup of Joe" reference and the straight pun on Ommegang. I think they are a dynamic brewer. This beer is made with select coffees and cocoa nibs. They talk about the brewing in their blog,"whirlpool, cold crash." I will leave all that to them.

    Cheers!

Tea like color. Honey gold uplifted by burnt orange. Light tan foam stand that lasts. A woody hue of reddish brown entrances as the beer suggests fruit on the vine. It actually resembles coffee beans. Now maybe that's not "the hard way" but that's something alright!

Nose is deep roasted coffee. Chocolate that is light atop an endless eath. Ice cold milk. Taste is huge coffee. Smooth, full and deeply sweet. As deep as the beer is it's not awfully sweet. The mouthfeel is full, slightly chewy even, and has a pleasant stickiness. The malt is roasty but not black and the beer is strong with coffee which is a lovely contrast . Caramel a touch nutty and the chocolate is so deeply woven into the beer. The mouthfeel is good and this finishes sweet with a pleasnt bit of bitterness that does not stand out. Lingers with mellow coffees and pleasantly sweet earth .

What's so amazing about this beer is that the chocolate seems to be in there by fathoms.

Yep, this is definately a @Greywulfken hosted NBS! :stuck_out_tongue:

It's been warm and humid today, so I guess I better drink a beer that has a fitting name (okay, it isn't anywhere near this hot in WI).

I took a drive to both New Glarus brewery and Tyranena yesterday, because I really like beer. New Glarus has this very cool beer garden with ruins all around it. My daughter was sure having a good time.
    [IMG] [IMG]
I bought some of the R&D Wild Bitter to share with some other BAs.

In the afternoon I went to Tyranena to enjoy their Two Lakes Graprefruit triple IPA. It made me think of an imperial version of GF Sculpin! Also had the Rum BA Imperial Brown, which was probably the best I have ever had.

This morning I am enjoying this treat from Ohio, a BA coffee vanilla stout from Triple Digit Brewing that was sent to me by @deadonhisfeet

It is insanely delicious with big, sweet malts, hints of roasted coffee and espresso. The vanilla stands out along with the barrel notes and there is plenty of delicious caramel. A truly fantastic beer to sip on this morning while I make some cinnamon apple pancakes.

    Goooooooooood Mooooooorning NBS!
The weather here has been beautiful here in So Cal, mainly due to a return to spring. We actually had thunder and lightning along with some good rains. And the days that follow are truly divine. And the first day that followed was the Bruery Copperversary celebration. A phenomenal gathering of Bruery fans, Bruery beers, and thankfully many other breweries as well. They ranged from many locals to those further afield like Cascade and Fifty Fifty. But that was yesterday, so I'll try to come back with a beer from today. It's still a little early.

New Glarus Road Slush has a thick, beige head, that, unfortunately, dies away rather quickly and leaves little lacing. The aroma is of sweetness, brown bread, mild chocolate and coffee, and oats. Taste is the same, with an acidic char and bitterness, which seems to come more from the char rather than from any hop bittering. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and New Glarus Road Slush finishes wet, but with an underlying powdery aspect.

So I gotta say, I'm reviewing some beers in styles I don't normally go to so far - an oatmeal stout and red ale (or red IPA, whatever) - and I've found both to be very enjoyable - prolly partial to this red as opposed to the oat stout...
Hoppy and bitter, with citrus of orange and grapefruit pith, and some pine and dank resin; assertive malts give it some heft and chew; a sweetness akin caramel and a smooth, medium feel... reviewed

The missus is under the weather and appropriately, under the covers, while I'm just moving through beers without her buzz in my ears :grimacing:

Looking forward to the Duck/Hawk game later - kinda pulling for Anaheim, but all I really want is to bring The Cup back to NY, so I'll take whichever team we have the best chance to beat - but I'm being premature, as we still have an incredible Tampa team to get past first. Those guys are awesome, but fortunately (?) seem to play a similar style to us, so I'm hoping that, that fact, Lundqvist, and home ice, are enough to win the series...

'Bout to eat a sammie of mortadella, hot soppressata, and imported prosciutto on Tuscan-style bread
