I think anyone who signs up for a BA account, logs in, rates beers, reads the forums, bothers posting, AND thinks they are really one of the cool guys needs an objective second opinion.

but aren't beers rated by style? Not on a spectrum of every beer you've had? I give 5's out when the style is nailed and I can't imagine the beer being better.

There are several beers I feel are flawless in my own eyes, but I'm fully aware a lot of people would probably score them a 3. Tastes and perspectives are very subjective.

No 5's from me. Only beers I've rated 4.9 or better are Pliny the Younger, BCBS, BCBCS and Ayinger Celebrator.

Depends if you like to rate beers "overall" or rate them against their own style. I like to compare things against their own style. If i drink a crazy awesome barrel aged RIS and give that a high rating, that shouldn't devalue the high rating I'd give to the top IIPA, or sour, or hefeweizen. I wouldn't go back and change a rating across styles. Likely only within a style

Nah brah. Barrel aged imperial stouts, double IPAs, and sours should only be rated a 5!

Appreciate the shoutout to the traditional celebrator in the ranks against the big hype generators.

Couldn't agree more, and I think the analogy to the 100 rated beers on here is a good one. To me, 5 just means a beer is amazing, not that it couldn't theoretically be topped or that there can only be one 5 ever in history. These aren't Nobel prizes we're giving out, just an internet beer website rating.

One could argue the number one beer on this web site shouldn't be a 5 due to its appearance.

Of course, more and more IPAs have that murky/cloudy appearance, and based on a recent thread it's either due to lazy brewing or is done purposely by the brewer to add certain flavor(s) to the brew.

Moreover, styles are constantly changing. A new Beeradvocate joining today might feel Zombie Dust is the perfect pale ale, and rate it a 5. While I might feel Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is the perfect pale ale, completely flawless. But the other guy might feel it's not hoppy enough, as it leans towards an older recipe for American pale ales.

I have 2 out of 689. One of them that I cant see anyone not giving it a 5 is Double Barrel Hunahpu. The flavors are all so distinctive (chili peppers, cocoa, Apple Brandy, Rum, cinnamon, vanilla) and are all so perfectly balanced. The aroma, body, taste... I wouldnt change a single aspect if I could (other than being able to drink it again).

That brings me to the whole "5" rating thing. As I mentioned in a similar previous thread, I dont see how anyone can say "there are no 5's" myself. Of course everyone is entitled to rate/score how they like and we all can taste different things with the same beers. That is part of the fun.

For me personally though, a 5 does not indicate that a beer is the perfect beer (best of them all). To me, it is just that it is a perfect representation of a style. Sure, this can bring up the whole category/style labeling thing that Soxpoint is not on board with, but I am not going there. Besides, I like categories and stats. I cant live in a world where dogs and cats are living together! Mass hysteria!.

I feel there can be multiple 5's within a style too. You could convince me that Parobola and BCBS are both worthy of one. For the people who have never rated one as a 5, have you all actually never had a single beer that you wouldnt use a magic wand to change some aspect of it?? Not being a dick. Just really curious. Maybe I am too easy to please. I have only had 2, but a handful of others are real close and I feel like I am nitpicking. No way I could ever brew anything close to many.

I also dont rate on the 1-5 scale based on how much I enjoy it in general (favorites/biased ness). If that were the case, I would have 6-12 "perfet" scores easily. Chillwave would be one of them. I love that beer and drink about 2 cases worth. I tend to like the sweet DIPAs more though, so I am objective enough to realize that it isnt as good all around as many others.

The only place I struggle with my rating is when it comes to American Adjuncts. I do have some in the good to very good range, but it seems like I should have at least a 4- 4.5, in there. Not objective enough in that area. Probably should be 2 scores like someone else mentioned. One to style, and one for overall enjoyment (drinkabillity:stuck_out_tongue:)

Yea, Im from maine and have a camp in VT so I'm up there a couple times a year. Aaron is ******ed, good thing i traded it when the value was like .5 a BAMC. Now its near impossible to get - are they doing it again? I dont think its been announced (could be wrong), I know its going to have to age for a long time before it gets released

I don't rate beer for other people, I do it so I can track what I like. I don't care about defined styles, I don't care about hype, I don't care about rarity.

I've given 2 beers a 5, Heady Topper and HF Abner plus a bunch at 4.5+. While I understand you may not like HT if you're not into IPA, I don't understand how some people claim it's terrible and their local XYZ IPA is so much better.

But then again I'm also the person who loves RIS but hates BCBS.
