That is incredibly kind of you, and if you are still down for it in the future I would love to do that trade with you, but unfortunately my dog just broke his leg and we had to drop about 3 grand we didn't have in medical bills to get it fixed so my extra spending cash is going to literally be at 0 until I can get some of that paid down. I really do appreciate your offer though, that is incredibly generous of you for a beer I never thought I would get to try. You seem like great people man.

I did stumble upon a whale at a bar - BCBS Vanilla 2010 for $50 - and I split it with the guy sitting next to me. I almost was happy I was forced to drink it right then. I typically struggle with wanting to save rare beers for special occasions with the proper company. Suddenly I have 30 nice bottles aging in my closet and no occasions coming up. Not all super rare, but same idea.

Whales here, whales there. Its just beer.

Yes it is a bit hypocritcal since I have had a lot of whales. But it still comes down to that it is just beers.

Dark Lord is a whale, Speedway stout is not. Do a blind tasting and 95% would like Speedway more. Been there, done tha, multiple times.

i thought a whale beer was for being traded over and over again many times, zigzagging across the country until it becomes damaged during a shipping accident.

They were made to be consumed and enjoyed, not to be an f@^king display piece and stared at or worse, pimped out on eBay or Craigslist to some poser looking for a trophy.
Dink them as you like to drink, with friends, alone, in a bar frickin funnel them if you want it's your beer.
I just had a KBS last week, a pint pour in a bar totally unexpected, it also was the beer back for my Bloody Mary with only a slight up charge, $1.00. Best start of a day I've had in a long time

Beers no good unless you drink it. If I get some good ones like barrel ages narwhal or bigfoot I buy 3. I to drink, 1 to share, 1 for the cellar. Bought a goose island bcbs coffee, gave to to my nephew for graduation.

It would depend on who I was with. If I was with people who would appreciate it then, yes. I don't usually wait for a special occasion to drink a whale. Drinking a whale is special enough on its own.

You don't keep a whale as a pet...you slay it.

I usually drink them with a friend as soon as possible as long they are of appropriate age, but hardly ever alone

I can't drink for the next 6 months, so I will have a stockpile to drink thereafter

I have a group of people I love sharing beers with. One person being a local brewpub bartender. Any rare release or "whale" I get will for sure be shared with him and probably one other person. I like the idea of sharing that incredible experience with people.

And I suppose for the restaurant scenario, yes I'd drink whatever whale that I had interest in. Probably with no regard to the dollar amount. Take advantage of the opportunity and enjoy every sip.

I don't have access to many, but if you consider Mexican Cake a whale, I had it...really didn't like it that much, now I trade whatever meager amount I can scrape up

Both..I have a few I'm saving..and a few have been imbibed by myself and some friends..and as far as seeing a whale in a bar/restaurant and drinking it there?..shit..I would have missed out on Marshall Zhukov & Parabola '10 if I thought that way...if it's available and it's something you really have been wanting to try and it's not available in your area or via trade, and it costs a little more..then why not? Why take a chance on missing something you may not have another chance to obtain..just my opinion.

I'm not even sure if I've had a whale (everyone's definition is different), but anything unusual I get my hands on I always drink within a couple weeks. I then save the empty bottle for display purposes. Saving an unopened bottle without the intention of drinking it seems both pointless and ridiculous.
