FWIW, Citra comes off as tropical fruits vs. citrus for my palate.

Some folks also perceive cat pee from this hop since it has high levels of 4MMP.

If I were to add Citra to the hop flavor chart I would put it squarely in the fruity portion.

Perhaps it is time for me to state my caveat: we all have our own individual palates and we will all perceive hop flavors/aromas differently.

    Cheers!

I just brewed a batch - 13 lbs 2 row, 1 lb crystal 15 - with citra & mosaic hops, with Giga yeast VT Ale - every bottle I open smells like a field full of fruit and happiness.

The beer quality of "happiness" can sometimes be elusive.

Cheers to you for finding this elusive quality!!

Since we seem to be discussing IPAs: My recent batch of Peter’s IPA (@pweis909), which I hopped with equal proportions of Centennial, Mosaic and Simcoe hops for flavor, aroma (end of boil) and dry hop additions is 4 weeks ‘old’ now (bottled on 4/23/15). I had a bottle last weekend and I was a bit surprised about how the Mosaic hop seemed to have dominated then; a BIG fruity flavor including flavors of blueberries. I have a feeling that this beer will be a chameleon over time with citrus dominating at some timeframes and pine dominating at other times. Of course I could be wrong and maybe in the next week or so it will just be an enticing balance of citrus/fruit/pine.

Homebrewing is always an interesting hobby!!

    Cheers!

Glad to hear this was a nice beer. I'm brewing an American pale this weekend with pils, a touch of munich II and GNO's and hopping with primarily mandarina with a touch of us northern brewer for a touch of pine and earth. I am always nervous using new hops without a commercial example to look towards.

Another vote for Mandarina Bavaria, have had really great results in IPAs, saisons and wheats.

Equinox and Galaxy! Both of these make ridiculously good single hop IPAs and work well with other hop varieties as well.

ah Cascade, so good and comfortable. an old friend really.
except for Centennial which is just a better Cascade.

i'll also vote that Sorachi Ace is just not very good. can't make myself like it. and I have a 1/2bbl of Brooklyn to get through with friends.
    Cheers.

I'm a big fan of Citra, Mosaic, Amarillo, and Centennial for a citrusy pale ale

Report back on the mandarina northern brewer APA...
Pretty disappointed, not gonna lie. I essentially get the same flavor profile from mandarina as I do from cascade. I used 3 oz kettle additions, and 2 oz dryhop of the mandarina vs 2oz kettle additions of no brew. There is a nice earthiness I attribute to the No. Brew and the archetypal cascade flavor of citrus rind as well. I should have just brewed this one again with centennial. I know I enjoy that version. :flushed:

Could you post your recipe with hop schedule? I have the same yeast and was planning on brewing something similar this weekend, but I was going to add some wheat as I'm going for the cloudy/hazy look that many Treehouse beers, like Julius, have.

Mandarina Bavaria, Mosaic, Citra, and Centennial here. All are great, and make an outstanding APA/IPA.

One last report on the mandarina... entered it I to county fair and just got paper work back. Both judges have piney and earthy as descriptors, one judge has me down for melon and fruit, the other judge commented on the lack of citrusy hop flavors. In summation I feel mandarina, despite its aa content, is better left out of american style pale ales. I thought about using it in an all pils kolsch though for a little something different.
