Good but not as good as last year IMO...cans and draft have hit Seattle

Different breweries collaborating, completely different beer. Last years was lightning in a bottle/can, we can only hope they resurrect it at some point in the future.

You shouldn't have any difficulty obtaining some. I'm sure there will be a veritable ocean of it in cans all over the NW (a lot grocery stores had cans last year), and my guess is that there will be less demand this year as well.

I'm a little uncertain about that, actually. I'm not sure the average person buying beer at Freddies realizes it's a rotating collaboration.

People who remember last year's version will note the difference pretty quickly. Then they might end up buying less. (I ended up buying more than 3 cases of last year's 3-Way, and I never buy that kind of quantity. But if you tell me there's a canned beer that taste just like that, I'll buy a case NOW. Maybe even 2 cases.)

Will "the average person buying beer at Freddie's" even realize that it's the same brand, since the packaging has changed?

To be sure, my comment is speculative. However, it's based on the following observations from last year's version:

From what I can recall, the demand last year seemed to grow and grow as the season went on. Many consumers (myself included) heard good things from bartenders and store staff, and bought the beer based on their recommendation. The response was almost universally positive, and so demand seemed to mount as well (not everyone raved about it, but I honestly cannot recall one negative opinion). Initially, it seemed like you could find it on the shelf for a week or two after a delivery would arrive. Towards the end, cans were getting bought out almost as soon as they arrived in the store.

Frankly, it's really hard for me to see that happening this year. I suspect that initially sales will be strong, as folks remember how good last year's version was, and so will buy it, hoping the current version will be comparable (which IMHO, it is not). My guess is that we will see just the opposite of what we saw last year. I suspect that initial sales will be strong, but will die back as the summer season goes along. The beer is good, but as Glen pointed out in the previous thread, it really doesn't seem to stand out, given all the other great IPA's you can typically find in the market in the NW.

To use your example (which I agree with), I think the typical buyer at Freddie's will buy the beer initally, assuming it's the same one they bought last year and liked so much. Whether they like the current addition or not, they'll almost certainly realize the current version is very different, and I think over time, sales will fall off, even at Fred Meyers.

    Shrug. Time will tell...

Last year's version was great when fresh, but man, if it sat in your fridge for a month, it was a completely different beer. One of shortest windows of DRINK THIS BEER NOW DUMMY i've ever experienced.

Not even taking last years version into account....I would rather drink Overdub as opposed to this years 3-Way.

This. Does anyone know if they're doing more than one canning run of Overdub? Or is the 4/20 run the only batch?

As far as 2015 3-Way -- while it's clearly nowhere near as good as 2014, I don't even think it's as good as the 2013 batch, from what I recall. As to availability, who knows what the demand will be like, but I know I'll probably only buy one or two 4 packs this year, as opposed to 15+ last year. Guess I'll start looking to 2016 3-Way..

it's like trying to win back to back superbowls. Do you discount the team if they failed to do so?

last year's three way was outstanding. This years? I haven't sold my season tickets..........

Well I remember they did Suicide Squeeze for a while last year and Overdub is Suicide Squeeze II essentially. I'd assume it'll be brewed again.

I haven't heard one way or the other. The beer lover in me hopes they make more, but the retail portion of my brain hopes they don't because the barcode is the same as 3 Way. Trying to keep track of 2 high volume beers with overlapping barcodes is kind of a pain in the ass.

Only if they don't hand the ball off to Marshawn at the 1 yard line. But who the fuck would do that?

Last years 3-Way was one of the best beers I've ever had. My opinion of course. I am holding out on the new one until I feel I wont be as disappointed.

thats saying something i thought Suicide Squeeze was way better than Overdub..even if it is still a good Session IPA.
I have the new 3-way in the fridge..later tonight

OK drinking a can now..its definitely not a hop bomb, but its pleasing enough. Kinda reminds me of many fresh hop ales, the hops are there but not in your face.
    Soft drinking.
I think it might disappoint hop heads but i think the "Fred Meyer buyer" will be pleased.

Went to the 3-Way release party at Crows Feet Commons in Bend tonight.

So yeah, it's good. 2014 is still better, and I still like Overdub better. I'll still pick some cans up.

Regardless of the obscenely predictable hype/expectation letdown, this boils down to the quintessential "to each his/her own" conversation. I experienced wild batch variation last year, in addition to the incredibly steep drop-off mentioned above. I liked it, and occasionally loved it.

As two beers next to each other, they couldn't be much more different. But I really like this year's anyway. I love pFriem IPA, which seems to speak the loudest here. I love the nuanced fruit, melon, peach fuzz, and the slight dankness hanging in the background. Clean, crushable, flavorful. Wouldn't change a thing, personally, and I hope every year's versions continue to forge their own identities in the years to come.

I definitely got melon notes in there (especially honeydew). I also got an herbal note (perhaps what you're calling "dankness") which made the beer decidedly "more-ish." This year's version might turn into quite a grower. It will probably take at least 4-pack to reset my expectations and start appreciating this one for itself.
