SOUTH DENNIS, Mass., --Local beer lovers on Cape Cod and around the region will soon have another craft brewery to add to their tasting list when Devil’s Purse Brewing Company opens its taps to the public in the spring of 2015.

“This is an exciting time as our equipment arrives and the space is beginning to look like a brewery,” said Matthew Belson, co-founder of Devil’s Purse Brewing Company. “We still have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks such as hooking up the equipment and brewing test batches of beer before we can start full production.”

The idea of starting Devil’s Purse Brewing Company began in the kitchen when Belson, 43 and co-founder and fellow Harwich resident Michael Segerson, 40, started homebrewing together almost four years ago. What started as a hobby quickly became an obsession with the two friends and fostered their goal of starting a craft brewery on Cape Cod.

“We have spent a lot, I mean a lot, of time brewing together and all we talked about was beer and how amazing it would be to open up our own small craft brewery,” said Segerson.

Along with brewing beer together Belson and Segerson traveled extensively to craft breweries in New England and around the country to meet with professional brewers to learn about the industry and the requirements for commercial brewing.

Located at their 5,500 sq. ft. facility at 120 Great Western Road in South Dennis the brewery will use a 7-barrel brewing system and plan to distribute to local Cape Cod pubs and package stores. Packaged beer, including growler fills, will also be available for retail purchase at the brewery. Beer styles will focus on American influenced ales as well as classic European ales and lagers.

“Our focus is taking high quality ingredients and making flavorful, delicious beer that can be enjoyed in any season, with any meal or on any occasion,” said Segerson.

With work ongoing at the production facility craft beer lovers should be able to have a growler filled at the brewery or a pint poured at a local pub sometime by late spring of this year.

“Launching Devil’s Purse Brewing Company has been an incredible journey and we are just anxious to start brewing beer,” said Belson. “We think Dennis is a fantastic town and we cannot wait to share our beer with our local and greater Cape community.”

Right on the Rail Trail, about 5 miles from where we stay in the summer - good luck, I will certainly give it a shot.

Homebrewing for less than 4 years is their experience?

    Regardless, good luck to them.

Just wanted to revive this. Devil's Purse opened for tastings / fills this weekend. I swung by today and tried four of their five offerings (I had previously had the pale ale at a restaurant). I'm looking forward to going back. They had on a Kolsch (very authentic), ESB (not my favorite style, but nice), the pale ale and 2 IPAs. Both IPAs were good, nicely balanced.

Anyway, guys there were cool and the scene was laid back (I brought my 4 and 14 year old with no issues). They have growlers and crowlers. Prices were reasonable for fills. Tastings are $5 for 4 pours.

Looking like this will be a very nice addition to the Cape scene.

I did not make it to the brewery myself, but was able to try the Skatemouth Pale Ale (growler) Cross Rip IPA (crowler) and Pollock Rip IPA (draft at Red Nun Dennisport). Skatemouth reminded me of some English style pale ales, like a Cisco Whale's Tale, which is not my favorite style but certainly a nice local option. Pollock Rip was more reminiscent of some of the better widely available IPAs, maybe comparable to Smuttynose Finest Kind and I would gladly drink it regularly even against the other good options at the Nun. Cross Rip was my favorite of the three, evidently a limited release, I assume due to hop availability. To my uneducated palate the flavor reminded me of some of my favorite Mosaic-hopped beers, like a Trillium Melcher St., but Untapp'd suggests that what I was tasting was most likely Nelson Sauvin, which I haven't had much but will certainly seek again.

Yeah, Cross Rip is Nelson Sauvin and quite solid (openly admit Nelson is one of my favorite hops). I also agree that Pollock Rip reminded me of Smutty Finest when I had it at the Nun.

Are growlers returnable to get a deposit back, or do you purchase them?

They have 32 oz crowlers. I got three and forgot to ask the question. Pricing appeared to include crowler. I did not ask if they would fill 32 oz glass from elsewhere. I didn't see what their 64 oz was, but figured it was glass (definitely $5 for purchase).
