I think more people are coming around to this. I've said in other threads that I expect pilsners to be "rediscovered" as palates tire of super hopped styles. I know that I had a period where I was just sick of IPAs and drank nothing but pilsners for a few months. I think I'm seeing it more in my local breweries, too. Bauhaus, Bent Paddle and Tin Whiskers here in MN have introduced really nice examples of the style in just the last year or so.

Teach me then about the variation within the style. I may be wrong, but for the most part Im pretty sure all Pilsners consist of simply pilsner malts and some hops but not much, with very little to no hop aroma. Is there anything else ever added to pils?

I have a psychological aversion to Pilsners. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Pilsner is Miller Lite. I know it all in my head but I can't get around it for whatever reason. What should I go try that will help me overcome this?

I have nothing of substance to add that hasn't already been added, but go pilsners! There's nothing like a well-crafted pilsner in the warm weather

Like anything else, it's all about amounts, recipes, and quality. Taste a few of them side by side, and you'll see the difference. And if you don't like pilsners, that's totally cool. I just hate that everyone thinks they're all the same.

Pilsners or Lagers are meant to be enjoyed an appreciated for what they are. Not to be compared to other styles or beers. They are amazing and go well in a hot day, for me, they go well everyday!

See the third post in this thread. But Pilsner Urquell, Pivo, and Little Yella Pils are some of my favorites. And I get the aversion, I really do. The AAL has turned a lot of people away. But so many people in the craft beer community are so willing to give so many new styles a chance, and it seems that pilsners have fallen by the wayside, which I think is a shame.

I totally agree that side by side youll be able to break down that not all these Pils are the same. I think most BA's know that as well.

Love me a Urquell in the summer. Cheers

Heartily agree. Too many here seem to think heavy hops and high abv big beer = better. I've seen plenty of craft drinkers with that attitude. They tend to be relatively new to good beer(5-8 years or less is new from my perspective). Almost invariably their palletes are wrecked from overhopped, big beers to the point that a world class pilsner is lost to them. They can't appreciate the delicate and subtle characteristics. I much prefer beers with characteristics that aren't over-the-top and in my face. Took the liberty of fixing your "flaws" typo.

Troeg's Sunshine Pils, fresh as you can find it/get it. (But I don't think they distribute to NH so you may have to make a trip to MA.)

*And just keep reminding yourself of the fact that Miller Lite bears the same relationship to an authentic Pils beer that Kraft Easy Cheese bears to a block of Cheddar cheese or that Movie Theater Popcorn "butter" bears to farm fresh butter.

I lived on Pils for the 2 years I lived in Germany, hate to be that guy, but it tasted way better over there than the imported stuff here (Bitbuger & Jever especially)

Pilsners are my #1 favorite style. Though I prefer them subtle and not overly hopped. Great Lakes the wright pils is one of my favorites when I can find it.

Love 'em. I'd take afresh Keesmann Herren Pils or Faessla Gold Pils over just about anything.

You are not alone. I love a well made German or Czech pilsner. Yum.

Oddly, Czechs who are into beer denigrate beers like Pilsner Urquell and Staropramen as the "crap beer from the big guys" - rhetoric not dissimilar to that employed by American craft beer fans when referring to Budweiser/MillerCoors - preferring instead pilsners from smaller breweries. When I was in the Czech Republic, I tried my fair share of microbrewed pilsners, but none surpassed Pilsner Urquell or Staropramen - at least not by my humble estimation.

I do love a good pilsner, but multi-decoction mashing seems to be a vanishing art, and American brewers always seem to over-hop. Pilsners are one of the styles in which you just can't hide behind hops, and attempting to do so always seems to throw off the balance.

It's funny that we always talk about beers that are gateways to macro (usually pilsner) drinkers , and I'm recommending the opposite. I'd say Prima Pils is one pilsner likely to appeal to a BA. Highly hopped by pilsner standards but still balanced, crisp and delicious.
