Can't disagree with that, but if you can get good Helles I'm envious.

I drink all sorts of different brews, but when I think of "beer" in the generic or platonic sense, a pils comes to mind. Right now my fridge is hosting one or more of Jack's Abby Sunny Ridge, Jever Pilsener, and Sierra Nevada Nooner (but curiously no Notch Session Pils, which is typically in there too).

“Grainy flavors can also be contributed by highly toasted malts. If you are making your own toasted malts, allow them to age at least two weeks after crushing so the harsher aromatic compounds can dissipate.”

I have never brewed with “highly toasted malts” before. If I ever choose to brew with my “own toasted malts” I will indeed make precautions to permit the “harsher aromatic compounds” to “dissipate”.

It was 85 on Sat and a Miller Lite was what I was offered and graciously accepted and will say with no reservation that I enjoyed it.

I came home and had a Jever and enjoyed it more.

I agree as per my post on page 1:

"Victory: Hip Czech, Braumeister Pils – Sladek, Braumeister Pils – Hallertauer Mittelfruh, Braumeister Pils – Saaz, Braumeister Pils – Tettnang, Braumeister Pils – Spalt, Prima Pils"

Have you had a chance to drink the Pilsners they brewed for the recent Craft Brewers Conference (CBC)? They brewed a CBC Spalt Pils and a CBC Tettnang Pils. They were both tasty but I really, really like the CBC Tettnang Pils.

    Cheers!

Toasting/kilning malts is a highly complex process for any maltster. When I toured the Weyermann maltings, I was allowed to take pictures of every part of the facility except the malting kilns, as the technology they use to produce what are generally considered among the very best pilsner malts in the world is highly proprietary. Other maltings tend to toast their pale malts more highly, which leads to husky/grainy off-flavors. You do not need to toast your own malts to notice the difference; just compare, for example, Schill vs Weyermann pils malt. If you still can't detect what I am referring to after that, I don't know what else to tell you.

What does Miller Lite have to do with pilsners?

One of my favorite styles and being in PA, we have MANY great ones to choose from and they are fairly popular here. Pilsners are my go to beer and when I am in the mood for something refreshing or I don't quite know what I am in the mood for, a Pilsner will hit the spot every single time.

Nothing like a good Pils. Some are way better than others.

Pilsners are not a gateway beer. They are awesome!!! Pilsner Urquel, Lagunitas, Paulaner, Troegs, Victory. Give me one of these any day!

Love a good pilsner. Cracking one open after a couple of IPA's or Red Ales is a perfect in between brew to take it down a notch

I like pilsners, based on my somewhat limited experience with them so far (two German-style and one Czech.) Specifically, I like how they always seem to have a more interesting malt flavor to them than other lagers on the "lighter" end -- coming across like a liquified form of biscuits or multi-grain crackers rather than just a simpler "bready" or "grainy" sort of taste -- and also how they've got noticeable hops in the flavor (and different sorts of hops -- grassy, sometimes a little lemony, sometimes even brushing up on the spicy range), but not overwhelmingly so like IPAs and some of the hoppier pale ales.

...and now this post has got me looking forward to opening up the Sierra Nevada summer pack in my fridge later this week even more than I already was, as I know Nooner is one of the beers in there... XD

The problem with Pilsners, besides having to be made right, is they must be FRESH. When you can get a good one fresh they can be divine.

Pilsners are a style that I had been extremely prejudiced about and never gave them a fair chance. However, they are slowly growing on me. I've been drinking Sierra Nevada Nooner and Stella Artois (from a can; non-skunky) all weekend, and I must say they certainly hit the spot sometimes. Not to mention that Saranac Wild Hop Pils is one of the best beers I've ever had. That's the beer that convinced me to explore pilsners more as well.

Nope; actually in the recent months I've ramped up my pils consumption probably tenfold. I grab a pils from Paulaner almost every time I take the train into Boston and so far this spring/summer both SN Nooner and Weihenstephaner Pilsner have had a near-constant presence in my fridge. Tröegs Sunshine is another go-to American-made pilsner for me as well.

Its a more subtle style that I've recently gained more of an appreciation for, bit its always been on my radar.

I have to admit, I was pretty excited when I started seeing canned Stella. That's a my go-to draft beer if I'm at a bar and the selection is lame or I don't feel like spending money :flushed:. Non-skunked it's a solid, crisp and enjoyable lager and a great lawnmower beer.

If you like Nooner see if you can try Tröegs Sunshine Pils too, I find them very similar (Sunshine is maybe a touch more hoppy) and are my top two American pils' right now.
