I enjoyed drinking a couple of Victory Helles beers on Memorial Day. A tasty and quenching beer on a hot day.

    Cheers!

I've looked at the beer-finder on Victory's web site and there's no Helles in my area. Much as I like rattling distros in this area, I'm not sure it's their fault. Yet.

Makes it easy when it's cheaper than every other beverage on the menu (breakfast, lunch, or dinner!).

There are some great stouts out there too, but when I take that first sip the thought that always enters my mind - "Guinness".

Trust me, I understand! Stouts have always been my favorite and I really like Guiness so I guess there is not the negative association in my head like there is with Budweiser

FINALLY got a hold of your "new" Helles. I found it to be incredible, there were only two in my mix-a-six though. I look forward to having the second one soon (I wanted to save it).

SN Nooner Pils, Saint Arnold Summer Pils, Victory Prima Pils, Real Ale Hans Pils. After a hard working day, any of these ice cold do the trick. I will alway have a Pils at hand.

Just curious, you say stouts are a favorite style and you really like Guinness. On this site Guinness is generally considered a mediocre stout at best, compared with craft stouts. I'm talking about regular stouts, not big imperial ones. If you've had many craft stouts, how do you find Guinness enjoyable? It's bland, watery, and uninteresting, imo.

You're not alone, but you're in the clear minority ... of BAs, which are, ourselves, a clear minority of craft beer drinkers. So take that for what it's worth.

Pilsner has never been my favorite style, but despite my love of big beers, my favorite style may well be Kölsch. It's no more powerfully flavorful than a Pilsner, so I hear you; instead of overpowering flavors of hops or barrels, it's more about the delicacy and perfection.

...that said, getting a great IPA stateside is a lot easier than getting a great Kölsch.

I sometimes imagine that the average beer nerd has the emotional response to drinking big beers as a fifteen-year old masturbating with a mouth-full of Pop Rocks. I get it, it's a huge beer aged in bourbon barrels... with vanilla beans... and dark cherries... run through a Randal... aged for five years... blended with a splash of NG Raspberry Tart. It's the flavor equivalent of Boobs and Explosions. If that's your thing, more power to you.

There's more to the beer world than palate bombs. I lose my mind when I finally find a subtle beer that is magnificently balanced, more so than a huge beer aged in bourbon barrels... with vanilla beans... blah, blah, blah...

Well said. The "average beer nerd" you describe tends to be fairly young and less experienced in the world of beer. As you get older, you gradually learn to appreciate the more subtle and nuanced things in life - whether it's music, food, beer, films, etc.

and I know others share this opinion of Guiness. to be fair, since I have gotten into craft beers (which was this year so I am a newbie) I have not had a Guiness. so maybe I will feel much differently when I finally have one again, especially since I have settled on the Russian Imperial Stout by Northcoast Brewing and Vanilla Oatis by Ninkasi as my go to stouts. and I can't wait to try KBS as well as Goose Island. so there is probably a decent chance I will eventually drink a Guiness and think....yuck.

don't get me wrong, I have had some amazing pilsner, one recently as Issaquah Brewhouse (which serves Rogue). but still, after all those years of drinking Budweiser in college (had no taste back them) I just always experience that association, even when drinking a good pilsner. not sure why

That's too bad- I still usually have my pick of a half-dozen or so solid (Bavarian) choices around here. I usually just go with what's freshest, using 5-6 months as a cutoff (especially considering some are dated a year out) and they are always fine. Just this afternoon I could have had either Hofbrau, Spaten or Hacker Pschorr bottled in January if I didn't decide to grab the last sixer of Hofbrau Maibock instead.

It is pretty great to shuttle between Helles and Pils, hopefully you guys just haven't found the right store yet.

German pilsners generally are rather hoppy. In my experiences drinking pilsners in Germany, prima is pretty much spot on.

I would be very interested in hearing which pilsners you were drinking in Germany and where you found them.

Mahrs Pils, Keesmann Pils, Weihenstephan Pils, Fässla Pils, Augustiner Pils plus many others I've forgotten by now. All at the source.

I definitely agree that German pilsners are rather hoppy (especially some of those you quote). But even then, the IBUs are in the 30s, whereas Prima is in the low 50s...not to mention the late aroma additions that go into Prima that are generally absent in those German versions.
