Ah, so... yeah, that makes sense - boy, if they released this again, I'd surely buy another bottle or two...

Here's my pic from December 9th, 2013...

A milk stout from Brazil... not bad, actually.

170515 on the bottle -- presumably meaning best before May 17th 2015. Well, it's May 27th. Fingers crossed I don't die. (sarcasm...)

Appearance: Looks great going into the glass. Super thick and rich looking pitch black color with a tan head. The color is just about pitch black with only a little bit of ruby on the edges of the glass. Head slims down and stays there -- virtually no lacing to be found.

Smell: Eh, something about it smells cheap. It smells very sweet -- artificially so. Very sweet on the nose with almost a corn adjunct aroma underneath some cheap milk chocolate and roastiness. Kind of nervous going into this. The aroma isn't horrible, but it doesn't smell like a beer reeking of quality.

Taste/feel: A fair bit like the smell. It has a flavor of cheap gas station coffee with two or three packets of sugar... that's the best way I can describe it. There is a definite low quality barley (maybe some corn?) flavor there that I very often get in cheaper brews. This beer goes in sweet, and stays that way. The finish has a slight (and much needed) dark roast flavor with a modest-at-best bitterness. The feel of this is fairly creamy with a slight prickly carbonation... that carbonation is much needed, as it keeps this beer from drinking like a syrup. The mouthfeel is just about perfect for the particular style.

I'm a bit surprised I'm even rating this so high, since the sweetness I'm getting out of this comes off as straight corn syrup. That, coupled with the seemingly budget quality ingredients, should make for a very unappealing beer... but it's actually pretty decent. If you're looking to try a beer from Brazil and want it to not taste awful, this is probably your best bet.

    Cheers!

    Review fun:

Really good pale wheat ale. Aromas and flavors of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pear, apple, wheat, and biscuit; with some light banana/clove and floral/grassy hop earthiness. Slight grassy bitterness on the finish; with good balance and robustness of citrus hops and bready wheat flavors. Very slight touch of wheat tartness. Medium body and carbonation; some moderate bready creaminess in the mouthfeel. Classic American wheat yeast flavor profile as expected with the restrained banana notes while still showing pear/apple fruitiness. Really enjoyable and smooth drinking. This had a significant amount of hop flavors while still remaining true to style in other areas; with no bland flavors at all.

A damn good Flanders red ale. Aromas and flavors of tart cherry, cranberry, plum, lemon, green apple, red grape, cider vinegar, caramel, toast, biscuit, brown sugar, hay, straw, grass, and musty funk. Fair amount of fruity/acidic tartness on the finish; with balanced dark malt flavors with a great balance of acidity with slight creaminess in the mouthfeel. Very smooth and drinkable as a result. I am used to all levels of acidity in this style, and they really did a great job and making it refreshingly tart and smooth while still retaining a good showing of malt character. Really delicious and well balanced.

A bit of a gusher opener, but no problems with the flavors. Really nice stuff! Aromas and flavors of caramel, toffee, toast, vanilla, maple syrup, brown sugar, brown bread, coconut, bourbon, oak, raisin, plum, apple, and light butterscotch; with some bourbon/oak earthiness. Really well integrated barrel and malt flavors with great balance; on the less roasty side of the baltic porter spectrum; with a light-moderate showing of yeast fruitiness as well that is not overdone. Light spicy oak bitterness balanced malt sweetness nicely. Very smooth for the ABV as well. I felt the stout was better overall, but this is a very nice beer with style in mind and nice pronounced barrel complexity.
