Pilzn water is very soft, but there are many waters in the U.S. that are softer. Portland has less mineral content.

Moravian barley strains have good flavor. PU also malts their own barley, so I don't know the specs for that.

It's kind of funny that when Hobo gets those beers, they are almost always a couple of dollars cheaper (and that is in the middle of Cambridge). I love Armsby but I always feel like the value of those higher end beers is better at Hobo. I DO love that I can get any of those when I go to those places however.

It is out in 22 oz bottles here in WMass.

I love how the Lagunitas pils tastes, but hate that it's 6.2%

I got some fresh Zatec when it first became available a few years ago -- the Saaz hops were definitely to-style when fresh and the beer was delicious. Since then I haven't found it as fresh and it seems to become blah.

A little while back Evan Rail tweeted about this great (somewhat technical) analysis of Czech beer from the Czech Journal of Food Science: "The Phenomenon of Czech Beer: A Review" by Jana Olšovská, Pavel Čejka, Karel Sigler and Věra Hönigová. It compares different Czech and foreign "Pils type" beers on a wide variety of chemical and sensorial parameters and discusses the various ingredients and processes that make Czech Pilsner unique.

Funny, on the Mahrs website in English they only mention the Pilsener malt, while the original German does list the Münchner Malz. And the recipe for this beer in Zymurgy does include Munich malt, but I somehow forgot about that. I shouldn't have, since I brewed a version of this recipe earlier this year!

This video shows the grain bill as including Munich malt, too. Dunno why the English version of the web site only mentions Pilsner...

If I ever make it up to New England I will certainly be on the look out for this beer.

    Cheers!

Has it popped up anywhere as of yet? I haven't seen it either.

I would love to try it on cask. Where did you have such an opportunity?

That could explain it, I suppose. Same with when we used to get Herold- I never had the sense that I was drinking it at its best. I wonder if those beers would sit on the shelves as much these days.

The Heater Allen Pils I had a little while back was fantastic! It was an extra in a trade but it's so good I might actually try to track more down.

A gent upthread noted that it had appeared in Western MA, so I went looking for it today in Boston and presto, there it was, rebranded as Busker Czech Style Pilsner. (Just bombers, though.)

I got it on cask at Deep Ellum in Boston a year or two ago. So good.

I carried Klaster years ago and they severed their US distribution for some reason. It was a great beer, with great packaging and it sold very well. Klaster is big in Asia, and I think they went east.

Just for curiosity's sake I thought I would submit this advertisement from 1922 which advertises the "new brew", Flensburger Pilsener, "made from only the best Pilsener malt and finest Saazer hops and brewed to the highest allowed gravity of wort (13%)."

Here are some analyses of 5 Pilsener (Bohemian) beers, 7 North German Pilsner-style beers and 2 south-German pale beers from 1895. It's divided into four categories:
    "Alkohol" (alcohol by weight)
    "Extrakt" (residual extract)
    "Extractgehalt der stammwürze" (original gravity)
    "Vergährungsgrad" (degree of attenuation)

The results are then split further into mittel (average) and schwankungen (range).
