I've been to Germany three times, most recently in '13. I drank plenty of pilsners and none were as hoppy as Prima. The general consensus here has been that it's quite heavily hopped for the style, with some liking it and others not. Would like to hear from others who've traveled/lived in Germany on this.

Guiness is perfectly correct for the style, it's a dry Irish Stout. If you don't prefer the style it's not the beers fault here. Same with Bud , it's not bad, it's correct for that style, whether I / we / us drink it is another story,

The same can be said for some of the newcomer U.S.-brewed Pilsners. They're catering to the "hop craze."

Couldn't agree more. I think most bash Guinness because of the nitro. But as far as the beer itself, I've always found it to be a good example of a dry Irish stout. Sure, I have favorites, but Guinness is at least comparable to those.

I don't know what people expect from a dry Irish stout, it's a fairly straightforward style in my opinion. Now, if you have an issue with nitrogen...that's a different story.

What I expect is what I get from Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout - flavor and some complexity. Guinness lacks that and is mediocre compared to Brooklyn's version. It's also non-nitro.

Agreed. I have been to Germany many times and find Prima Pils to be way more hoppy and bitter that any german pils I have had. Also lacking the malt finesse that I enjoy in the better german ones.

Not alone. I love a good pilsner (and hate a bad one). Victory's Prima Pils is far and away my favorite. I was really fond of the Kellerbier at Hopmonk in Sonoma County, Ca too, though last time I was there it was a little off. Hope they have not changed their production for the worse.

The thing about a pilsner is that the brewer has nowhere to hide - nothing covers up faults and flaws. A badly done pilsner is an affront to the tastebuds. But when they get it right, it is hard to beat.

Guinness Extra is considered a Dry Irish Stout -- plenty of character there with no nitro, and one of my favorites.

True, but I'm only talking about draft dry Irish stouts. The Extra is a different animal and not available on tap, to my knowledge.

You're not alone, but that being said Pilsners are one of my least favourite styles. Funnily enough I prefer something not so crisp and tend to like sippin' beers over drinking beers. That being said on a hot day on the patio a nice pilsner can be quite refreshing, but usually only one before moving on or as a palate cleanser when drinking multiple styles.

I turned my nose up at Pilsners for years, but after ordering a Prima Pils a few months back, I forgot how refreshing a well made Pilsner can be, especially in the summer heat. They are much better with most foods as well compared to IPAs and other styles in my opinion. I try to have atleast a 6 pack of Prima Pils or Pilsner Urquell in the fridge at all times.

Yeah, I'd definitely like to try it on tap sometime. Wonder if it's only bottled? For some reason I never looked for it in Ireland when I visited -- only stuck to available draughts.

I've always loved Kulmbacher EKU Pils for the clarity, big white head and and spicy hop signature. A beer that is a real crowd pleaser!

I will get started, Jacks Abby makes some great imperial pilsners. I love pilsners and it's great to have some local options, as far as the European variety- I don't think they travel well.

    Imperial Pilsners ≠ Pilsners.

I just noticed -- 5 pages and only one mention of Trumer? That's my go-to for a good, fresh, German-style Pils. Sorry to those outside the distribution area because it would be a great epiphany for everyone who's never had a good Pilsner.

Forget JA's DIPLs for a moment - have you tried the "House Lager" yet? I can't get enough of it. In my mind, they've finally turned a corner and shown they can make a traditional-tasting lager (in the area of a pils or helles) that makes me think I'm not standing on US soil when drinking it.

I had a Firestone Walker Pivo Pils can last night for the first time, it was enjoyable. I like beers that I can have 1 or 2 and not really feel an effect on me.

It may have been my palate but I definitely perceived higher bitterness over there. I talked to a few brewers who mentioned their pils being low to mid 40s as well. All in all, I still believe Prima to be pretty similar and not extravagantly over hopped. Hopefully someday I can take a fresh 6 pack to Germany and do some side by sides.

I'll see your pils and raise you a hellesbock as another painfully under rated style. Dat pils malt bruh...
