I am heading to Louisville in a couple weeks for work and was just wondering if there were places that I had to check out. I am going to be pretty close to ATG so I was planning to stop there otherwise I don't really know what else I should look for.

Also I know 3 Floyds says they distribute there but was just curious if its easy to come by (wanted to pick up some Zombie Dust for a friend that hasn't had it).

You won't likely have luck just *finding* ZD on a shelf, but it does occasionally happen. Check Holy Grale for a gastropub, Louisville Beer Store and Sergios for bottle shops

Yeah I figured that would be the case but just wanted to check to see.

Sergios might have ZD bottles, but that's a place you absolutely need to check IPA bottle dates before you lay out your money.

Zombie Dust comes to Louisville most weeks, on Wednesday and Thursday. You'll have to ask for it. Sergio probably has ZD, but its probably old as stated above, and its probably ~$7 per 12oz single, bc that's how Sergio's is.

Old Town is also great and is close to Holy Grale, which is the #1 place you should be going in KY.

Sergios has ZD on draft now in case you wanted to grab a pint. I didn't see it in the cooler though.

I'll be in Louisville in 3 weeks. For a pretty well sought after beer in a heavily visited craft beer bar what do you mean check the dates? I would think a beer like this flies out of the cooler. Or are you one of those people that thinks this beer is done after one week?

Because a place like Sergio gets bottles that don't always sell immediately because he charges a premium beyond what many of the locals are willing to pay because they've had it a number of times already at a more reasonable price. Want a Pliny in Kentucky? You might find one at Sergio's, but it could also be six months old or older.

I see. I'll keep that in mind when I go in there.

I would HIGHLY suggest checking out Crescent Hill Craft House on Frankfort Avenue. It's not too far from downtown and has 40 taps of nothing but KY/Southern IN craft beer as well as fantastic food (think higher class pub fare). Outside that I would make sure to hit up Holy Grale, Against the Grain and Great Flood (not too far from Holy Grale either).

I've never been a fan of Sergios. You can find great beer there but you never know how fresh it is and pricing is definitely on the high end. And, at least in my opinion, something about the place just feels off.

Agree. Just a really odd place. The selection is off the charts, but you are paying a premium for him to be able to keep that inventory. Old IPAs are an issue, as people have already said. Still, it's definitely worth checking out.

As far as Zombie Dust is concerned, I actually saw it on the shelf (technically, on the bar by the tap wall) at Liquor Barn St. Matthews on Monday. Probably sold out by now, but I think it is becoming more and more obtainable in these parts.

No Zombie Dust at St. Matthews Liquor Barn as of yesterday, but they had plenty of Yum Yum, Jinx Proof, and Robert the Bruce 6 packs, and a lot of FFF bombers both at the counter and on the shelves. I've only seen it once in the past few months at another Liquor Barn, so you've kinda gotta run around a little bit.

As usual, though, I'd recommend Louisville Beer Store, Holy Grale, Old Town, and a trip across the river to Keg Liquors, both the Clarksville and New Albany locations.

Sergio's exists to fund Sergio the person's ridiculous beer trips all over the world. its a nice place, but its more novelty than anything.

Im headed to louisville for a wedding and this all will help a lot.
I'm from NJ and I hope to find some stuff while im in KY that I cant get in NJ. I'll most likely be stopping at the closest liquor barn to the hotel. St mathews is the best one though you guys think? I might make a special trip if its better then the rest.

Quick question though, y'all keep saying you can buy pints, to drink, while in bottle shops? Is that how it is, or am i reading that wrong and theyre like growlers? because that sounds like something that would never happen in NJ.

    Cheers!

Nope, you can buy pints in bottle shops (growlers as well). In some of the larger stores, I don't think you can just wander the whole store with your beer, though.

Depends on the store. Louisville Beer Store is a bottle shop where you can also buy pints to drink, but it's more of a bar sized place with a bar-type atmosphere. At Liquor Barn, you can buy pints and walk the store, AND get a growler filled (or I know you can at the Springhurst store, not sure about St. Matthews; they're not owned by the same folks). In a state with some arcane liquor laws, I'm glad this is an option.

St. Matthews Liquor Barn is great, but Springhurst isn't terribly far away if you've got transportation, maybe a 10 minute drive; I know I always hit up both when I'm out. You'd also be down the street from Whole Foods, where you might be able to find some other local stuff and fill in the blanks.
