This would be another great addition to Asheville! Oskar Blues, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, and now Deschutes.

The common theme is the "mountain air lifestyle". They are less concerned with being along I-85/95 and more concerned with finding a "home". If you look at Raleigh (or Charlotte or Greensboro) and then go look at Asheville...its not fair really (at least with companies rooted in the outdoors like Deschutes who sits at the foot of a national forest).

It has been reported Deschutes also looked at Charlotte but that probably means they just had a layover in CLT and had a nice view from the rocking chairs in the concourse.

Raleigh is a great city, but Asheville's culture and geography seem to be a big determining factor for the big influx of big time US brewers. I love Raleigh, but those mountains are alluring!

Brewery reps are back in Asheville today.

I read that the City of Asheville (or Buncombe County) bought property (around 25 acres) just over the county line with hopes of selling to Deschutes on the cheap, along with granting other tax incentives.

EDIT: Here's the article http://www.citizen-times.com/story/...hutes-eyeing-asheville-area-brewery/26302979/... Buncombe County bought around 137 acres from Henderson County with the presumption that some (or all) would be used for Deschutes. Perhaps the 25 acres you talk about came from this or there is some more recent update.

You guys already get distro from all the breweries that don't send their supply to us, i.e. Troeg's, Great Lakes, Duclaw, Alesmith. And all the breweries who have set up shop here still send their stuff your way. Let's consider it a fair trade-off that we can visit the breweries while you still get everything we get plus more.

Not only that, but it also gives us a great excuse to head up the hill and enjoy some good food and good times.

DuClaw? You aren't missing much there. I think they make some of the worst beers I've tried.

Definitely the least impressive of the four I mentioned but I really like Sweet Baby Jesus and would like to at least have a shot at getting some Retribution

Oh man. Sweet Baby Jesus is the single worst beer I've had. Overloaded with artificial flavors, nasty stuff to me! Haha this is why everyone has different tastes. Cheers!

Haha. I've definitely heard lots of other people say they can't stand it. To me, it's like this on an upward climb of intensity: Liquid Bliss<Sweet Baby Jesus<Horny Goat Chocolate PB Porter. If you think SBJ was gross, you'd probably spit out the Horny Goat it's so over the top sweet and artificial.

I personally thought Liquid Bliss was a little better. I guess peanut butter beer isn't my thing though. Thank God there's thousands of other great local beers around!

Article that ran out in Oregon on 7/5.

Nothing definitive yet, but perhaps something on the horizon? "LaLonde and brewery founder and CEO Gary Fish were in North Carolina and Virginia last week, on the hunt for a brewery site. The company has reportedly scouted locations in Greenville, South Carolina, and Charleston, South Carolina, and Asheville, North Carolina. Fish was silent on which location, if any, has the edge."

If you want a peanut butter stout, try belching beavers PB milk stout. It's delish. Blows DuClaw and LB out of the water IMO.

Their new DBO Ockert said this in the Q&A of that article. I for one feel fortunate that this man may be coming east to enlighten us all in what we've been missing.

"A: There is a ubiquitous commonality of craft brewers to have fun with it, to explore new avenues in beer. On the East Coast, they’re a little behind the West Coast. Strangely, they’ve always been a little bit behind. They’re sort of discovering IPAs right now. Oregon is the epicenter of beer innovation, has been (for) quite a while."

    Yeah, fuck off mate.

There was basically no beer scene in NC ten years ago. Things are swell now, but that definitely qualifies as 'behind'

Yeah that definitely comes off as condescending, but I'm not sure he's really wrong. No real need to say it, in any case.
